From balance sheets to building skylines: Ankur Aggarwal's journey from CA to CEO

Time of India15-07-2025
Before he became a real estate developer in Dubai, Ankur Aggarwal was a boy in Delhi tutoring younger kids to help his single mother make ends meet. His father had passed away when he was six.
With financial hardships came responsibilities. He began earning at eleven, and with that, the resolve to build something of his own one day was born.
Chartered Accountancy entered the picture through a cousin's suggestion. The course, with its intense training and relentless focus on discipline, enabled Ankur to refine his technical proficiency and develop valuable habits, including attention to detail and the ability to assess the value in people, ideas, and timing.
With a ₹70,000 loan from his sister, he started his own CA practice, where he built his clientele by fostering meaningful connections that lasted for years to come. Armed with financial knowledge, frameworks to assess risk, and the ability to think beyond the short term, he began with a brokerage business built on a truly cosmopolitan ethos and a global clientele. As Bricks and Woods (a name given by his wife) soared to new heights, Ankur decided to aim even higher and left behind the role of a broker, setting his sights on becoming a developer — determined to reach new heights.

One of his first land investments, on Al Marjan Island in Ras Al Khaimah, increased in value sixfold within two years. The decision, like most he makes, was backed by data and instinct.
Today, he heads a real estate company with a growing footprint in the UAE, managing assets worth ₹22 billion under development. But ask him what matters, and the answer is still rooted in the principles he learned early: ethics, consistency, and shared growth.
'You can't run far if you run alone,' he says. 'Your team, your clients, your investors, and your family carry you forward.'
To those at the beginning of their journeys, especially CAs, he suggests anchoring ambition in preparation: 'Make short-term goals with long-term thinking. Your job is to build systems that last longer than you do.'
On National CA Day, his story reflects what this qualification can offer beyond a job title. The training builds discipline, perspective, and the ability to see value where others may not. For Ankur, it became the foundation for something much bigger, and much more valuable.

Bail plea of six accused in Madurai property tax scam dismissed

Madurai: Taking into account that the revenue loss for Madurai corporation in the property tax scam might extend to several crores, the principal district judge in Madurai dismissed the bail plea of six people, including a suspended assistant commissioner and two temporary staff, who were arrested in connection with the case. The court was hearing the bail petitions filed by suspended assistant commissioner A Rengarajan, two temporary staff - technical assistant R Sathish, data entry operator S Karthik, and brokers - Rajesh Kumar, Saga Hussain, and Mohamed Noor, who own shops near corporation zonal offices. The public prosecutor submitted that the then corporation commissioner lodged a complaint in 2024 after he found some irregularities in the records regarding property tax assessment. Investigation revealed that Sathish, along with other accused, used the password and user ID of bill collectors and reduced the taxes for more than 150 buildings, causing a loss to the corporation. His involvement was revealed while verifying his cellphone. Apart from the petitioners, other people involved in the offence are yet to be identified. Investigation in this aspect is to be conducted in other corporation zones. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Get Your Personalized IQ Certificate Today Try Now Undo Out of 150 building owners, only 80 have been examined so far. On whose instructions the offences were committed is to be ascertained. The revenue loss caused to the corporation was estimated at Rs1.5 crore so far, and the loss may extend up to several crores. Investigation is at an early stage, said the public prosecutor while objecting to the grant of bail to the petitioners. The principal district judge, S Sivakadatcham, took note of the fact that the investigation is at a nascent stage and the prosecution has to examine the remaining building owners and other corporation employees. The judge also took note of the fact that the Madras high court directed the inspector general of police (south zone) and Madurai city commissioner of police to constitute a special investigation team to probe the scam. The judge said that if the petitioners are released on bail at this stage, there is a chance of tampering with the evidence and absconding, which will hinder the investigation. Considering all these aspects and the seriousness of the offences, the court holds that the petitioners deserve no consideration for bail at this stage, the judge said and dismissed their bail petitions on Monday.

128km, 24k cr: Plan To Declog Capital

New Delhi: In a significant push to alleviate the city's chronic traffic congestion, both Delhi govt and central govt have joined forces on a series of key infrastructure projects aimed at improving connectivity and easing traffic snarls across the capital and its surrounding areas. The National Highways Authority of India will take up six major road projects passing through Delhi, decongesting 128km at a cost of Rs 23,850 crore. The plans include a 17km link from NH344M to Tronica City and a 65km eastern extension of Urban Extension Road II connecting the Delhi-Dehradun Expressway to Noida via Ghaziabad and Faridabad. A 5km tunnel from Mahipalpur to Nelson Mandela Marg and a 20km elevated corridor from AIIMS to Faridabad Road aim to decongest south and central Delhi. A new interchange at Kalindi Kunj and a 20km extension of the Delhi-Amritsar-Katra Expressway complete the Rs 27,000 crore initiative. These projects will divert long-distance traffic from central Delhi, reduce pressure on NH44 and NH48, and improve regional connectivity with faster access to key expressways. The Kalindi Kunj interchange will ease movement between Delhi, Noida and Faridabad. Additionally, they will help manage traffic diversions and public communication to minimise disruption during construction. Coordination with police and municipal agencies for security and sanitation around the project site is another key area of support, an official said. Officials said that Delhi govt would also monitor project progress and ensure timely completion. "The collaboration between the Centre and state govt will enhance project efficiency, reduce delays, and ultimately benefit public infrastructure development in the city," he said. The initiative covers a total length of 128km and includes critical projects like the extension of the Delhi-Amritsar-Katra Expressway (NE-5) from KMPE to UER-II, the eastern extension of UER-II connecting to Noida via Ghaziabad and Faridabad, and the construction of a 5km road tunnel from Dwarka Expressway to Nelson Mandela Marg in Vasant Kunj. The Delhi-Amritsar-Katra Expressway extension, with a budget of Rs 4,000 crore, will provide seamless expressway connectivity for traffic from Jammu & Kashmir, Haryana, and Punjab towards Delhi, Gurgaon and Indira Gandhi International Airport. Similarly, the 65km eastern extension of UER-II is set to connect major roads and bypass Delhi's internal traffic hotspots by providing an alternative route to ease congestion on arterial roads such as Outer Ring Road and Sarai Kale Khan. Another project under close watch is the construction of a 5km underground road tunnel linking Dwarka Expressway with Nelson Mandela Marg. This Rs 3,500-crore tunnel aims to decongest key sections like Dhaula Kuan and Rao Tula Ram Marg by offering a direct, signal-free corridor between Dwarka/Gurgaon and south Delhi. Additionally, the elevated corridor stretching 20km from AIIMS to Mahipalpur Bypass and further extending to Gurgaon-Faridabad Road, with a cost of Rs 5,000 crore, will act as a parallel corridor easing traffic load on NH48 and connecting major city routes more efficiently. Apart from these, there are plans for the construction of a crucial interchange at Kalindi Kunj intersection, a notorious congestion point linking Delhi-Noida Road and Agra Canal Road near Okhla Barrage. Govt officials said that the complete blueprint of the project was shared by Union minister Nitin Gadkari with CM Rekha Gupta, with officials given instructions to work in a synchronised way for the decongestion of the capital.

IIT-G: Fee revised after 7 years to support students' welfare

Guwahati: IIT Guwahati authorities on Wednesday said a fee hike was imminent to support the cause of the students, even as PhD students at the institute continued their second day of protests on Wednesday against substantial fee increase across various heads. The students conducted a protest march on the campus on Tuesday night, while the IIT Guwahati administration maintained that the hike in fee has been made 'to support enhanced student welfare and activities'. 'IIT Guwahati revised the fee after seven years, and the increase for continuing students is Rs 8,900 per semester. This was made to support enhanced student welfare and activities, including increased allocations for hostel-level events, cultural and sports festivals, and Gymkhana-led initiatives beyond just Inter-IIT participation,' IIT Guwahati authority said in a statement on Wednesday. Following the fee increase announcement last month, PG and PhD students requested an open discussion to understand the fee component increases. The administration stated they held a four-hour discussion on July 17, explaining the fee increase details. "The students were also informed that the institute made provisions for loans through the Students' Welfare Fund to support the needy ones. At the conclusion of the meeting, with the clarifications in hand, the student body was asked to submit their representation if they had any further concerns. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Discover the upgrades that set the New Koda 2 Pro apart Ooni Pizza Ovens Learn More Undo No submission has been received so far," the IIT Guwahati authority claimed on Wednesday. The administration noted that the protest outside the administrative building that started on Tuesday was unexpected, occurring without prior notice or formal representation of concerns. "While a small group of students is protesting, the majority of the 8,400-strong student body is not participating in the protest," the administration claimed, although protesting PhD students asserted support from others unable to join. "This small group of protesting students bypassed the elected student body," the administration added, noting the elected student body statement: "Despite the ongoing dialogue within the elected student body to put up a proposal for consideration of fee revision, this small group of protesting students disobeyed the student representatives, jeopardising their efforts at reconciliation. The elected student body is not part of this protest and is also working through the proper channel for an amicable solution to the increased components of the fee. " The protesters highlight that PhD students' fee increased by Rs 10,900 for the July-Nov semester 2025, rising from Rs 34,800 in Jan-May 2025 to Rs 45,700.
