A Welsh retiree is celebrating after winning a £51,000 Range Rover Sport SVR in an online competition - but doesn't have space to keep it. Neil Abernethy, a former BT engineer from Wrexham, was stunned when online competition specialist BOTB turned up at his home with the news he was the latest winner.
He had completely forgotten he had entered the competition for the luxury vehicle - and had only staked 5p.
Relaxing in the garden, the 70-year-old was approached by BOTB presenter Katie Knight, who led him to the powerful SUV parked nearby.
'I'm just about getting over the shock,' Neil said. 'When I saw it was BOTB I'd completely forgotten what I had entered – it was a huge, but lovely surprise. This is the best 5p I've ever spent! It's a beautiful car.'
A long-time BOTB player, Neil said he had entered the competitions as a bit of a hobby and never realistically thought he would win.
His partner was in on the secret and helped BOTB coordinate the big reveal.
'She kept a good secret,' Neil said.
Although he was thrilled with the car after never owning or even sitting in a Range Rover, he revealed he's planning to take the cash alternative.
'I would have loved to take the car, but we've currently got nowhere to keep it,' he added.
'We've been looking for a new house for ages. We might also use some of it towards a holiday to Barbados.'
To celebrate, Neil said he'll be opening a bottle of Champagne and heading out for a nice meal.
Katie said: 'Neil was genuinely stunned – he was completely caught off guard and his reaction was priceless. Having played for years, he's a truly deserving winner.
'It's such an incredible prize – the Range Rover Sport SVR is an awesome car, packed with power, performance and luxury. Whether he takes the car or the cash, he now has an exciting decision to make.' Michael Douglas ‘no real intentions' of going back to acting

The 80-year old actor and producer was speaking during a press conference at Karlovy Vary International Film Festival in the Czech Republic for the 50th anniversary of One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest, which he co-produced. Douglas most recently starred as Benjamin Franklin in the Apple TV+ series Franklin in 2022 and said that unless something 'special' came along, it was time for him 'to stop'. The actor, who is married to Welsh actress Catherine Zeta Jones, also spoke about how 'lucky' he was to have made a recovery from stage four cancer after undergoing chemotherapy and radiation treatment and avoiding surgery that would have impacted his speech and removed parts of his jaw. He said: 'I've had a very busy career. I have not worked since 2022, purposefully, because I realised I had to stop. I had been working pretty hard for almost 60 years, and I did not want to be one of those people who dropped dead on the set. 'I'm very happy with taking the time off. I have no real intentions of going back. 'I say I'm not retired, because if something special came up, I'd go back, but otherwise, I'm quite happy. Just like to watch my wife work.' Douglas co-produced the film adaptation to Ken Kesey's novel, which explores themes of power and resistance as a rebellious convict arrives at a psychiatric hospital in 1963 where he encourages his fellow patients to take control of their lives and defy the tyrannical head nurse. Starring Jack Nicholson and Louise Fletcher, the film was nominated for nine Oscars and took home five including the 1975 award for best picture. When asked about the parallels between the film and current political environment in the US, Douglas said: 'I think our president's name has been mentioned enough in the short time that he's been president. 'And I look at it generally as the fact of how precious, how precious democracy is, how vulnerable it is, and how it always has to be protected, and we have to be reminded. 'Right now, our country is flirting with autocracy as some other democracies in this world. 'Democracy is not to be taken for granted, and I think it reminds us that we all need to make our efforts. It's not the job of somebody else. 'And of course, the disappointing thing is, politics now seem to be for profit. 'I myself am worried, I'm nervous, and I just think it's all of our responsibilities, not for somebody else to look out for us, but for us to each look out for ourselves.'

Steve Coogan spared driving ban after using The Trip filming as excuse

Coogan was travelling on the M6 in a Range Rover near Telford, Shropshire, on July 29 last year when he was caught going over the 70mph speed limit, a court official said. In a letter to Birmingham Magistrates' Court, reported by the Evening Standard, he urged the court not to disqualify him as he had already accrued six points on his licence. The newspaper said the Alan Partridge actor told the court he was expected to film The Trip, which the 59-year-old appears in with co-star Rob Brydon, and a lengthy driving ban would mean 'the production would likely be unable to proceed'. Coogan's request for five penalty points to be imposed instead of six was granted after he pleaded guilty to the offence on January 30. He was ordered to pay a £2,500 fine, plus £90 costs and a £1,000 victim surcharge. The Evening Standard said his letter to the court read: 'I have a series of important film commitments scheduled for 2025, many of which involve driving as a central component of the work. 'I am due to appear in a well-established TV series called The Trip which as the title suggests requires me to drive. 'This starts filming towards the end of June 2025 and if I were unable to drive, the production would likely be unable to proceed.' Coogan previously successfully argued for a shorter driving ban at Crawley Magistrates' Court in August 2019 after being caught doing 36mph in a 30mph zone – saying an extended disqualification would mean he could not film the new series of Alan Partridge. He was also banned from driving for 28 days at Worthing Magistrates' Court in 2016 for travelling at 54mph in a 30mph zone in a Mazda sports car.

State banquet – including special cocktail – in spirit of Entente Cordiale

French champagne and a special gin-infused cocktail called L'entente will be served at the state banquet in honour of president of France. The King has also turned to his friend and King's Foundation ambassador, French chef Raymond Blanc, to put together the menu in culinary collaboration with the Royal Household, designing the first course and the dessert. Blanc was in the kitchens at Windsor on Tuesday evening making sure the dishes were served to perfection for President Emmanuel Macron, his wife Brigitte and the 160 guests including Charles, the Queen and the Prince and Princess of Wales. The menu, which was written in French as is the custom for state banquets, begins with a selection of tender summer vegetables from the Gardens of Le Manoir with Sage, Raw Tomato and Extra Virgin Olive Oil Dressing. The next course is Supreme of Rhug Estate Chicken with Norfolk Asparagus and Tarragon Cream, followed by Iced Blackcurrant Parfait on a Blackcurrant-soaked Sponge with Elderflower Jelly for dessert. Buckingham Palace described the collaboration as being 'in the spirit of the Entente Cordial'. In a tradition started by the King, a cocktail has also been created specially for the occasion, this time called L'entente. It combines British gin with lemon curd and French pastis, garnished with dried French cornflowers and English roses. The wine list was Domaine Evremond, Classic Cuvee, Edition I, NV; Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru, Etienne Sauzet, 2022; Chateau Haut-Brion; 1er Grand Cru Classe Pessac-Leognan, 1996; Louis Roederer, Carte Blanche, NV. The English sparkling wine will be used for the toast. After dinner, guests will be served Taylor's 1977 Vintage Port and a 1948 Grande Champagne Cognac by Frapin & Co, selected to reflect the years of the President's and the King's births in 1977 and 1948. Delicate seasonal flowers including roses, sweet peas and herbs in a colour scheme of pale pinks, purples and white decorated the table, handpicked from the gardens at Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle, along with flowers and lavender from The Savill Garden in Windsor Great Park, all arranged in silver-gilt centrepieces taken from the Grand Service. The impressive St George's Hall is the largest room in the castle at 55.5 metres long (180ft) and nine metres wide (29.5ft), and the 50 metre (164ft) table stretches its full length. The castle's staff began constructing the mahogany table last Wednesday, and it now set with the elaborate silver gilt Grand Service. The hall's gothic style ceiling with impressive oak beam roof is studded with the coats of arms of every single Knight of the Garter since the order was founded in 1348. Its walls and ceiling were decimated in the Windsor Castle fire of 1992 and had to be painstakingly rebuilt. Following the state banquet, the King and Queen and the Macrons and guests will move to the Music Room for a performance by the BBC National Orchestra of Wales.
