Sydney Sweeney Offers an Intimate First Look as Boxing Legend Christy Martin

Hypebeast4 days ago
Summary
Sydney Sweeneyis trading in the glam for gloves in her most transformative role yet — stepping into the shoes and ring of legendary boxerChristy Martinin the upcoming biopicChristy. The film, directed by David Michôd, is already stirring serious awards buzz ahead of itsTIFF 2025world premiere, not just for the intensity of Martin's real-life story, but for Sweeney's full-bodied physical and emotional transformation.
Once dubbed 'The Coal Miner's Daughter,' Martin became one of the first women to gain mainstream recognition in a sport long dominated by men. Her 1996 undercard fight on a Mike Tyson bill became a flashpoint moment for women's boxing, leading to mainstream visibility and a 49-7-3 career record, with 31 knockouts. But her story wasn't confined to the ring. After surviving a brutal assassination attempt by her abusive husband and former trainer Jim Martin — who was later sentenced to 25 years in prison — Christy became a vocal advocate for domestic violence survivors and founded Christy's Champs, a nonprofit supporting victims.
The film doesn't shy away from the weight of her story. It dives deep into the highs and lows: from magazine covers and championship belts to addiction battles, closeted identity, and near-death recovery. At its core, Christy is about power — lost, reclaimed, and redefined.
Sweeney reportedly trained for months to inhabit Martin's frame, building muscle and reshaping her body to match the boxer's strength and grit.
She shared viaWMagazine,
'I didn't fit in any of my clothes. I'm usually a size 23 in jeans, and I was wearing a size 27. My boobs got bigger. And my butt got huge. It was crazy! I was like, Oh my god.' Sweeney laughed. 'But it was amazing: I was so strong, like crazy strong.'
The script, penned by Michôd and Mirrah Foulkes, is said to balance raw personal trauma with sports-world spectacle — anchoring the narrative in Martin's unwavering will to survive. With Martin herself involved in the filmmaking process and Sweeney co-producing through her Fifty-Fifty Films banner,Christyis shaping up to be both a portrait of a fighter and a gut-punch of a biopic. The film is set to premiere in September 2025 at the Toronto International Film Festival, with a global release date still yet to be announced.

Sydney Sweeney just sent this American stock soaring

A US clothing brand has seen its share price surge in a 'memestock' frenzy after announcing an advertising campaign featuring actress Sydney Sweeney. Clothing brand American Eagle Outfitters saw its stock jump as much as 12pc in New York after it announced that the Euphoria and The White Lotus actress would star in a new advertising push. The surge added nearly $228m (£168m) to its market value. Ms Sweeney will appear in a campaign for its winter denim collection that includes a limited-edition jacket as well as 'The Sydney Jean'. While advertising campaigns can and do influence a company's performance and Ms Sweeney is one of the most recognisable actresses in the US, analysts said the scale of the share price jump was untethered from reality. The sharp upswing comes after the retailer gained attention on Reddit's WallStreetBets, a forum known for fuelling so-called extreme rallies in the share prices of so-called memestocks. Memestocks are companies where the share price is driven by social media hype and online communities, rather than the company's fundamental financial performance. The phenomenon emerged during the pandemic as people turned to trading as a way to entertain themselves during lockdowns. 'Gamblification' of stock markets The term memestock was coined after companies including GameStop and Blackberry saw their share prices surge in 2021 despite little in the way of updates about their underlying performance. The vertiginous rally triggered the collapse of a hedge fund that had bet against GameStop's stock and helped inspire the 2023 film Dumb Money starring Paul Dano. American Eagle's stock was down almost 50pc so far this year prior to this week's rally after it pulled its annual forecasts because of tariff uncertainty. The company primarily sources its products from China. Ross Mayfield, an analyst at Baird Private Wealth Management, said memestocks were a symbol of how stock markets had been 'gamblified'. He said: 'It says to me nothing about the level of interest rates or financial conditions. This is retail traders moving individual stocks that are heavily shorted. 'It reflects more the gambling culture permeating financial markets. These are not being bid up because of a good earnings report. It's because of a Sydney Sweeney ad campaign.' Ms Sweeney, who has 25.2m followers on Instagram, has fronted campaigns for the likes of Ford, Baskin-Robbins ice cream and luxury fashion brand Miu Miu. As well as being known for her screen roles, Ms Sweeney has become a prominent figure in popular culture and found herself wrapped up in North American culture wars. After her appearance hosting Saturday Night Live, in which she appeared in a sketch as a Hooters waitress, Canadian newspaper the National Post that declared the actress's breasts were the 'double-D harbingers of the death of woke', a claim that sparked a wave of commentary on both sides of the political spectrum centring on her physical appearance. Meanwhile, Ms Sweeney was criticised by commentators on the Left in 2023 after she attended a birthday party for her mother where guests were pictured wearing Maga-style caps. Sydney Sweeney is a meme stock icon now

An American Eagle ad campaign featuring Sydney Sweeney has sent the apparel company's stock soaring. Retail traders on Wall Street Bets piled in, with the stock rising as much as 12%. American Eagle joins the ranks of other meme stocks that spiked this week, like Opendoor and Krispy Kreme. Roaring Kitty. Ryan Cohen. Sydney Sweeney? It may not seem like the famous actor has much in common with the most famous retail trader folk heroes, but Sweeney on Thursday was the unlikely catalyst of a sudden stock surge. An American Eagle ad featuring the actor went viral on the internet on Wednesday, attracting the attention of not only the clothing retailer's fans but also the Wall Street Bets crowd, sending shares of the company surging. The campaign, titled "Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans," is tailored toward drawing in the brand's Gen Z customer base. The company's stock spiked as much as 12% on Thursday. "$AEO Who doesn't like Sydney Sweeney. That's my DD," one Reddit user said, sharing a captioned screenshot showing a position of 20,000 shares in American Eagle opened on Thursday. American Eagle shares some characteristics with its meme stock brethren: its short interest level is elevated at around 12% of the total float. That makes the stock a promising target for retail investors looking for a short squeeze. That puts it among the DORKs—Krispy Kreme, Opendoor, Rocket Lab, and Kohl's—which all rallied this week. And like Opendoor and the others, American Eagle's business has been challenged. The new ad campaign featuring Sweeney is part of the apparel company's move to revitalize the brand amid stiff competition and caution from consumers due to lingering economic uncertainty. The company's most recent earnings report showed a 5% drop in revenue, and American Eagle has pulled forward guidance. Despite the recent rally, the stock is still down 32% year-to-date. But at the end of the day, the rise of particular meme stocks might not have much rhyme or reason. For the retail traders piling in, the investment thesis is simple: they think Sweeney is hot. "I'm going in too, it's a meme world now. 🌎🔥," another Redditor commented. Read the original article on Business Insider Sign in to access your portfolio

Beyond The Gates Recap: Nicole Learns Bill Orchestrated Kenneth's Murder

Beyond The Gates Recap: Nicole Learns Bill Orchestrated Kenneth's Murder originally appeared on Daytime Confidential. On today's Beyond The Gates recap: Anita and Vernon's Mansion: Anita is practicing her choreography when Vernon walks in and fawns over her. Just then, Martin walks in and says he's headed to his mother's house. He says he's coming clean to her about what happened to Kenneth. Smitty has told him the only way they are getting back together is if he comes clean to family about everything. Nicole's Pad: Nicole is on the phone with the head of the hospital. She says she is ready to come back to work. Nicole thinks the storm has passed with her family and she shouldn't have to deal with anymore surprises. Martin arrives and notices his mother's smile. She says she's moving forward and going back to work. Martin hates the thought that he might be about to set her back. He promises it's the last detail he left out. They take a seat, and Martin tells his mother about Kenneth and how Bill, Malone, Joey and Elon took care of him. She is stunned to hear about Elon as she thinks he's of high moral character. Nicole asks if her dad knew and Martin says they were both in the dark (Oh Martin, what you don't know…). Nicole says she doesn't understand why folks won't tell her things as she isn't a delicate flower. No one is going to love and protect him more than she will. Martin understands but says he didn't want to lose the dream of being President and knew she would make him face the truth. Nicole realizes she's at fault for not asking questions as she should've known something was going on both with him and Ted. She thinks they should work some of these issues out under the guise of client-patient privilege (um, no). They agree and Nicole says she needs to go take care of something. Orphey Gene's: Jacob arrives and takes a seat with Naomi. He tells her about Leslie pressing charges Nicole with Ted as the only witness. She thinks it was smart for him to decline a statement. Naomi hopes and prays her husband didn't put cuffs on another member of her family. Jacob says he took the evidence he had to the DA who said it wasn't enough for an arrest. He says he tries to ignore the Dupree missteps but wonders what Vernon would do. Naomi says her grandfather would protect his own no matter what. Martin arrives and Jacob walks up to chat. He says he heard about him and Smitty and is rooting for them to get back together. He probes a bit why Martin stepped away from the family and says he wants to help with the man who was stalking them. Martin shades the truth saying, as far as he knows, the man hasn't made contact with anyone recently. Martin appreciates Jacob's offer but says he and Smitty will work it out. Jacob continues bringing up Kenneth's death in the park and how it can't be a coincidence it happened around his press conference. Martin goes into politician mode and says he and his constituents are always concerned about a rise in crime in the area. He's glad Marcel is on the case as he's certain he will find the culprit. With that, he gets up to grab takeout and leave. Hotel – Eva's Room: Eva and Tomas arrive back as she looks for the book to give him. He gets tickled when she acts all kinds of shy. Tomas isn't concerned about the book. He just wants to hang with her. Eva says she's a wee bit freaked out and doesn't know what happens next. Tomas says they could simply talk about books or continue what they started at Orphey Gene's. With that, they kiss and hit the sheets. As they get hot and heavy, Eva stops because of Kat as it's what she's been accusing her of this very thing. Tomas says he and Kat aren't exclusive. She wonders if Kat has the same understanding. Eva says she wants to be the main character rather than the side piece. She finally has the chance to be the heroine of the story. Just then, Kat bangs on the door saying they need to talk. Eva pushes Tomas to head to the bathroom but her refuses. Eva answers the door and Kat rushes in. She is stopped dead in her tracks when she sees Tomas, who says he's just there to pick up a book. Kat has no time and exits. Tomas is annoyed he didn't hide in the bathroom. Eva is more than irritated that Tomas still hid by lying to Kat about why he is there. She finds the book and tries to push Tomas out. He apologizes and hopes Eva will continue to allow him in her life. With that, he exits and Eva says 'the end.' Bill and Hayley's Place: Bill notices his wife's new dress and says she looks wonderful and would never know she was pregnant. They chat a bit about their upcoming child and he says he put another deposit in the college fund that covers everything for undergraduate education. Hayley thinks they are all lucky to be Hamiltons. Hayley asks where he stands with the Dupree. Bill says they only call him if they need something. She was hoping their grip on him would loosen and is disturbed that he can't quit them. Bill says that is no longer the case. Nicole arrives, storms into the living room and calls Bill a murderer. Hayley sees the resemblance between Nicole and Dani and tells her to get out. Bill intervenes and asks his wife to give them a moment. Bill chastises Nicole as Hayley knows nothing of the Martin situation. Nicole thinks Hayley deserves to know who her baby daddy is as she should have known Ted was someone else's baby daddy. Bill tries to avoid giving up any details of his own actions, but Nicole is done. She says she knows the whole story and is DONE listening to his foolishness. Bill pushes back saying she is clearly joining the Dupree hypocrites and sitting up on high whilst he does the family's dirty work. He asks how Martin would have fared if he had to go through a trial for killing a racist. Bill says, no matter the means, he's the one who saved Martin, not her. Anita and Vernon's Mansion: Naomi arrives and tells them about the new case that landed on Jacob's desk which makes it seem like Martin is guilty of something. She can't imagine how Martin is in trouble and they don't know anything about it. She then realizes she might be the only one out of the loop. They're silence speaks volumes and she realizes they can't say because she's married to a police officer. Anita and Vernon don't want her to have to carry the burden of the truth but Naomi wants to know everything. Vernon hands her a dollar and retains her as their attorney which begins privilege. With that, Vernon tells her the story of two years prior. They continue by telling her about Kenneth dying at the hands of Malone. Vernon says Elon played his part in both the investigation around Martin and Kenneth. Anita says Elon is a good man as they all thought they were doing the right thing by protecting Martin. Naomi can't believe what she's hearing. Anita goes on to tell Naomi that Martin and Vernon wanted to pay Kenneth off, but Bill and Joey had other plans. Naomi can't believe Bill instigated murder. Vernon says he is also at fault for going to Bill but thought there were lines 'the fixer' wouldn't cross. Previous Beyond The Gates Recap: Endings Kat walks in and vents about Eva and Tomas to Martin. She says Tomas is a liar and a cheater like all men. Martin tries to get his sister to pump the brakes, and she takes a breath. Nicole wishes the Dupree family never came in contact with the likes of Bill. He says the almighty Vernon is to blame. Bill can't imagine the patriarch of an upstanding family needing a cleanup man. Nicole thinks he is a piece of work. Bill continues saying he was once a Dupree believer. He says he is just as disappointed in the Duprees as she is right now. Nicole does a slow clap and tells Bill to stay away from her entire family. She says SHE is the fixer now! Naomi tells the grands she thought her father had changed. She let him back in but thought the worst of the secrets and lies had passed. Killing someone was something she thought her father wasn't capable of. Naomi moves on reminding her grandparents of Jacob's investigation into Martin and now dead Kenneth. Anita asks how much he knows. Naomi says Jacob is putting the pieces together quickly. She says they need to prepare for the possibility their dirty laundry may be aired quite quickly.
