Unesco field evaluators arrive to conduct final assessment for Sarawak Delta Geopark

KUCHING (June 24): Two United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (Unesco) field evaluators arrived here yesterday to conduct the final evaluation of the Sarawak Delta Geopark (SDGp) for Unesco Global Geopark (UGGp) status.
Jean-Simon Pagés from France and Antonio Garcia Jiménez from Spain were welcomed at the Kuching International Airport arrival hall by Sarawak director of forests Datu Hamden Mohammad.
'We are proud to announce that the Unesco field evaluation mission is scheduled for June 23 to 26. This mission represents the final, most critical step in becoming the first Unesco Global Geopark in the state,' he said.
Hamden said during the four-day mission, the two evaluators would visit a range of significant sites showcasing the unique geological, biological and cultural diversity of the Sarawak Delta.
These include the Schist Tuang in Semeba and Paku Rock Maze in Bau; Wind Cave Nature Reserve in Bau; Semenggoh Nature Reserve in Padawan; Borneo Cultures Museum in Kuching; Sarawak Cultural Village in Santubong; Kampung Peros, Krokong in Bau; and SMK Paku in Bau.
He said this was a pivotal milestone that would determine whether the SDGp meets the rigorous UGGp standards set by Unesco.
'It also represents a significant opportunity to highlight Sarawak's commitment to sustainable development, geo-conservation, education and community empowerment through geopark initiatives.'
The SDGp is a unique region that features rich geological diversity and stunning landscapes spanning an area of 3,112 square kilometres.

It is home to various indigenous tribes that not only sustain themselves, but preserve and cultivate their distinct cultures and traditions.
The region's geological history reflects significant transformations in the Earth's surface, driven by tectonic activity around 250 million years ago.
The changes are not confined to Southeast Asia, but also illustrate geological phenomena spanning both Europe and Asia — as a result, many sites within the Sarawak Delta represent geological heritage of international significance.

The mission, held since June 23, concluded with a dinner held tonight at the Waterfront Hotel here, attended by Unesco evaluators Jean-Simon Pagés and Antonio Garcia Jiménez, stakeholders from various agencies, academia, and local communities. Deputy State Urban Planning, Land Administration and Environment Minister, Datuk Len Talif Salleh, said geopark represents more than just a geological area, but a living classroom and scientific archive that tells the story of Sarawak's natural evolution, biodiversity, and cultural heritage. 'From the dramatic Karst limestone outcrops of Santubong to the ancient sediments along the coastline and river deltas, our geopark showcases more than 200 million years of geological history, layered with mythology, multicultural heritage, and traditional knowledge passed down through generations,' he said during the dinner. He added that the initiative also reflects the state's integrated approach to natural resource management, tourism, education, and community development. 'We have built partnerships with academic institutions, invested in geotourism infrastructure, supported local entrepreneurs, and developed education programmes for our schools and youth because we know that the future stewards of this land are the ones seated in our classrooms today,' he said. What is a geopark? A Unesco Global Geopark is an area with internationally significant geological heritage that is managed with a holistic approach to conservation, education and sustainable development. Globally, there are 229 Unesco Global Geoparks across 45 countries. Unlike national parks, geoparks focus on community involvement, promoting geotourism and raising awareness on environmental issues such as climate change, disaster risk reduction, and sustainability. Importance to Sarawak If successful, the Sarawak Delta Geopark will be the first in Sarawak to join the Unesco Global Geopark network. Len Talif said the process of preparing for the evaluation had deepened their understanding towards the land, brought together stakeholders from diverse sectors, and strengthened the resolve to preserve this unique natural and cultural landscape. 'Whether or not we are awarded the status, this process has already transformed us,' he said. He also paid tribute to the communities living within the geopark, crediting their stewardship, crafts, and local knowledge as the soul of the initiative. 'This is a shared achievement, one that demonstrates the power of collaboration, the strength of local wisdom, and the vision of Sarawak as a global player in sustainable development,' he said. He emphasised that this assessment is not the end, but a new beginning. BANGKOK, June 26 — Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo highlighted the nation's initiatives in advancing responsible artificial intelligence (AI) governance and fostering regional collaboration during the 3rd Unesco Global Forum on the Ethics of Artificial Intelligence (GFEAI 2025) on Wednesday. Gobind emphasised Malaysia's commitment to promoting responsible AI governance, encouraging regional partnerships, and ensuring that the country's progress aligns with globally recognised ethical standards. 'As AI continues to evolve, meaningful dialogue and international cooperation are essential for building a future that is inclusive, secure, and beneficial to all,' he said during the high-level ministerial panel titled Fostering Global Dialogue on AI for a Collective Future at the Unesco GFEAI 2025. Earlier, Gobind participated in a panel discussion titled 'From Readiness Assessment to Enhanced Institutional, Technical and Human Capacities in AI.' During the session, he highlighted Malaysia's achievements, including strengthening nationwide connectivity, adopting a multi-faceted approach to infrastructure, talent, and trust development, and introducing data centre regulations to position Malaysia as a regional hub for data infrastructure. 'I am confident that many more commendable milestones lie ahead. That said, I firmly believe that the next phase of advancement must be underpinned by robust and forward-looking policies and regulations.
