India donates 1000 metric tonnes of rice and essential medicines to Cameroon
Yaounde [Cameroon], June 24 (ANI): India handed over 1000 metric tonnes of rice and essential medicines to Cameroon. Cameroon's Minister of Territorial Administration, Paul Atanga Nji, and India's High Commissioner to Cameroon, Vijay Khanduja, presided over the ceremony on Monday to hand over rice and essential medicines.
The Indian High Commission in Cameroon noted that this humanitarian gesture aims to support victims of floods that struck Cameroon's far north region in 2024. According to the statement, India, through this humanitarian support, reaffirmed its role as a reliable partner to Cameroon during challenging times and strengthened cooperation among nations of the Global South.
In a post shared on Facebook, the Indian High Commission in Cameroon stated, 'Strengthening Friendship and Solidarity. A Handing-Over Ceremony was held in Yaounde today to officially mark the donation of 1,000 metric tonnes of rice and essential medicines from the Government of the Republic of India to the Government of the Republic of Cameroon. The ceremony was jointly presided over by H.E. Paul Atanga Niji, Minister of Territorial Administration of Cameroon, and H.E. Shri Vijay Khanduja, High Commissioner of India to Cameroon.'
'This humanitarian gesture is aimed at supporting victims of the devastating floods that struck the Far North Region of Cameroon in 2024, reflecting India's solidarity with the people of Cameroon during times of need. Through this humanitarian support, India reaffirms its role as a reliable partner to Cameroon during challenging times and strengthening cooperation among nations of the Global South,' it added.

Earlier in April, India sent a consignment of 1,000 metric tonnes of rice to Cameroon. Ministry of External Affairs official spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said the effort is in the spirit of a committed partnership with the Global South.
In a post on X, Jaiswal stated, 'India: A committed partner to the Global South. India sends food-grain assistance for the people of Cameroon. A consignment of 1000MT Rice departed today from Nhava Sheva Port to Cameroon.'
Notably, India and Cameroon have friendly and cordial relations dating back to the latter's independence in 1960. India opened its resident High Commission in Yaounde in 2019. Earlier, in 2009, a USD 37.65 million Indian Line of Credit (LoC) for Cameroon, funding a project each of Rice and Maize Farm Plantation, was operationalised, and this project was completed in 2017, according to the Indian High Commission in Cameroon's statement.
India has been supporting Cameroon's efforts in Capacity building under the Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation (ITEC) Program since 1964. The Indian government also provides over 180 ITEC slots annually for capacity building in Cameroon. Three slots have been allocated to Cameroon under the Africa Scholarship Scheme of the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR). (ANI)

'Robust business activity is evident from strong e-way bill generation and PMI (Purchasing Managers' Index) data.' Private investment , a key pillar of growth, is returning. 'Of course, they are coming in. With all that (global situation), I think the Indian industry was also being cautious, but now I can see them moving and coming out,' she said, adding that bankers have told her that the private sector is approaching them for credit. States were also doing a good job of at tracting investment. Demand in the country's towns and cities isn't troubling. 'I'm not very concerned about urban consumption, but since I am watching it, I will keep a close eye,' she said. Bankers are optimistic about rate transmission following the central bank's recent 50-basis-point reduction. 'Of course, there will be some time lag as banks need to handle both the lending side and the deposit side,' she said. 'They have a tightrope walk to follow. It's not as if they wouldn't want to transmit the reduction.' Sitharaman said work would continue on improving the ease of doing business and that a lot of work has already been done on GST reforms . 'I hope to finish it soon,' she said. 'That would bring in a lot of difference, not just in terms of lesser rates, but also in terms of compliance,' the finance minister said. Sitharaman said industry has been widely consulted before and after the signing of trade agreements and is well-positioned to benefit from them or compete with imports. On new bank licences, the FM said she understood the RBI's approach. 'The only thing on which, if at all, I would want to say is whatever be the decision of the regulator, give licence, approve or deny licence and say no, it cannot happen. It should happen in a reasonable time,' she said. The ongoing Operation Sindoor doesn't pose a fiscal challenge, she said. Of course, they are (private investment) coming in. With all that (global situation), I think the Indian industry was also being cautious, but now I can see them moving and coming out.

Bengal alleges Odisha detained nearly 100 of its migrants as Bangladeshis
Amid Odisha's crackdown on 'illegal immigrants' in the state since May, fresh discord bubbled up with its neighbouring state after the West Bengal government alleged that nearly 100 migrant workers from the state have been allegedly detained and 'sent to detention centres' on suspicion of being Bangladeshis. According to TMC Rajya Sabha MP and chairman of the state's Migrant Welfare Board Samirul Islam, 'top administrative officials and police officers, under the instructions of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, have reached out to their counterparts in Odisha' regarding the issue. 'But they are not releasing the poor migrant workers,' Samirul Islam said. 'What has happened is unconstitutional'. 'They are Indian citizens and residents of Bengal. They have gone to Odisha for work. But they have been detained and labelled Bangladeshis. They have been sent to the detention centre,' he said. 'We will bring them home'. Targeting the CM Mohan Majhi-led Odisha government, Samirul Islam said, 'In state after state, under BJP rule, this is happening.' The development in Odisha comes after seven persons, including four youths and a couple, from West Bengal, who had been picked up by the Maharashtra Police and pushed into Bangladesh, were brought back last week following the intervention of the TMC government in West Bengal. According to government sources, Bengal administration officials and the police are in touch with their Odisha counterparts and have furnished residential documents of those detained and pressed for their immediate release and return. Contacted regarding the developments, a senior Odisha government official told The Indian Express that verifications are being done as part of a nationwide exercise in view of the recent developments in the neighbourhood.
