Oprah Winfrey has come under fire again, despite refuting a viral social-media rumor that she kept a private road closed during tsunami evacuation efforts in Hawaii.
What began as a logistic concern has since evolved into a broader discussion about non-Indigenous billionaire land ownership on the islands.
On Wednesday morning, a powerful 8.8-magnitude earthquake struck off Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula, triggering tsunami warnings across the Pacific. The alerts prompted evacuation efforts from Russia to Hawaii.
Winfrey, who has lived part-time on Maui for over 15 years, owns more than 2,000 acres on the island, including a farm on the slopes of dormant volcano Haleakalā and a private road—now at the center of the controversy.
In a statement to Newsweek on Wednesday, a spokesperson said: "As soon as we heard the tsunami warnings, we contacted local law enforcement and FEMA to ensure the road was opened. Any reports otherwise are false."

A spokesperson has since provided further background regarding the road, which belongs to Haleakalā Ranch.
"While she has the right to improve and use the road, it's an easement, but it is owned by Haleakalā Ranch. Opening the road ultimately falls to the landowner (Haleakalā Ranch), which they were quick to do when the warning was issued to evacuate, working with local officials and Oprah's Ranch," the spokesperson said.
Still, online discussion has shifted from the specifics of emergency access to the ethics of land ownership itself—particularly by non-Indigenous billionaires.
The controversy echoes sentiments raised during the devastating August 2023 wildfires, when Winfrey and Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson launched the People's Fund of Maui. Critics at the time questioned why two wealthy celebrities were soliciting donations from the public instead of contributing more from their personal fortunes.
Her spokesperson said: "Ms. Winfrey personally donated over $25 million in wildfire related efforts, in addition to creating a path for others to support the wildfire relief efforts through the People's Fund of Maui.
"Through that fund, nearly $60 million was distributed to over 8,100 residents as direct cash relief to serve as a bridge to support for those impacted," the spokesperson added.
This time, the discourse centers on colonization and land rights.
"I feel like criticism of Oprah should be more than access to a road and should also focus on why she or anyone not Indigenous to Hawaii would have a road," posted @abolitionistdoc, whose Threads post garnered over 27,500 views.
In response to another user who said, "She bought the land and built a road. Not that complicated," @abolitionistdoc replied: "It's not complicated but you may be missing the point: Colonization."
Another user, @allisonmizer, posted: "Just a reminder, Oprah is a billionaire and much like all billionaires our society worships, she does. Not. Care. About. You. (Or me.) PERIOD," with the message amassing over 159,000 views.
Others stepped in to defend Winfrey.
"Oprah is a good person. She's always had a good heart. No rich person has or will ever do anything for me or my family. I'm not expecting that, but I do admire her for her generosity," said Cody Keene.
"I know Oprah opened up her road to help evacuation efforts, but also, like, why do billionaires need private roads?" asked Carly Civello, whose post received over 275,000 views.
"She can have a private road on her own property. She also has security. Why is this an issue for anyone?" added Carolyn Anthony.
The situation has reignited complex questions surrounding land ownership in Hawaii.
Deepak Sarma, a professor in the Department of Religious Studies at Case Western Reserve University, told Newsweek that the issue highlights long-standing tensions in American history stemming from colonialism.
"The issue of land ownership in Hawaii exemplifies so many different issues that have plagued America since its inception by colonial settlers," Sarma said.
Hawaii's annexation and the 1993 Apology Resolution acknowledged the harm caused by colonization, continue to raise questions about who has rightful claims to the land.
Sarma also drew comparisons to Indigenous land rights in the continental United States and U.S. territories such as Puerto Rico, where the legacies of colonization remain unresolved.
Sarma questioned whether public figures should own land vital to local communities—either in emergencies or simply for public enjoyment—and cited Vinod Khosla's controversial blocking of public access to Martins Beach in California as another example.
When landowners are among the wealthiest people in the world, Sarma added, the optics become even more complicated—especially in cases like Oprah Winfrey's, where a celebrated advocate for marginalized voices now faces scrutiny herself.
"Does she seem like a hypocrite? Or does celebrating her now seem somewhat counterintuitive for the throngs of her supporters?" Sarma asked.
The broader debate around Indigenous rights is not new. The wildfires that destroyed Lahaina in 2023 left many working-class families homeless, while developers rushed in to snap up properties—often at the expense of Native Hawaiian communities, who were disproportionately affected.

Who Is Luiza Rozova? Putin's Alleged Love Child Breaks Silence

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Elizaveta Krivonogikh, also known as Luiza Rozova, has gone public with sharp criticism of Russian President Vladimir Putin—her alleged father—more than a year after vanishing from social media. Now living in Paris under a new name, she's distancing herself from the Kremlin and the luxury lifestyle she once displayed online. In a series of Telegram posts obtained by the German newspaper Bild, Krivonogikh wrote about a man "who took millions of lives and destroyed mine." The 22-year-old did not name Putin directly, but the reference was widely interpreted as her first public break with the Russian leader. "It's liberating to be able to show my face to the world again," she added. "It reminds me of who I am and who destroyed my life." A New Life in Paris Born in St. Petersburg in 2003, Krivonogikh has been long rumored to be the daughter of Putin and former cleaner Svetlana Krivonogikh. After Luiza's birth, her mother's financial fortunes rose sharply. While there has never been official confirmation of Putin's paternity, Krivonogikh's patronymic—Vladimirovna—and past investigative reports have fueled speculation for years. On right, Elizaveta Krivonogikh. More Getty Images / Telegram She once posted regularly on Instagram, sharing photos of private jets, elite nightclubs and designer fashion. But her account disappeared around the time Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022. Now, according to multiple reports, she goes by Elizaveta Rudnova and works at two Paris art galleries—L Galerie in Belleville and Espace Albatros in Montreuil—both known for hosting anti-war exhibitions. She graduated from the ICART School of Cultural and Art Management in 2024 and helps organize shows and produce video content. Caught Between Politics Krivonogikh's new life has not been without controversy. Russian artist Nastya Rodionova, who fled Russia after the invasion of Ukraine, ended her collaboration with both galleries after learning of Krivonogikh's involvement. "It is inadmissible to allow a person who comes from a family of beneficiaries of the regime to come into confrontation with the victims of that regime," Rodionova said in a public statement. Krivonogikh defended herself, asking, "Am I really responsible for the activities of my family, who can't even hear me?" Some in the Paris art community have supported her. Dmitry Dolinsky, who runs the association that oversees both galleries, told Bild: "She looks like Putin, but so do 100,000 other people. I haven't seen a DNA test." Others described her as cultured and committed to her work. Her mother was sanctioned by the United Kingdom in 2023 over her ties to Putin's inner circle. Krivonogikh has since traded designer labels for activism, signaling a full break from the image she once embraced. "My life is ruined," she wrote recently, referencing the man she holds responsible for both personal and national destruction. She now appears focused on rebuilding her identity—and making it clear that she wants no part of the legacy she inherited.

Becky Lynch Upset With Seth Rollins' Controversial WWE Decision

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The new World Heavyweight Champion, Seth Rollins, has revealed the intricate details behind what he is calling the "Ruse of the Century." On Monday, Rollins confirmed that his recent, career-threatening knee injury was a complete fabrication, a three-week deception designed to facilitate his shocking Money in the Bank cash-in at SummerSlam. Rollins appeared on The Rich Eisen Show to gloat about his masterful plan. His appearance came less than 48 hours after he cashed in on CM Punk to win the World Heavyweight Championship at the conclusion of SummerSlam Night One. Seth Rollins Executing The "Ruse of the Century" Rollins explained the elaborate lengths he went to in order to sell the fake injury. He revealed that even his wife, fellow WWE superstar Becky Lynch, was an "unwilling participant" in the scheme. "She was very upset at me for making me lie to all of her friends and family for the better part of three weeks," Rollins said (H/T to Fightful). "I said, 'Honey, just trust me, the payoff will be great.'" He also shared a humorous story about his young daughter, Roux, almost blowing his cover. "First thing she did was go and tell her preschool teacher, Ms. Joy, immediately," he laughed. "Thank you, Roux, thank you, Ms. Joy." He noted that the three weeks of limping around on crutches was "excruciating," but worth it for the "greater good." NEW YORK, NEW YORK - SEPTEMBER 28: Becky Lynch and Seth Rollins attend the 2019 Global Citizen Festival: Power The Movement in Central Park on September 28, 2019 in New York Global Citizen A Masterclass In Deception By Seth Rollins Rollins' plan is a modern example of a "worked shoot" injury, a classic wrestling angle designed to blur the lines between reality and storyline. The ruse began at the Saturday Night's Main Event premium live event on July 12, where he faked the knee injury during a match with LA Knight, leading to an unplanned loss. In the weeks that followed, reports confirmed the "legitimacy" of the injury, and he was even seen on crutches in a video posted by his wife. The entire wrestling world was convinced he would be out for months. This masterful deception is reminiscent of Mark Henry's famous fake retirement speech in 2013, and it has cemented Rollins' reputation as a cunning strategist. More news: WWE Superstar Announces Retirement Match The Heist Part II The shocking cash-in at SummerSlam is also a direct callback to the most iconic moment of Rollins' career. At WrestleMania 31 in 2015, he created the "Heist of the Century" when he cashed in his first Money in the Bank contract during the main event. This "Ruse of the Century" is the perfect spiritual successor, further cementing his legacy as the greatest Money in the Bank holder of all time. The target of the ruse, CM Punk, makes the moment even more significant. The deep, personal animosity between Rollins and Punk is well-documented, and this elaborate, three-week deception was the ultimate way for Rollins to deny his nemesis his fairytale championship moment. Dog With Severe Arthritis Cannot Play Fetch, But Unexpected Friend Steps In

Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Seeing his doggy brother with severe arthritis cannot play fetch by himself, a cat jumped in to lend a helping paw, melting viewers' hearts. The 6-year-old Australian cattle dog, Blue, was first diagnosed with arthritis when he was nearing 3 years old. About one in five dogs suffers from canine arthritis, making everyday activities painful and commonly affecting the legs, hips and back, according to the American Kennel Club. "He's slowly been declining and is not able to enjoy the things he used to as much," Blue's owner told Newsweek. His owner, who manages the TikTok account @ continues to give Blue the best quality of life possible. He receives supplements during flare-ups and wears a special brace on his leg, and goes to laser therapy about once a month. But it was bringing home a foster cat that helped make the most of Blue's days. A July 30 TikTok video shows the tuxedo cat, Mr. Darcy, assisting in a game of fetch. Blue sat by the ball, ready for the game that helped him still feel like a normal dog. His owner threw it across the kitchen and into the other room. Screenshots from a July 30 TikTok video of a tuxedo cat assisting a dog with severe arthritis during a game of fetch. He looked back at his owner to give the green light, tagging Blue to come back in. It was Blue's time to shine. He walked over to retrieve the ball, and the two pets returned together for the next round. The text on the video reads: "Teamwork makes the dream work." Seeing the cat coming to Blue's rescue brought the owner to tears, especially since Mr. Darcy only came to live with them as a foster cat. But once she saw how these two bonded, there was no way she could let Mr. Darcy go. A separate video explained that this cat quickly became a "foster fail." She adopted him, and the two pets have bonded even more. Viewer Reactions With over 605,800 views and 169,400 likes on TikTok as of Monday, people instantly fell head over heels for these furry besties. "That's so cute. What a dynamic duo!" a viewer commented. "Animals are so smart, they have so much empathy for each other," a TikTok user said. "Awe, he is lucky to have a brother like that. And mom, you are awesome to stimulate him like that," another commenter wrote. Do you have funny and adorable videos or pictures of your pet you want to share?
