Xiaomi Malaysia to grow premium smartphone segment

XIAOMI Technologies Malaysia Sdn Bhd (Xiaomi Malaysia), which has opened the brand's biggest Southeast Asian retail outlet at The Exchange TRX, Kuala Lumpur, is growing its premium smartphone segment as competition heats up, while expanding its product lines and categories.
'We are paying more attention to the premium segment. The entry segment is hard to survive as its margin is more competitive,' Xiaomi Malaysia country manager Eddie Huang told a media interview after launching its latest outlet yesterday.
He said the brand's entry segment makes up the larger chunk of its sales locally. In China, Xiaomi is bigger in the middle and premium segments.
'Investing in retail outlets and improving our after-sales service can help us to increase sales in the premium segment.
'Our mission is to make Xiaomi's technology accessible for everyone. We have a full range of products, from entry segment to premium segment, from smartphones to tablets. Before this, we focused on the entry segment, but now we try to do more things, such as going into the premium segment and different product lines,' he explained, adding that home appliances is its new product line this year.
He said although Xiaomi has a strong online business in the Malaysian market, offline sales still constitute the majority of sales here.
'For premium models especially, most consumers need to experience (the product). This is why we have a retail outlet at TRX, and this outlet has the most SKUs here. Consumers can experience all products in one space.'
It plans to grow its physical presence in Malaysia to 85 outlets by year-end, from 77 outlets currently. It also wants to increase its smartphone market share in the country, from 18% in the first quarter of 2025.
'We hope to improve our average selling price, invest more in retail outlets and sell more premium models,' said Huang.
Redefining tech retail
Xiaomi's new retail outlet at The Exchange TRX is its second retail outlet in Malaysia and the biggest retail outlet under its new retail business model in Southeast Asia.
Following the success of its first new retail outlet at IPC Shopping Centre, this latest addition sees Xiaomi delivering a premium and hands-on retail experience.
With over 250 displayed stock keeping units (SKUs) and more than 500 SKUs of Xiaomi devices available for purchase, the 2,700 sq ft outlet offers the widest range of Xiaomi products in Malaysia, spanning smartphones, AIoT devices and smart home solutions.
This is also Xiaomi's first new retail outlet in Malaysia to offer on-site after-sales support, where customers can receive expert assistance directly from trained Xiaomi specialists.
The outlet showcases the brand's innovative range of products that aims to elevate smart living lifestyle. Conceptualising Xiaomi's upgraded strategy 'Human × Car × Home', this new outlet promises a refined retail experience where fans and shoppers alike can explore Xiaomi's smart ecosystem that seamlessly integrates personal devices and smart home products.
'After the success of the first new retail outlet at IPC Shopping Centre, we are providing an even more holistic retail experience to our customers with the opening of our second new retail outlet.
'This outlet reflects our mission to make the latest innovative technology accessible to everyone, and also enhancing customer experience through retail design and customer service. Malaysia is a key market that continues to inspire our growth,' said Huang.

The guide, co-published by Climate Governance Malaysia and Earth on Board, aims to provide corporate directors with insights to address the increasing complexity of climate-related legal risks, regulations, and governance requirements within the region. As Southeast Asia faces increasing vulnerability to both physical climate impacts and transition risks, such as evolving regulations and shifting market preferences and behaviours, it is critical for corporate boards to incorporate climate considerations into their decision-making processes. Home to over 685 million people (8.5% of the world's population), Southeast Asia is projected to account for 6.5% of CO2 emissions by 2040. The region faces threats of (and some areas have already witnessed) rising sea levels, increased heat waves, strengthened typhoons, extreme floods and droughts, and unprecedented weather events. In addition, Asia could lose 14.9% of its GDP by 2050, significantly affecting livelihoods, with Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand potentially losing seven times their total economic output without ambitious climate action. Conversely, achieving net-zero emissions by 2050 could boost the Asia-Pacific's GDP by 6.3% above projections and create up to 36.5 million additional jobs by the 2030s. In light of this, the need for corporate boards to take decisive climate action has never been more critical. Recent commitments by countries in the Southeast Asian region to achieve net-zero emissions and the growing integration of climate considerations into national policies reflect an urgent call for businesses to adapt swiftly. This guide provides corporate directors with a comprehensive framework for climate governance. It gives guidance on emerging legal risks, including litigation risk directors and corporations face regarding greenwashing and other climate-related liabilities, whilst outlining key regulatory and market shifts in Southeast Asia's net zero transition. Companies that do not adequately consider and manage foreseeable climate risks, and those that cause harm through carbon-intensive operations that exacerbate the climate crisis, are increasingly facing legal action. At the same time, to the extent that a corporation is found liable in a climate lawsuit, directors may also face personal liability for failing to act reasonably in steering the corporation to manage foreseeable climate risks. Drawing from off-the-record stakeholder interviews, the guide offers actionable steps, including: embedding sustainability across board-level committees, establishing dedicated governance structures, assessing climate risks and opportunities, setting science-based climate ambitions, and ensuring alignment throughout the company's value chain. With the growing adoption in Southeast Asia of international reporting standards like those from the Task Force on Climate-Related Financial Disclosures and the International Sustainability Standards Board, as well as the emergence of foreign regulations such as the EU's Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive and Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive, companies are urged to improve transparency and develop comprehensive decarbonisation transition plans to meet their net zero objectives. In response to these evolving reporting requirements and standards, corporate boards in Southeast Asia play a pivotal role in navigating corporations through the challenges of climate change. Earth on Board Founder and CEO Philippe Joubert said 'At Earth on Board we defend the idea that 2015, with the adoption of the SDGs and the Paris Agreement, must be seen as a pivotal year in the area of Boards' duties. 'The fact that the world recognised climate change as a reality and of human origin and has elaborated the main lines of a necessary evolution of the behaviour of economic agents toward all their stakeholders changes dramatically the way we should consider the duties of a board of directors, adding urgency to their actions and deepening the legal responsibilities of this body toward society. 'Duties of care and diligence and responsibility toward the way and the content of what is reported externally by the company are now subject to a different scrutiny by society, and it is urgent that boards understand that this will challenge the way they must fulfil these duties. This guide is a tool to help the boards navigate these fundamental matters.' Climate Governance Malaysia founder and chairperson Datin Seri Sunita Rajakumar said: 'The guide highlights how climate leadership goes beyond regulatory compliance, it requires boards to set bold climate ambitions, engage meaningfully with stakeholders, and integrate sustainability into core business strategies. KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP): Thai and Cambodian officials met in Malaysia on Monday for the first round of cross-border committee talks since a tense ceasefire was brokered last week after five days of deadly armed border clashes that killed dozens and displaced over 260,000 people. The four-day General Border Committee meetings were initially due to be hosted by Cambodia, but both sides later agreed to a neutral venue in Malaysia, the annual chair of the Association of South-East Asian Nations (Asean), which has mediated the halt in hostilities last month. The July 28 ceasefire followed economic pressure from US President Donald Trump, who had warned the two warring nations that the U.S. would not conclude trade deals with them if the fighting persisted. Washington lowered tariffs on goods from the two countries from 36% to 19% on Aug. 1 following the truce. Monday's talks focused on ironing out details to avoid further clashes. Discussions of the decades-long competing territorial claims over the pockets of land near the shared border are not on the agenda. Thailand and Cambodia have been feuding neighbours for centuries, since both were mighty empires. In modern times, a 1962 ruling by the International Court of Justice awarding Cambodia the land on which the ancient Preah Vihear temple stands marked a new low point in relations, and other border territory remained claimed by both countries. Fighting erupted in 2011 at Preah Vihaer, after which the International Court of Justice in 2013 reaffirmed its earlier ruling, rankling Thailand. Relations deteriorated again sharply in May this year, when a Cambodian soldier was shot dead in a brief fracas in one of the disputed border zones, setting off diplomatic and trade sanctions, one against the other. Soon after two incidents last month in which Thai soldiers were wounded by land mines in disputed territory, for which Thailand blamed Cambodia, the two sides downgraded diplomatic relations and fighting broke out, each side blaming the other for starting the armed clashes. The talks this week will include finalizing details and scope of reference for an Asean monitoring team, Malaysian Chief of Defense Forces Gen. Mohamad Nizam Jaffar said Monday. Despite some reports of attacks after the ceasefire came into effect, Nizam said such incidents were typical spillover violence and both sides showed strong commitment during Monday's talks to uphold the ceasefire. The main session of the General Border Committee on Thursday will be led by Thai Deputy Defense Minister Gen. Natthaphon Nakpanit and Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister cum Defense Minister Tea Seih and include observers from Malaysia, the United States and China, officials said. Despite the truce, tensions have persisted as both countries organised tours of the former battle areas for foreign diplomats and other observers to highlight damage allegedly caused by the other side. The two countries also continue to accuse each other of having violated international humanitarian laws with attacks on civilians and the use of illegal weapons. - AP

KUALA LUMPUR: MISC Bhd and Bumi Armada Bhd have mutually ended their proposed merger. The merger proposal, first announced in November 2024, was envisioned as an all-share transaction to combine the companies' floating production, storage and offloading (FPSO) fleets. The goal was to establish a Malaysian-based entity with the scale and resources to compete in the growing and capital-intensive offshore floating production segment. The non-binding memorandum of understanding will lapse on Aug 14, in accordance with its terms. In a filing with Bursa Malaysia, MISC said the proposed merger would not fully achieve the intended strategic objectives following evaluation and discussions. "The company will continue with its other growth plans," MISC added.
