
Eco-Shop launches the year's biggest IPO to date
Slated to debut on the Main Market of Bursa Malaysia on May 23, 2025, Eco-Shop is estimated to have a market capitalisation of RM7bil upon listing, making it Malaysia's biggest IPO for this year as of now.
Operating as a dollar chain store, Eco-Shop currently has about 350 stores nationwide and is planning to expand by opening up another 70 stores within one year after listing.
Executive director and chief executive officer Jessica Ng said there are ample opportunities and space to increase the number of outlets in Malaysia.
Despite not disclosing the specific locations for the planned outlets, she said the majority will be in underserved areas in the Klang Valley and states on the east coast.
'In the last 12 months, we focused a lot on Johor to maximise operational efficiency.
'But this year, we would like to open more stores in the Klang Valley.
'So, we hope we can make our presence more visible in the sector,' she explained during a press conference after the launch of Eco-Shop's prospectus here yesterday.
That being said, the group has allocated about 13.4% of the proceeds or RM56.27mil for the expansion of new chain stores.
When asked about the duration to reach breakeven per store, Ng said it would usually take about one year for each store to be profitable.
She stated that the group is looking to enhance its warehouse and distribution capabilities by developing a new semi-automated distribution centre in Klang, Selangor.
Eco-Shop will be acquiring a 307,560 sq- m-freehold medium industrial land for the construction of the distribution centre, with the deal to be financed via IPO proceeds amounting to RM200mil.
'This is in line with the growth in the number of our outlets,' Ng said.
An allocation of RM10.9mil or 2.6% of the proceeds has been put aside as the group also plans to invest in IT hardware and software to further enhance and support daily operations.
The remainder of the proceeds will be used to finance the repayment of bank borrowings, working capital and listing expenses at RM100mil, RM24.7mil and RM28mil, respectively.
On that note, Ng stated that the group remains confident in its future prospects despite the current uncertainties within the global economic landscape.
'The consumer sentiment is definitely shifting and people are more budget-conscious as well. So, Eco-Shop is a brand that really fits into this good value proposition,' she said.
On the trade war between the United States and China, she views it to be more advantageous for the group considering the opportunities presented from China's exports. About half of its products are imported and the remaining half are supplied locally.
Additionally, Ng shared that the group will be expanding its house brands by improving product display and revamping packaging and products as well as product innovation.
'Our house brand represents 70% of our stock keeping units and reflects close to 56% of our sales participation.
'Hence, our house brand plays a very critical role,' she explained, adding that house brands bring in higher margins.
Eco-Shop has 29 house brands as of today.
On top of its public offering, Eco-Shop will offer 675.37 million shares to institutional investors at a price to be determined through a book-building process – of which 10 investors were identified as cornerstone investors who collectively subscribed for 90.91 million shares or 90.31% of the institutional offering.
The cornerstone investors include Aham Asset Management, Albizia Capital Pte Ltd, Areca Capital Sdn Bhd, Eastspring Investments Bhd, Kairous Equity Sdn Bhd, Kenanga Investors Bhd, Kenanga Islamic Investors Bhd, Lion Global Investors Ltd, RHB Asset Management Sdn Bhd and RHB Islamic International Asset Management Bhd.
An offer for sale of up to 515.15 million existing shares was also made available.
Applications for the IPO are now open and will close on May 7, 2025 at 5pm.

Gold demand surges in Malaysia as investors seek safe haven

Its president, Datuk Wira Louis Ng, said central banks in countries such as China, Poland, and Kazakhstan are actively increasing their gold reserves to diversify their national holdings. 'While the demand for investment-grade gold is surging, we're seeing a decline in the gold jewellery segment across Asia, including traditionally strong markets like China and India,' he told Bernama. Ng noted that the international gold price has been holding steady at around US$3,300 per ounce, reflecting a 24 per cent increase since the start of the year. 'This price level is being supported by strong institutional demand, particularly from global fund managers acquiring gold through exchange-traded funds (ETFs) on behalf of high-value clients,' he said. He attributed this trend to widespread geopolitical tensions - including conflicts in the Middle East, the ongoing war in Ukraine, and trade frictions between the United States and China - which have heightened investor caution. 'Given these uncertainties, gold continues to be viewed as a reliable store of value. Central banks, institutional investors, and even retail investors are responding accordingly,' he noted. However, Ng acknowledged that retail demand for gold jewellery is facing headwinds. 'The retail jewellery market is on a downtrend and not seeing the same momentum as investment-grade gold,' he said. Looking ahead, Ng expects the gold market to remain stable in the near term. 'We anticipate prices to continue consolidating around the US$3,300 level, as investors keep a close eye on ongoing global tensions and economic developments,' he added. - Bernama

Deloitte: Malaysia leads Southeast Asia in IPO performance for 1H25
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia emerged at the top of the leaderboard for Southeast Asia's initial public offering (IPO) capital market with 66 per cent or US$940 million (US$1=RM4.24) raised across Southeast Asia during the first half of 2025 (1H 2025), according to the Deloitte Mid-Year IPO Snapshot 2025 report. The report highlighted that Malaysia's IPO capital market continued its impressive momentum from last year, leading the Southeast Asia bourses in all three key metrics: total IPO funds raised, market capitalisation and number of IPOs. In a statement today, Deloitte said household brand Eco-Shop Marketing Bhd led the IPO amount raised by Malaysia at US$230 million, and its share price rose six per cent on its first day on the Main Market of Bursa Malaysia. "With 32 IPOs in the 1H 2025, Malaysia has six top-10 listings in the region in 2025. It has the largest IPO listing in Southeast Asia thus far - a dollar store chain that raised US$230 million. "Malaysia recorded approximately 48 per cent increase in the number of listings, with IPO amount raised increasing by approximately 109 per cent, along with a corresponding uptick in total IPO market capitalisation by approximately 165 per cent," it said. According to the Deloitte report, the Southeast Asia capital market recorded 53 IPOs in 1H 2025, raising over US$1.4 billion in IPO proceeds and achieving US$7.7 billion in IPO market capitalisation. "This compares to 67 IPOs in 1H 2024, which raised under US$1.4 billion with over US$5.8 billion in market capitalisation," it said. Deloitte Malaysia Transactions Accounting Support partner Wong Kar Choon said the IPO outlook in Malaysia remains optimistic for the remainder of 2025, with 32 listings recorded as of June 30, 2025, putting Bursa Malaysia on track to meet its full-year target of 60 listings. "However, the recent US trade tariffs and geopolitical tension have introduced uncertainty, and we foresee that there could be an impact on the IPO market. "This situation may lead to cautious investor sentiments as investors may adopt a more cautious approach and favour less risky assets during these uncertain periods," he said. Selangor local government and tourism committee chairman Datuk Ng Suee Lim rubbished media reports that the appointment of the concessionaire was through direct tender. 'The state government, through Menteri Besar Incorporated's (MBI) subsidiary Rantaian Mesra Sdn Bhd, issued a RFP at the beginning of this year where 26 companies had applied. 'Three companies were then shortlisted before a decision on the awardee was made. 'So, claims that it was done through direct tender are baseless,' he said, during a press conference on the sidelines of the Selangor State Assembly sitting at Bangunan Dewan Negeri Selangor, Shah Alam. Ng said the state government was moving towards the Selangor Intelligent Parking (SIP) initiative to ensure that the management and maintenance of on-street parking in Selangor was modernised and equipped with Internet of Things (IoT) technology. 'By having a company solely focused on on-street parking collection and enforcement, councils will be relieved of those duties and can focus on other responsibilities,' he said. StarMetro learnt that the company signed the agreement with MBI in March after the RFP period. Ng said the on-street parking fee collection by the company would affect Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ), Subang Jaya City Council (MBSJ), Selayang Municipal Council (MPS) and Shah Alam City Council (MBSA). 'Currently, only 30% of motorists pay their parking fees statewide. 'For MBPJ, that amounts to RM13mil in annual revenue after deducting RM5mil in operating expenses. 'The low compliance is mainly due to the lack of manpower for enforcement. 'With the company dedicated to managing on-street parking, fee collection is projected to reach more than 60%. 'Based on the agreement, a total of 40% of the parking fee collection will go back to the council, 10% to MBI while 50% will go to the company,' he added. Ng said the concessionaire would also absorb a few enforcement officers by training them and placing them under its payroll. 'The agreement is for 10 years, plus an additional five years if the company meets the target for SIP, including installing closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras and a command centre in the long run. 'There will also be no changes to the parking rate, which ranges between 40sen and 60sen per hour depending on the council.'
