Michael Madsen Applauded Quentin Tarantino for Firing Lawrence Tierney
The famed director took center stage at a private memorial he hosted at L.A.'s Vista Theatre ... where he regaled the crowd with stories about his ol' pal Michael, who appeared in several of his movies, including "Reservoir Dogs" and "Kill Bill."
But it was Tarantino's story about the former film that really exemplified just who he was as a person.
Check out our clip ... QT is all smiles as he fondly remembers "crazy man" Lawrence wreaking havoc on the set of 'Dogs' -- and being so arrogant he decided to can him. Later that night, after an exhausting week of filming with Lawrence -- who died in 2002 -- Quentin said Michael called to say how much he respected the first-time director for taking a stance against his costar.
As you know, Quentin and Michael worked on several projects together, including "Once Upon a Time ... in Hollywood," "The Hateful Eight," "Sin City" and more.
After the memorial, Tarantino and a bunch other big name celebs left together and were snapped by paparazzi as they walked out of place. Among the stars who attended were Sean Penn and Daryl Hannah.
While Quentin was upbeat in spirit as he remembered his collaborator and friend, we're told by an attendee the memorial was emotionally charged ... with plenty of tears shed.
There was also a showcase of various memorabilia items of Michael's from over the years, such as action figures, a handwritten note, and his photography book, "Signs of Life."
We broke the news -- Michael was found unresponsive in his Malibu home in early July by his assistant and longtime friend. We were told he had just gotten the all-clear from doctors after undergoing a PET scan just days prior.
Michael died from cardiac arrest. He was 67.

Watch This Documentary About ‘Star Trek: Phase II' and See What Could've Been
The existence of Star Trek: Phase II—the plans for a Star Trek continuation series in the mid-1970s that eventually gave way to Star Trek: The Motion Picture—has been known for a very long time at this point. We've seen concept art, we've seen story ideas, and we've seen it for long enough to see how those nuggets have gone on to influence the Star Trek that we would go on to get for another 50 years. And yet, there's still plenty to enjoy in this new documentary about the bumpy road Star Trek almost made on the journey home back to our screens. Produced by the Roddenberry Archive and OTOY—the companies behind those viral Star Trek short films and a litany of other archival Trek projects and videos—Lost Voyages is a 30-minute documentary that charts the story of what happened when Paramount realized the success it had on its hands when Star Trek became a syndication hit. It covers early potential movies that never happened, all the way through the ideation and early production work for the next Star Trek show—and how things fell apart when the last-minute decision was made to take one of its episodes, 'In Thy Image,' and turn it into a theatrical Star Trek movie. Alongside insight from Phase II producer Jon Povill and writers Judith and Garfield Reeves-Stevens (and even Trek icons George Takei and Walter Koenig), Lost Voyages offers a lot of fascinating insight into how Phase II came about and gives plenty of crisp looks at behind-the-scenes material from the show's production.
