FIFA will test body cameras for referees and advanced offside detection at the Club World Cup in the USA.
FIFA Club World Cup (X)
FIFA announced on Friday that referees equipped with body cameras and an enhanced offside detection system will be key innovations at this year's Club World Cup in the United States.
For the first time in a FIFA tournament, match officials will wear body cameras, with selected footage broadcast live to audiences.
A new, advanced version of semi-automated offside technology, combining artificial intelligence, multiple cameras, and ball sensors, will be used to expedite decision-making, while maintaining VAR oversight for close calls. FIFA stated, 'However, for challenging offside scenarios, the video assistant referee will still validate the information provided by the system before a decision is made."
According to the governing body, the tournament, expanding to 32 teams this year, will serve as a significant testing ground for both systems.
Representatives from each of the six continental confederations will participate: AFC (Asia), CAF (Africa), Concacaf (North, Central America and the Caribbean), CONMEBOL (South America), OFC (Oceania), and UEFA (Europe).
The first edition of FIFA's new premier club competition, the FIFA Club World Cup 2025, will be hosted in the USA from 14 June to 13 July 2025.

Explained: Why the rainbow armband is dividing opinions at Women's Euro 2025

The rainbow armband at Women's Euro 2025 is sparking debate, with some teams proudly wearing it to support LGBTQ+ rights while others opt for UEFA's 'Respect' armband, citing broader inclusion. The controversy echoes similar debates from the 2022 Qatar World Cup. read more The rainbow armband, which is meant to show support for LGBTQ+ rights and diversity, is creating mixed reactions at the ongoing Women's Euro 2025 in Switzerland. It is dividing opinions among players and fans despite being a symbol of inclusion. Some captains like Switzerland's Lia Walti, Norway's Ada Hegerberg, England's Leah Williamson, and Wales' Angharad James have proudly worn the rainbow armband. Even England defender Lucy Bronze added a rainbow wristband during their quarterfinal win against Sweden. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Also Read: Why is rainbow armband dividing opinions? But not everyone is wearing it. Spain's Irene Paredes chose not to wear the colourful band, and France's captain Griedge Mbock Bathy wore a plain armband with the word 'Respect' instead. UEFA has given teams a choice between the rainbow armband and the 'Respect' version. France explained their decision, saying the rainbow armband focuses too much on just one issue, whereas the Respect band is of wider range. 'Highlighting a single issue also potentially excludes the others. We cannot champion a single cause through our diverse group because there are so many causes to defend,' Mbock said. More from Football 'Our team is so diverse that we cannot highlight just one cause. I think that the armband with the word 'respect' really represents what we want to convey as a message and that is the most important thing,' she added. Out of 16 teams in the tournament, nine have worn the rainbow armband. 'Standard yellow and blue armbands are provided to all teams and rainbow armbands are available upon request,' UEFA told Associated Press. This means that the teams who chose to wear the rainbow armband made an intentional decision. Also Read: This debate is not new. A similar controversy happened during the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, where FIFA banned the rainbow 'One Love' armband. German players famously covered their mouths in the team photo after their first match to protest the ban, saying they were being silenced. FIFA banned the armband because same sex relationships are not legal in Qatar. Qatari fans later responded with their own protest by holding pictures of Mesut Ozil, referencing racism he faced in Germany. Germany was a big supporter of rainbow armbands but later some voices, like coach Julian Nagelsmann, asked for fewer political statements in football because they distract from the game.

FIFA Chief Gianni Infantino Offers Support To England's Jess Carter After Online Racist Abuse

FIFA president Gianni Infantino offered support to England women's defender Jess Carter, who has been targeted with racist abuse during Euro 2025, saying the global body for the sport "shared data for appropriate action to be taken against any perpetrators". Carter, who has played for England since 2017 and was part of the team that won the Euro in 2022, earlier said that she is stepping away from social media for the duration of the tournament. "From the start of the tournament, I have experienced a lot of racial abuse... I don't agree, or think, it's OK to target someone's appearance or race. As a result of this, I will be taking a step back from social media and leaving it to a team to deal with," she had said. The Football Association CEO Mark Bullingham had strongly condemned those responsible for racism and said the FA "is in touch with the relevant social media platform and is working with police to ensure those responsible for this hate crime are brought to justice". Reacting to the matter, FIFA chief said, "I am deeply saddened to see the online abuse directed at England's Jess Carter during the ongoing Women's EURO tournament. There is no place for racism in football or in society." "We stand with Jess. We stand with every player and every individual who has suffered from racist abuse. No player should be discriminated against in any way, they should be free to be at their very best on the pitch. "Through FIFA's Social Media Protection Service, we have helped tackle such abuse across multiple tournaments. We will continue to collaborate and support confederations, FIFA Member Associations and their players. "In this instance, we will be offering our support with any further action required, as well as sharing data for appropriate action to be taken against any perpetrators," Infantino added in a statement.

How Pujara, Gill Convinced Jasprit Bumrah To Play FIFA: 'Won't Take Any Catches'

Cheteshwar Pujara has revealed the hilarious tale of how he, Shubman Gill, Rishabh Pant and Wriddhiman Saha convinced Jasprit Bumrah to play FIFA with them. News18 Cheteshwar Pujara has shared some wholesome insights into how Jasprit Bumrah is off the field. Speaking to the BBC, he narrated how in Bumrah's early years with the Test team, the team's FIFA group had to threaten him that they wouldn't take any catches off his bowling, just to convince the pacer to play the video game. Pujara covered a lot about Bumrah in the piece, how he was quicker than most Indian pacers in his initial years, and how his action made it difficult even for slip fielders. The former India number three said that off the field, Bumrah was reserved and introverted, who loved to spend as much time by himself in his room as possible. 'There was a group of us – myself, Shubman Gill, Rishabh Pant and former wicketkeeper Wriddhiman Saha – who would always be playing Fifa on the PlayStation while on tour and whenever we invited Jasprit it was hard work getting him there," Pujara said. 'In the end we had to joke that we wouldn't take any catches off his bowling if he didn't come. Bumrah needed the help of a good partner when playing Fifa – as a gamer he's not up to much – but it was on his first tour of England in 2018 when he went up another level as a bowler." Bumrah took 14 wickets in three Tests on that tour (his second Test series) and is yet to look back, becoming arguably the greatest pacer India has seen, with 217 scalps at 19.49. 'In the dressing room he is always watching the game. Most fast bowlers come off the field and relax with their feet up. He does relax but he always has an eye on the field. When I used to sit next to him he would always be giving an input on what our batters or the opposition could be doing differently, which is why he was viewed as a candidate to be captain before India appointed Shubman Gill," Pujara said. 'Most people talk about Bumrah's skills with the ball, his angle or his action but his biggest strength is often overlooked. He has a brilliant cricket brain which comes from his time in the IPL. There he worked with people like former Sri Lanka bowler Lasith Malinga and has gained the skills to outsmart a batter. His first instinct is always to bowl his best ball but if a batter gets in he knows all of their strengths and weaknesses. He has taken the skills from white-ball cricket to become the complete Test bowler," he added. Gill is leading and Bumrah has played two Tests in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. India trails the series 2-1 wit the fourth game at view comments First Published: July 21, 2025, 16:16 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
