SOUTHEND Diving star Todd Geggus has won another silver medal at the Junior European Championship in Greece
Following on from winning a silver medal in the 3m Synchronised diving with teammate Connor Lano, 18-year-old Todd competed in the individual 3m springboard event in Athens.

The preliminary rounds to qualify for the 12-diver finals got underway on Friday afternoon with 30 divers from 19 countries performing five optional and five voluntary dives.
The incredibly strong field of 18-year-olds/under included all the top European juniors including Germany, AIN (Russia - neutral individual divers), Ukraine, and Italy.
Todd performed with confidence and assuredness throughout to ensure he made the final fairly comfortably in fourth place, but a few more points adrift of the top three than he liked.
In the final, the divers only compete their hardest five optional dives, with Todd having one of the highest tariff/degree of difficulty list of dives in the event.

Todd stepped up a gear with some great board work and height on his dives and excellent clean finishes.
After round three of five, he was in first place with Italy, Ukraine, and two German divers snapping at his heels and fighting to stay with him.
Many other divers in the final also had high tariff dives but faltered on one or two of them, gradually leaving Todd and Valerio Mosca of Italy fighting for the gold.
On his fourth dive, a reverse 2/ ½ somersaults piked, Todd slightly crimped his knees and lost a few points from the judges for that, allowing the Italian Valerio Mosca to ease ahead of him by 10.65 points.

Everything rested on the final dive of both boys to decide gold and silver.
Todd performed a high-difficulty forward 2½ somersaults piked, with two twists that he absolutely nailed but Valerio also executed his last dive extremely well to retain first place and finally take the gold from Todd by just 3.85 points in an incredibly exciting final.
Coach Shan Veasey was ecstatic with Todd's performance, saying, 'Todd demonstrated great coolness and determined consistency throughout the final.
'His concentration was excellent, as were his dives apart from a minor flaw here and there.
'I couldn't have been prouder of him.
'His super score against such high-level opposition is the culmination of some very good performances in the last year, coupled with all the hard work done in training to develop new dives and to consolidate them in time for this prestigious European Junior Championships.'

Lee Westwood qualifies for British Open, his first major since joining LIV

IRVINE, Scotland (AP) — Lee Westwood had rounds of 70-67 at Dundonald Links to earn his way into the British Open, his first major since the former world No. 1 joined Saudi-funded LIV Golf three years ago. Westwood was among 20 players who earned their places at Royal Portrush through Final Regional Qualifying, held over four courses in England and Scotland, each awarding five spots. He was among three LIV players from the 15 who showed up for qualifiers. Westwood, a 52-year-old from England with 25 titles on the European tour and three Order of Merit titles, led the five qualifiers at Dundonald at 7-under 137. 'I've always said it's the greatest championship in golf and as a British player you get phenomenal support,' Westwood said. 'I'm just looking forward to enjoying the week at Portrush, seeing a few old friends and enjoying that golf course.' The Open is July 17-20 at Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland, where Shane Lowry won in 2019. Westwood was one shot out of the lead through 36 holes before tying for fourth, nine shots behind Lowry. Two other LIV Golf players, Lucas Herbert of Australia and Dean Burmester of South Africa, also earned spots in The Open. Herbert led qualifiers at West Lancashire, while Burmester led the way at Royal Cinque Ports. Graeme McDowell, who grew up at Portrush, was among five LIV players who missed out at Royal Cinque Ports. That included Ian Poulter and his 21-year-old son Luke, who plays at Florida and was an alternate at the U.S. Open last month. Seven other LIV players didn't make it, either finishing outside the top five or withdrawing in the middle of the round. Three others withdrew before it started. LIV Golf wrapped up an event in Dallas on Sunday, and players had to fly straight to the U.K. for qualifying. Westwood was No. 1 in the world toward the end of 2010. He once was considered among the best never to have won a major, twice a runner-up at the Masters and missing out on a playoff by one shot at the U.S. Open (2008 at Torrey Pines) and British Open (2009 at Turnberry). ___

Kylian Mbappe makes Club World Cup debut, Real Madrid leads Juventus 1-0

A day after a pair of European giants were slain by underdog teams in the Club World Cup Round of 16, it was time for another pair to face off at Hard Rock Stadium: Real Madrid played Juventus in a salivating mid-afternoon matchup with a spot in the quarterfinals on the line. The 'Madrid!' chants began less than a minute after the opening whistle and a sea of white Madridistas and a smaller, but spirited, number of fans wearing Juventus' trademark black and white vertical stripes nearly filled the 65,000-seat stadium on a dreary day that began with a deluge. After a scoreless first half, the crowd was desperate for a goal and got a beautiful one in the 54th minute from Gonzalo Garcia with an uncontested header from six yards out after a perfectly placed high cross from Trent Alexander-Arnold. It was the third goal in four Club World Cup games for Garcia, the 21-year-old Spaniard. One of the biggest storylines of the game was the return of Madrid's French star Kylian Mbappe, who made his tournament debut after missing all three group matches against Al Hilal, Pachuca and RB Salzburg after being diagnosed with acute gastroenteritis on the eve of the tournament. Mbappe was hospitalized during the opening days of the competition and has been working his way back to game fitness. He began Tuesday's match on the bench and was greeted with a huge cheer during warmups and then another ovation when he emerged from the tunnel after halftime. 'Mbappe! Mbappe!' the crowd chanted, as the forward warmed up midway through the second half. And then, fans roared when he entered the game in the 68th minute, replacing Garcia. Madrid coach Xabi Alonso said in the leadup to the match: 'It's a big possibility that he makes his Club World Cup debut tomorrow, though. I don't know how much, but it's a big possibility.' Read Madrid's Starting XI included Thibaut Courtois, Dean Huijsen, Aurelien Tchouameni, Antonio Rudiger, Fran Garcia, Arda Guler, Federico Valverde, Jude Bellingham, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Vinicius Junior, Gonzalo Garcia. Alonso took over the club less than a month ago, replacing Carlo Ancelotti. He previously coached at Bayer Leverkusen was a standout midfielder with Madrid, Liverpool and Bayern Munich. 'Every single match is now all or nothing,' Alonso said. 'It's a huge match and we have been preparing for the last few weeks to be ready. We are at the knockout stage now, last 16 against a top team like Juve, so we will have to have a very complete performance to go through. 'This match is important. It's a very different competition to those we normally play in, but Real Madrid is very demanding, and you are expected to win. This is our third week together. I am pumped, very excited.' Another Real Madrid player in the spotlight Tuesday was midfielder Luka Modric, the Croatian great who turns 40 in September and will leave for AC Milan after the Club World Cup. Modric started on the bench and fans hoped to get a glimpse of him in what could be his last match in a Madrid jersey. Juventus coach Igor Tudor, a former Croatia teammate of Modric's, remarked: 'What can you say about Luka? We have less than 4 million people in Croatia, so a person like him brings a lot of pride for the country. He is a player that you all see, but he is just a normal person. He represents our country in the best possible way. I love him and I hope he will keep having fun, even though he is now 40.' The starting lineup for the Italian club was: Michele De Gregorio, Lloyd Kelly, Daniele Rugani, Pierre Kalulu, Andrea Cambiaso, Khephren Thuram, Manuel Locatelli, Alberto Costa, Kenan Yildiz, Randal Kolo Muani, and Francisco Conceicao.
