Red Sox All-Star Alex Bregman eyeing return without rehab starts
The two-time All-Star third baseman, who has been sidelined since May 24 with a strained right quad, said there's even a chance his return could happen by the end of this week.
'Trending toward a return here pretty quickly,' Bregman said Monday night after Boston's 9-3 win over the Rockies. 'Whether it's the end of this week or first game after the break. One of those two. But hoping it will be the end of this week.'
Boston finishes it's three-game series with Colorado on Wednesday, then hosts Tampa Bay for a four-game series Thursday through Sunday to conclude its first-half schedule.
Boston had high hopes for Bregman entering the season after he signed as a free agent to a $120 million, three-year deal during the offseason. And he had had been on a torrid pace to start the season, hitting .299 with 11 homers and 35 RBIs before suffering his injury.
Monday marked the 40th game he's been sidelined
His injury is similar to the one he sustained to his left quad strain in 2021 with Houston, which cost him 58 games. But unlike that injury, Bregman said he is hopeful he can return to action without a stint in the minors
Though, he said an ultimate decision will be made after a consultation with the medical and training staff.
'We're still going to talk about it as a group,' Bregman said. 'I think we're going to have another discussion (Tuesday). But I feel like I can go play and get ready to go.'

The timing synchs up with Bregman being named to his third All-Star team on Sunday as a reserve. But, he said he doesn't think there's any chance he'd be able to participate.
While he said he may make an appearance and take his son to the home run derby, he'll spend the rest of the break maintaining his fitness in preparation for the second half of the season.
'What I need to do is hopefully be back playing by the end of this week and use the All-Star break to continue to build up, work on my leg and make sure that we continue the progression the right way.'

Create Account The All-Star captain participated in practice Monday which was open to season ticket holders, playing in a 5-on-5 scrimmage. It was the first time she'd done that since getting hurt on June 26. Barring any setbacks, Clark will be available to play Wednesday. 'It's nice to get back out there and get back into the flow of playing with my teammates again,' Clark told reporters after practice Tuesday. 'It's going to be fun to get back out there hopefully and just feel things again. … It's obviously hard sitting out and watching for a few weeks, so I'm excited to get out there.' It was Clark's second injury of the season. She's only played in nine of the team's 18 games this season as well as the WNBA Commissioner's Cup final which saw the Fever beat the Minnesota Lynx. Clark had a left quad injury that forced her to miss five games last month. 'I hope to play a decent amount — in the upper 20s. I guess it depends on how the game goes and how I feel and what the team needs,' Clark said. 'But I feel pretty good. Italian soccer great Giorgio Chiellini joins LAFC ownership group
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Italian soccer great Giorgio Chiellini will be returning to Los Angeles FC as part of the club's ownership group, the team said Tuesday. The 40-year-old Chiellini, who spent nearly two decades playing for Italian club Juventus before joining LAFC in 2022, also spent time as a player development coach with the MLS team in 2024. 'Joining the LAFC ownership group is a great honor for me,' Chiellini said in a statement released by the team. 'When I arrived here three years ago as a player, I immediately felt that there was something special about this club. It is an ambitious organization, built by extraordinary people and supported by a community that truly makes you feel at home. That is why, last year, I expressed my desire to become an owner, and now I'm proud to continue this journey and give my support to a project I deeply believe in.' Chiellini, one of the best defenders in the world during his 23-year professional career, retired in 2023. He won nine consecutive Serie A championships with Juventus and the Euro 2020 title with the Italian national team. His final two seasons were spent with LAFC, where he appeared in 45 matches, including seven in the MLS Cup Playoffs and three in the 2023 Leagues Cup. During his many years with Juventus, Chiellini earned Serie A Defensive Player of the Year honors three times in addition to being named to the Italian league's Team of the Year five times. Brazilian club Botafogo hires son of Carlo Ancelotti as its manager
RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — Brazilian club Botafogo has hired the son of Brazil coach Carlo Ancelotti as its new manager. The 35-year-old Davide Ancelotti was handed a contract through 2026 to take up his first full-time coaching job after Botafogo owner John Textor fired Renato Paiva following the team's round-of-16 elimination at the Club World Cup. The Italian has worked for more than a decade alongside his father in different roles at Bayern Munich, Napoli, Everton, and Real Madrid. He is also part of Ancelotti's staff at Brazil. Botafogo is the defending Brazilian and Copa Libertadores champion. Textor recently said he wanted his team to adopt a more attacking style of play. Brazil's soccer confederation said in a statement that Davide Ancelotti's deal with Botafogo allows him to continue working with the national team ahead of the 2026 World Cup. The younger Ancelotti is expected to make his debut on Saturday against Vasco da Gama in a Brazilian league match.
