Anne Burrell's cause of death revealed

Express Tribune4 days ago
More than five weeks after Anne Burrell was found dead in her Brooklyn home, the New York City medical examiner has revealed her official cause of death. The beloved Food Network chef and TV personality died by suicide, according to a newly released toxicology report. Her death had been under investigation since June 17, when she was found unresponsive at around 7:50 a.m. and pronounced dead at the scene.
The report cites 'acute intoxication due to the combined effects of diphenhydramine, ethanol, cetirizine, and amphetamine.' Diphenhydramine and cetirizine are antihistamines, ethanol is found in alcohol, and amphetamines are typically prescribed for ADHD. The combination proved fatal.
The 55-year-old chef had appeared cheerful and energetic in a final Instagram post just five days before her passing, leading fans to believe everything was normal. But her absence from the latest season of Worst Cooks in America, which she had hosted from 2010 to 2024, had already raised questions among her long-time followers. Neither the network nor Burrell ever addressed the change.
Burrell's family released a heartfelt statement following her death, calling her a 'beloved wife, sister, daughter, stepmother, and friend.' They remembered her for a light that 'radiated far beyond those she knew' and added that her 'warmth, spirit, and boundless love remain eternal.'
The Food Network also expressed its grief, saying Burrell was 'a remarkable person and culinary talent,' who shared the importance of food with joy and passion.
Her death has reignited discussions around mental health in high-pressure industries, especially within the food world where personal struggles are often masked behind smiles.

Widely admired for her culinary creativity and unflinching honesty about living with cancer, Zahra leaves behind a powerful legacy of advocacy, entrepreneurship and community-building. Zahra had been publicly sharing her journey with cancer on Instagram since 2022. After a period of healing, in 2024, Zahra's cancer returned and metastasized to critical areas, including her spine and supraclavicular (neck) lymph nodes, marking a significant progression to Stage IV triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) - one of the most aggressive and challenging forms of the disease. News of her being on a ventilator had circulated throughout the week, until her family confirmed that she had passed away Despite her struggles, Zahra chose to publicly document her experience, including chemotherapy, a double mastectomy, radiation, and the emotional and physical toll, offering an unprecedented look into life with terminal illness. Through her candid social media presence, she became a voice of hope and vulnerability in South Asia, using Instagram reels, long-form captions, and honest storytelling to shed light on women's health, early detection, and the social stigma around cancer. Her courage resonated deeply with young women, caregivers, survivors, and even healthcare professionals across the region. In addition to her advocacy work, Zahra continued to grow her home-based cheesecake business during her treatment. If You Like Cheese became known not just for its signature desserts, but for its message of perseverance, creativity, and heart. Her kitchen became both a business and a sanctuary, a space where she continued to create and inspire. Friends, followers, and members of the food and wellness community shared tributes celebrating her honesty, strength, and entrepreneurial spirit. I would like to elaborate on who she was and what she meant to my friends and I. Not sure it's possible to articulate it well. But there will forever be a Zahra Khan shaped hole in our circle.' She went on to say, 'Seventeen years is a long time to know someone, but it is a brutally short amount of time when you realize that's all the time you're going to get. That the person you grew up with won't be growing alongside you anymore. Zahra was always a star and now she shines in every moment, every laugh, and every moment she was a part of.' She ended off with, 'I love you Zahra and I will always regret not spearheading the last plan. We miss you.' Followers have flooded her post with prayers, broken hearts and memories, celebrating her unwavering strength. One user wrote, 'Inna lillahi wah Inna elaihi rajeoon. So deeply saddened by the loss of an incredible human being with the fortitude to bear such immense illness and fight till her last breath. May you be blessed with ease and Jannah.' Zahra is survived by loved ones and a growing community that remains forever shaped by her story.

What happened to Ben Askren? Former UFC fighter shares his near-death experience from ventilator, find out full story

Ben Askren opens up about near-death pneumonia battle while on ventilator Former UFC fighter Ben Askren shared the harrowing experience of being placed on a ventilator after developing pneumonia from a bacterial infection, before receiving a double lung transplant. The 40-year-old, who retired from MMA in 2019, was hospitalised in Wisconsin in late May and has lost 50lb (22.7kg) over the span of 45 days. In an Instagram video posted from his hospital bed, Askren revealed that he has no memory of the period between May 28 and July 2 due to the severity of his illness. He recounted reading through his wife's journal, which described his near-death experience. 'I died four times, the ticker stopped for about 20 seconds,' he said. Askren competed in the UFC's welterweight division. He revealed he currently weighed 147lb, joking that he hadn't been that light since his teenage years. Despite the grim circumstances, Askren expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support from fans and the wrestling community, saying it felt as though he had 'his own funeral' while still alive. His wife, Amy, noted on social media that her husband had been in perfect health just five weeks prior to his sudden illness. The couple has three children. Jake Paul, who defeated Askren in a 2021 boxing match, also made a public plea for donations to assist with Askren's recovery. Askren is widely regarded as one of the best American wrestlers of his generation, competing at the 2008 Summer Olympics, and was a welterweight champion in both Bellator and One Championship.
