Industrialist Baba Kalyani's sister accuses him of fraud amid samadhi dispute

India Today25-04-2025

The ongoing dispute between one of the country's top industrialists, Baba Kalyani, and his sister Sugandha Hiremath over the construction of the memorial shrine (Samadhi) of their mother Sulochana Kalyani refuses to die down as the latter has filed a lawsuit against her brother, accusing him of "playing fraud on the court".In her affidavit filed before the Pune Civil Court on Friday, Sugandha stated that Baba "even today continues to shift his stand and is guilty of deliberate deception". Her statement was based on depositions that Baba Kalyani made in court.advertisementSugandha claims that, immediately after their mother's demise in February 2023, she requested her brother Baba that a samadhi should be built in her memory, right next to their father's samadhi on a plot in Keshav Nagar in Pune. However, Baba chose to immerse her ashes in a river instead.
Days before their mother's second death anniversary, Sugandha said she wrote to Baba to build the samadhi, but he dismissed it and asked her to do so on the plot where Parvati Nivas stands.Sulochana Kalyani used to stay with her younger son Gaurishankar at Parvati Nivas, when she breathed her last. The plot is under Gaurishankar and his wife Rohini's control. As per Sugandha's petition, she scoffed at the idea of Samadhi at Parvati Nivas as it was her mother's wish to be buried next to her husband at the Keshav Nagar plot.advertisementWhen Baba did not relent, Sugandha approached the Pune court and filed a suit. On the very first hearing on February 13, 2025, Baba's side produced a mail from the industrialist which stated that he was willing to talk to his siblings along with their family priest about building the samadhi. A meeting for the same was slated a week later. When the meeting took place, Baba told Sugandha that he had already installed a Shivlinga at Jangamwadi Math in Kashi in their mother's name and that she should not insist on samadhi in the Keshav Nagar plot. Sugandha and her husband, Jai Hiremath, went to Kashi only to find that a small Shivlinga was located with over a lakh others in the Math and did not even slightly resemble a samadhi.
At this, Sugandha expressed shock, claiming her brother had "deceived her yet again". To this, Baba filed an affidavit clarifying that the meeting for samadhi was to happen between all the Kalyani siblings. But since their younger brother Gaurishankar did not participate, it did not reach fruition. Moreover, he stated that all the rituals suggested by Jagadguru had been followed after their mother's demise, indicating that the demand for samadhi was baseless. Baba also added that the Keshav Nagar plot belonged to a company and not him.Sugandha, in her recent affidavit, has come down heavily on Baba and has requested the court to take action against him and alleged that this is also a fraud on the court. The case has been kept for hearing next on June 27.Must Watch

‘Kaanta Laga' star Shefali Jariwala dies of cardiac arrest at 42

1 2 Mumbai/New Delhi: Shefali Jariwala, whose sizzling gyration and rebellious abandon in the music video of the remixed track 'Kaanta Laga' (original song from 'Samadhi', 1972) became a dance floor favourite, annoyed social conservatives and helped sell over a million cassettes, CDs and albums, passed away following a cardiac arrest on Friday night. She was 42. Jariwala was rushed to a private hospital close to her Andheri West residence by husband-actor Parag Tyagi, but was declared dead on arrival. "Her family told doctors she was unwell with acidity and had not eaten the entire day," a senior police officer told TOI. As per legal procedure, the hospital alerted the Amboli police (because the patient had not been admitted before her death), and an accidental death report (ADR) under Section 194 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) was filed. A mobile forensic team also visited her home late Friday to collect samples for toxicological analysis. Jariwala's viscera samples have been preserved for forensic analysis. Results of the post-mortem report and the chemical analysis are expected by Sunday and are likely to provide better clarity on what exactly caused the cardiac arrest. The police officer, who spoke with the doctors, told TOI that Zariwala was taking medications for skin whitening, hormonal tablets as well as vitamins with reportedly anti-ageing properties. "Jariwala was reportedly in the habit of taking 8–9 different vitamin supplements daily," the officer said. The Amboli police confirmed that they have recorded statements from Shefali Jariwala's husband, her parents, domestic help and her cook as part of routine inquiry in an ADR case. Jariwala's death ended a career which had peaked following the super success of the 'Kaanta Laga' music video in 2003. The song accelerated the short-lived trend of sensuous music videos, many recreated from 1970s RD Burman classics, that flooded music television channels in early years of the new millennium. 'Kaanta Laga' was part of the best-selling remix album, DJ Doll. 'Kaanta Laga' was reprised in the Salman-Priyanka-Akshay starrer, 'Mujhse Shaadi Karoge' (2004) underlining the music video's eyeball-grabbing power. In the film, Shefali boogeyed with Akshay Kumar. In a telephone interview in 2003, Shefali had said that acting in the video was a turning point in her life. "I have been recognized even in Middle East countries," she said. She was an engineering student then. Her progression, thereafter, was modest. Jariwala performed in the dance show, 'Nach Baliye', in 'Bigg Boss 13', and, more recently, in the supernatural horror, 'Shaitani Rasmein' (2024), where she played a powerful female spirit, Kapalika. Incidentally, another participant of 'Bigg Boss 13', actor Sidharth Shukla, had died of a heart attack in 2021. Jariwala had a sizeable 3.4 million followers on Instagram. Last week, she had posted a reel while getting ready for a shoot to the words of athlete-turned-influencer JB Copeland, "It's time for us to start living life, like everything else is working out in our favour." Jariwala's sudden death was widely mourned on social media. Among those who posted tributes were singer Mika Singh, actors Kiku Sharda, Kamya Punjabi and All Indian Cine Workers Association.

Kalyani family feud escalates: Baba Kalyani's sister Sugandha alleges asset grab by younger brother

Pune: Sugandha Hiremath , sister of industrialist Baba Kalyani , on Friday accused her younger brother Gaurishankar Kalyani of usurping ancestral properties in Karad, Maharashtra, as part of an ongoing legal battle over the division of Kalyani family assets in a Pune court . In an affidavit, Sugandha claimed she has uncovered evidence that two large family-owned properties in Karad were transferred to Gaurishankar, allegedly using a power of attorney (POA) granted by their late father Neelkanth Kalyani. The affidavit states that legal disputes over these properties, filed earlier by their father, are still pending in a Karad court. The allegations are part of a suit filed by Sugandha, her husband Jaidev Hiremath, and their two children, seeking partition of the Kalyani family assets to claim their share of the Kalyani Hindu Undivided Family (HUF) assets. The disputed assets include stakes in Kalyani group flagship Bharat Forge along with other listed and privately held companies as well as properties across the country. Sugandha has sought an injunction restraining her brothers from alienating any family assets, including promoter shares of about 250 group companies, until the case is resolved. Sha has also sought a directive for both her brothers to disclose the full list of family properties. Live Events In an earlier hearing in March, the court had observed that, given the family relationships, nature of the suit, and pendency of related proceedings, it would be appropriate to hear all parties before issuing any interim orders. In Friday's hearing, Sugandha's counsels alleged that Gaurishankar concealed information about the properties in Karad and ongoing disputes in courts there. The partition suit is now slated to come up for hearing on July 22. The Pune-based Kalyani Group, led by Baba Kalyani, is a multinational conglomerate with interests in engineering, automotive components, specialty chemicals, and renewable energy.

Islamic State group was behind deadly attack on Damascus church, says Syria

The sleeper cell behind a deadly church bombing near Damascus belonged to the Islamic State group, which had plans to target a Shiite shrine in a similar attack, Syria's Interior Ministry spokesperson said on Tuesday. Sunday's attack on the Mar Elias church killed at least 25 people. The attack was the first of its kind in Syria in years, and comes as Damascus under de facto Islamist rule is trying to win the support of the country's minorities. Noureddine Al-Baba told journalists a second attacker was caught Monday on his way to target a Shiite shrine in the Sayyida Zeinab suburb in Damascus, where many sites of the Islamic sect are located. Al-Baba said security forces also thwarted a third operation, where an attacker on a motorbike was going to target a crowded gathering in the capital. He did not give further details. We raided IS hideouts, seizing weapons and explosive caches, said Al-Baba, who said security forces were able to reach the sleeper cell's leader after interrogating the second attacker. He said the church bomber was not Syrian but did not give details. Al-Baba said cell leader Mohammad Abdelillah al-Jumaili was an IS leader responsible for recruiting extremists from the sprawling Al-Hol camp in northeastern Syria to conduct attacks. Tens of thousands of IS militants and their families from around the world live in Al-Hol, held by Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces. The SDF condemned the attack on Sunday. Meanwhile, funerals were held for the victims of the church bombing at the Church of the Holy Cross in Damascus. Church bells rang and women ululated as men walked through the weeping crowds carrying white coffins. The crowds cheered as the clergy honoured the victims as martyrs. Dima Beshara, 40, who lost her cousin Emil, 38, and seven other family members in the attack said Syria has always enjoyed religious coexistence and that she was among many from all sects who celebrated the downfall of ousted leader Bashar Assad in December. What did they do wrong? They went to the house of God to pray? Beshara said at the graveyard. Am I supposed to be scared every time I want to go and pray? She fears for her life and those of her loved ones, who regularly attend church for prayers, weddings and funerals. We love everyone. We don't have a problem with anyone. But we hope that they love us in return, she said.
