Pitbull owner in Punjab arrested for allegedly using dogs to hunt protected porcupines

Principal Chief Conservator of Forests and Chief Wildlife Warden, Punjab, Dharminder Sharma said such wildlife act violations will not be tolerated. 'Strict action will be taken against the alleged accused in the future, as field officers have been given clear instructions in this regard,' he said. Porcupines, listed under Schedule IV of the Indian Wildlife Protection Act, 1972, are protected species, and hunting or killing them is a punishable offence. 'Porcupine is hunted rampantly for its meat and in addition, its bones and sharp quills are used for medicinal purposes, as they use their quills to protect themselves from predators,' Sharma said. He added, 'A complaint via e-mail along with a pen drive was received from Maneka Gandhi's office, showing the Instagram account of the accused in which he is allegedly seen using his dogs to hunt a porcupine.' 'In the past, dogs have also been used in rabbit races by people conducting illegal races,' Sharma added. A case has been registered under Sections 9, 39, and 51 of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972 (amended 2022) at Sadar Rajpura police station. The accused, Ajay Kumar, has been arrested for allegedly training and using Pitbulls to hunt wild animals, including porcupines. 'We apprehend that the accused got to know about the police raid and managed to shift his dogs to another safer location. We will try to trace the dogs and also question him. Besides, people who bought porcupine meat will be identified, and strict action as per law will be taken against them,' said a senior police official. Patiala Divisional Forest Officer (Wildlife), Guramanpreet Singh, said, 'The videos of the Pitbulls posted by the accused were later deleted by him. We are trying to find out if he has been involved in hunting more animals and if he has been supplying the meat and other animal parts to others.' 'As soon as the e-mail was received, our team got into action and the alleged accused Kumar was identified. Police were then approached to arrest him,' Singh added.

Fact Check: Bhim Army supporters' heads shaved, paraded by cops? This is from Rajasthan, not UP

Violence erupted in Uttar Pradesh's Prayagraj on June 29 after police placed Nagina MP Chandra Shekhar Aazad under house arrest. Aazad was heading to meet the families of victims in two different cases in Kaushami and Karchana when he was stopped by the police. At least 85 people have been arrested for allegedly damaging three police vehicles and other public property in Prayagraj. advertisementNow, a video allegedly showing the Prayagraj police punishing those who led the violence has gone viral. The clip shows policemen parading a group of men whose heads had been the video on X, one person wrote, 'Look what Baba's Police have done with the blue hooligans who went on a rampage after getting instigated to take law and order in their own hand in Uttar Pradesh's Prayagraj. Where is the Kingpin?' India Today Fact Check, however, found that this video is from June 2, when police officers paraded culprits accused of planning to loot a petrol pump in Baran, Rajasthan. It has nothing to do with the Prayagraj ProbeWe noticed the watermark of an Instagram account, '@virendrasingh6513', in the viral video. We found that this account had posted a longer version of the clip on June 2. The caption of the post stated that the Baran police arrested 12 people for allegedly planning to loot a petrol pump. Baran is a district in Rajasthan. advertisement View this post on Instagram A post shared by Virendra Singh (@virendrasingh6513)We then found multiple news reports about this incident. According to an NDTV report, 12 people were arrested in Baran for planning to loot petrol pumps in areas under the jurisdiction of two different police stations. The police shaved off the heads of the alleged culprits, who could be seen apologising with folded hands, and parading the night of May 31, Kishanganj SHO Vinod Kumar's team arrested five people, namely Itihas Ali, Ashiq, Mohammed Khalid, Shahrukh, and Raju Nayak, for planning the loot. Seven other members of the group — Deepak Nayak, Lekhraj Yadav, Rohit Yadav, Sonu Yadav, Shailendra Mali, Lalit Yogi, and Deepak Nagar — were arrested in Anta city of the arrests, police also seized pistols, live cartridges, a knife, and an iron rod, among other things. On June 2, the police shaved the heads of all the accused in the case and paraded them on the up culprits, also from RajasthanAnother video making the rounds on social media allegedly showed Bhim Army activists arrested, walking with bandages on their heads and arms. Those sharing the clip claimed they were roughed up by the Prayagraj police for the June 29 violence. This video, however, is from June 4 and shows a gang that used to extort money from businessmen in the name of gangster Goldy Brar in Sri Ganganagar, is, thus, clear that two old videos from Rajasthan were falsely shared in connection with the Prayagraj violence.- EndsTrending Reel Want to send us something for verification? Relationship end not reason to allege rape: Kerala High Court warns of law misuse

The Kerala High Court, while granting anticipatory bail to a man accused of rape, observed that a failed relationship cannot be grounds for such court was hearing the anticipatory bail of a 27-year-old man booked under Section 64(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (punishment for rape) for allegedly raping a married woman. The third-year medical student, as reported by Bar and Bench, filed a complaint five months later, stating that the accused raped her in a hotel near Thamarassery in Kozhikode district on November 3 and 4, petitioner sought anticipatory bail in a rape case, claiming the complaint stemmed from a consensual relationship that soured over time. On examining the woman's statements, the court found that she had voluntarily travelled from Thiruvananthapuram to Kozhikode and stayed with the petitioner in different lodges for two nights. It also noted that she had maintained regular contact with him on Instagram and High Court concluded that there was no prima facie case of rape. 'It cannot be assumed that the physical relationship was without her consent. Merely because a consensual relationship turned sour at a later point of time, it cannot be a reason to allege rape,' said Justice Bechu Kurian Thomas. 'Further, there cannot be a case of deceitfully obtaining consent under a false promise of marriage as the de facto complainant is still in a subsisting marriage.'advertisementJustice Thomas added that arrest and remand should not become tools of punishment when a romantic relationship turns sour.'Courts must be cautious when two young people enter into a willing physical relationship and later rape is attributed to their union. Refusing bail blindly in such cases, without considering the circumstances, can lead to injustice and destroy the young personality,' the judge added, while granting High Court underlined that legal protection must be preserved against false or exaggerated charges:'When a married lady, on her own volition willingly stayed with the petitioner in different lodges... it cannot be assumed that the physical relationship between them was without her consent.'Finding no need for custodial interrogation, the Court granted anticipatory bail with conditions: the petitioner must appear before the Investigating Officer, refrain from contacting the complainant, and avoid tampering with evidence.- Ends
