New 3G pitch officially opened at Risca Leisure Centre
Councillor Chris Morgan, cabinet member for leisure, said: "This development reflects our commitment to providing high-quality, accessible facilities that support both education and lifelong participation in sport.
"The 3G pitch enhances our ability to deliver the aims of the sport and active recreation strategy, ensuring that more people can enjoy the benefits of physical activity close to home."
The floodlit pitch replaces the previous AstroTurf surface and is designed to accommodate both football and rugby.
Its durable artificial surface allows for year-round use by schools, clubs, and community groups.
The project supports Caerphilly County Borough Council's Sport and Active Recreation Strategy 2019–2029 and forms part of the authority's wider Place Shaping programme.
Councillor Carol Andrews, cabinet member for education and communities, said: "This facility is an excellent example of how we can maximise the use of school sites for the benefit of both learners and the wider community.
"It is a clear demonstration of our Place Shaping principles in action, creating shared spaces that improve education, health, and community wellbeing."
The pitch was funded through the Welsh Government's Community Focused Schools capital grant programme.
It is part of a broader investment in modern, accessible sports infrastructure across the borough.
The 3G surface is designed to handle frequent use and provide a safe environment for a range of sports and activities.
Bookings for the facility are now being taken in line with the council's pitch allocation policy.

'Blackwood's sporting future looks bright'
The recent Blackwood Beach Party drew more than 5,500 visitors to the town. The event was funded by Blackwood Town Council and organised by Caerphilly County Borough Council. The success of the event can be measured in that it attracted 2,000 more visitors than the previous weekend. It resulted in the second busiest day of the year in the town. We all know that the ease and attractiveness of online shopping can have a negative impact on physical retail. Yet, the importance of our shared spaces is integral to our sense of community that. Blackwood's sporting future looks bright. I was delighted to see the South Wales Argus cover Blackwood Primary School's annual sports presentation. Ninety-seven pupils were recognised from years three to six who have represented the school in competitions throughout the academic year. It was great to see the school become champions of the entire South East Wales cricket finals organised by Cricket Wales. Let's hope that one day some of these talented youngsters may have the opportunity of playing regional representative cricket and, who knows, even for Wales' professional cricket team, Glamorgan. I was delighted to sponsor at the Senedd a celebration of Welsh creativity. Curated under the theme "Create It", TEDx Bute Street 2025 showcased an exceptional roster of individuals shaping the future of activism, arts, technology, and cultural discourse. The selection process, overseen by a distinguished judging panel - Professor Dylan Jones-Evans OBE, Matthew Hyde, and Chris J Birch - was a rigorous journey through compelling stories and pioneering thought, ultimately culminating in an unmissable line up of Welsh visionaries. Ken Skates has announced that from September 2025 bus fares will be capped for £1 for 16 to 21 year olds, while the £1 cap will come in place in November for five to 15 year olds. Sixteen to 21-year-olds will need to apply for a free mytravelpass, if they don't currently have one, and are able to do so now. More information on how the scheme will work is available at mytravelpass - Caerphilly County Borough Council announced the official opening of a new dual use 3G all-weather pitch at Risca School and Leisure Centre, funded by the Welsh Government's Community Focused Schools capital grant programme. New 3G pitch complete at Caerphilly sporting excellence hub
The previous surface at he Centre for Sporting Excellence in Ystrad Mynach had reached the end of its lifespan. The investment in the new facility is part of Caerphilly County Borough Council's Sport and Active Recreation Strategy. The renewed pitch enhances the overall quality of the site and strengthens its position as a Level 3 strategic facility for both club and community use. Chris Morgan, cabinet member for leisure, said: 'The improved pitch ensures we continue to provide the best possible environment for local clubs, schools and professional teams to thrive. "It shows how serious we are about delivering high quality, sustainable facilities across the county borough.' The centre is used by local sports clubs, school teams and college learners. Coleg y Cymoedd students regularly use it as part of their sporting and educational development, and Dragons RFC has renewed its long-term commitment to the site as its primary training base. WorldSkills UK National Finals to Be Held in Wales for the First Time
The WorldSkills UK National Finals 2025 is set to be hosted in Wales for the first time in November. With 417 competitors taking part from across the UK and 47 finals planned, this event is a nationwide celebration of world-class vocational and technical training. A record breaking 120 young people from across Wales have earned their place following standout performances in qualifier heats. This means 29% of the national finalists will be made up of Welsh competitors – an increase from last year's one in four. Welsh Government confirmed its partnership to host the UK National Finals with Inspiring Skills Excellence and WorldSkills UK last September, following the successful WorldSkills finals in Lyon. That collaboration has paved the way for this year's National Finals to take place across five venues in Wales, from 26 to 28 November. Competitors will demonstrate their abilities in a wide range of disciplines, including 3D Digital Game Art, Aircraft Maintenance, Health and Social Care and Culinary Arts. Those who impress under pressure might be selected to represent the UK on the international stage at the 'Skills Olympics' in Japan in 2028. Minister for Culture, Skills and Social Partnership Jack Sargeant, said: 'These competitions show the real-world value and applications of apprenticeships and are invaluable in futureproofing our economy. 'I am proud Wales is hosting the WorldSkills Finals UK 2025. We have a beautiful country, and I hope all visitors will take some time to explore it. 'I wish this new cohort of competitors pob lwc – I know you'll do yourselves and us all proud.' An integral part of the post-16 education and training calendar, the WorldSkills UK Competitions attract over 6,000 registrations from across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland annually. The competition-based training programmes provide education institutions and employers with opportunities to develop and benchmark the abilities of their students and apprentices against international standards. Mark Wright, apprentice at International Crusher Solutions Ltd, is competing in the Metal Fabricator competition. He said: 'I started out in Construction Metalwork competitions last year and won gold in the Skills Competition Wales with the highest score in the region, and Silver in WorldSkills UK. 'I enjoyed them so much that I decided to go for the UK qualifiers this year in Metal Fabrication too, and I'm over the moon to be heading to the WorldSkills UK National Finals. It's a great experience, and I just focus, get stuck in, and enjoy it.' Elara Jones, who is competing in the Beauty Therapy Practitioner competition, said: 'Winning gold at Skills Competition Wales and now being selected for the WorldSkills UK National Finals shows that all the hard work and effort I've put in has really paid off. 'I'm so pleased, it feels like everything I've done has been building up to this moment, and it means a lot to see it all lead to something so exciting.' Bradley Claringbold, who is heading to WorldSkills UK to compete in the Industrial Electronics competition for the second time, added: 'I started with Skills Competition Wales and won gold – it was fun, something completely new, and I'd never done anything like it before. 'I got selected for the WorldSkills UK National Finals last year but didn't place in the top three, so this year I'm going back in to improve and show how far I've come. The additional training has helped me learn so much more, and I'm really excited to have another shot.'
