2026 Mercedes-Benz CLA Gets the Svelte Shooting Brake Treatment
The CLA Shooting Brake pairs extra cargo space with a panoramic glass roof with illuminated star design elements.
The CLA Shooting Brake will go on sale in Europe next spring, but it won't be sold on our side of the pond.
The third-generation Mercedes-Benz CLA-class arrives this fall as an electric compact sedan, with a hybrid variant joining the lineup early next year. Now, the CLA is spawning the German automaker's first electric station wagon, with the newly revealed CLA Shooting Brake pairing the electric powertrain with a swoopy longroof body.
Ahead of the B-pillar, the CLA Shooting Brake shares its sheetmetal with the sedan. Its wide grille and unusual headlights are linked by a light bar. Unlike the sedan, however, the roofline doesn't drop as dramatically, although it does still curve downwards more than a traditional wagon with a descending window line that gives it a sleek, aerodynamic appearance. A small rear spoiler juts out over the rear window and the full-width taillight.

The CLA Shooting Brake also sports a large panoramic glass roof, which incorporates heat-insulating laminated glass to help reduce the impact of the summer sun on the cabin and minimize heat loss during the winter. As an option, the glass roof can also transform from transparent to opaque at the push of a button. It even includes built-in ambient lighting, a first for Mercedes. The glass features 158 stars that can glow in an array of colors, with the light fed from the front of the panel by LED modules.
Mercedes says the longer roof gives rear passengers an extra inch or so of headroom and also provides extra storage space, offering 46 cubic feet of space with the rear seats folded flat. The frunk adds an additional 4 cubes of cargo room, and the CLA Shooting Brake comes standard with roof rails in case you need to carry even more stuff.
Mercedes-Benz
Like the sedan, the Shooting Brake will be initially offered as an EV. The rear-wheel-drive CLA250+ makes 268 horsepower and has a 473-mile range, per Europe's optimistic WLTP cycle, which translates to a roughly 400-mile range by EPA test standards. The dual-motor CLA350 adds all-wheel drive and ups the output to 349 horsepower, while range drops slightly to around 386 miles.
All CLA EVs have a two-speed gearbox on the rear axle, with first gear aiding acceleration and second gear providing adequate power at higher speeds. The CLA250+ Shooting Brake can go from zero to 62 mph in 6.8 seconds, Mercedes claims. Both models feature an 85-kWh battery and an 800-volt architecture that allows fast-charging at up to 320 kilowatts. Mercedes says more EV variants will join the lineup next year, as will a hybrid powertrain as seen on the sedan.
The Mercedes-Benz CLA Shooting Brake is set to go on sale in Europe in March 2026. Sadly, Mercedes confirmed to Car and Driver that the CLA will be sold exclusively as a sedan in the United States, so we will have to admire it from afar.

Development of the new race car began in January 2024, with production set to start this fall ahead of a 2026 season debut. In road form, a Porsche flat-six screaming at 9000 rpm is an auditory experience akin to several shots of espresso. In race car form, a single Porsche flat-six reaching an 8750-rpm crescendo generates a reverberation that can be felt pounding throughout your chest. But what about an entire field of Porsche flat-sixes? That sows a thunder felt from head to toe. That tempest of 911 Cup cars is preparing for a change, as Porsche just confirmed that development for an updated 911 Cup Car based on the 992.2 generation of the 911 GT3 road car is underway. Billion-euro chip factory planned for eastern Germany
A new factory is planned near the eastern German city of Magdeburg for the production of microchips for European industry. The aim of the project is to build up European production capacities and reduce dependence on foreign countries, according to Germany's Ferroelectric Memory Company (FMC). "We want to strengthen European technological sovereignty and resilience in system-critical memory chips," said Managing Director Thomas Rückes on Friday. The next step is to sign a letter of intent with the state of Saxony-Anhalt. Saxony-Anhalt's Minister for Economic Affairs Sven Schulze told dpa that the project is worth around €1 billion ($1.6 billion). US chip manufacturer Intel announced last year that it was putting its plan to build a major chip factory in Magdeburg on hold. However Schulze said that "Intel is not off the table," and that other companies are expected to settle in a large high-tech park planned near Magdeburg. While Intel has purchased an area of 400 hectares, the FMC project covers around 100 hectares. Together with the company, talks are now planned with the federal government and the EU for possible financing. Ferroelectric Memory Company was founded in 2016 and emerged from the Technical University of Dresden. The company says it has developed memory cells that consume extremely little power, thereby reducing the energy requirements of AI data centres. FMC is backed by Bosch, Air Liquide, Merck and other international investors. Why Lucid Stock Dropped, Then Recovered Friday
Key Points Investors may be rethinking the deal that brought monster gains for Lucid yesterday. Uber plans to deploy at least 20,000 Lucid EVs over the next six years. An influx of cash from Uber is good news for Lucid shareholders. 10 stocks we like better than Lucid Group › Lucid Group (NASDAQ: LCID) stock had its largest intraday gain ever yesterday. Shares of the luxury electric vehicle (EV) maker gained as much as 45% before closing about 36% higher in Thursday trading. But investors are rethinking that move today. Lucid stock sank as much as 8% this morning as investors digested two huge bits of news from yesterday. As of 11:50 a.m. ET, shares have recovered from that drop and remain near breakeven for the day. Big news for Lucid, or just a head fake? Lucid joined ride-sharing leader Uber Technologies and self-driving technology company Nuro in announcing a new partnership yesterday. The companies plan to deploy at least 20,000 Lucid electric vehicles (EVs) beginning next year for a premium robotaxi program exclusively for Uber's leading ride-hailing platform. On the surface, that sounds like a massive win for Lucid. The company produced only about 9,000 vehicles last year and expects a total of about 20,000 this year. So it would represent a welcome backlog to Lucid's order book at a time when it needs to grow volume. The total EV deployment is expected to be spread over six years, however. The deal includes a $300 million investment by Uber that will help deepen the relationship for autonomous luxury EVs on the Uber platform. The Lucid Gravity SUV enabled with Nuro's Level 4 self-driving system provides a 450-mile range on a full battery charge. That should help reduce expenses in Uber's vehicle fleet. Lucid is still high risk Along with the new partnership, Lucid also announced it plans to implement a 1-for-10 reverse stock split. A reverse stock split shows Lucid isn't coming from a position of strength. It still needs a broader customer base for its products. One good sign investors can look for is a boost in 2025 delivery guidance when it reports its second-quarter update on Aug. 5. Lucid stock may tread water until then.
