Forget the Typical Test Drive. This Mercedes-Benz Shopping Experience is Simply Epic
For many car buyers, its a thing of the past, especially for Mercedes-Benz shoppers.
That's because they've traded the dealership test drive for a weekend at a five-star hotel, a fleet of luxury cars to drive and a free-reign drive route followed by cocktails and dinner on the patio and an exclusive concert under the stars. And no salesman will call.
Isn't that a better way to test drive your next car?
This story is 100% human researched and written based on actual first-person knowledge, extensive experience and expertise on the subject of cars and trucks. Additionally, I was a guest of Mercedes-Benz for this experience.
You may know Auberge Resorts Collection as those iconic, idyllic properties that look Instagram-perfect, chic buildings accented by olive trees and glinting sunlight. Properties that invite you to come in and get lost, dip into the pool, be subdued by a massage, lounge on expensive sheets.
We sampled this type of test drive at the Commodore Perry Estate in Austin, Texas recently as Auberge and Mercedes hosted hotel guests and their own current and future customers for a weekend of elegant dining and an exclusive performance by Maren Morris.
Needless to say, it was an amazing time. We test drove the G-Wagen, toured a guest room, had a lovely dinner and danced along to 'My Church' (though we didn't stay for night, sadly).

On event weekends—Mercedes and Auberge hosted three in 2024—the team rolls in with a true fleet of cars: Maybachs, G-Wagens, SUVs and sedans. You could spend all day driving the test cars. But there's more to do: you also have to see the Manufaktur Atelier.

Not every Mercedes-Benz buyer indulges in Manufaktur, but many do, especially those who buy G-Wagens and AMG models. The more exclusive models with a higher price tag should come with a more bespoke look and feel, right? And that's the idea of Manufaktur: To pick your leathers, paint and trim details and really customize your new car.
At the Atelier, which Mercedes sets up on event weekends, specialists guide you through the leather choices, the stitching, the metals, woods paint colors and finishes. And so you can feel what that leather is really like, they send you off with a small gift: A card case or small folio made of the Manufaktur leather.

Part of our experience was a very intimate performance by Maren Morris, one of three Auberge Concert Series performances held in 2024; the other artists included Kate Hudson and LeAnn Rhimes.
At the Commander Perry Estate the concert was held in the property's chappell, a smallish hall with excellent acoustics that seats up to 129 people. Yes, 129. We lounged on stuffed sofas while servers brought us drinks.
Two tables away was an actress (who I won't name) from one of the most popular HBO series ever. THAT will make you feel like a VIP.
The good news is that test drives are available all year long, so if you miss an event weekend or can't get a room (they sell out fast!) you can still pop into an Auberge Resort for the weekend and test drive a number of models. Mercedes is the official car partner of Auberge Resorts so there's always one on hand for you to experience.
Test models at the Commander Perry Estate include this GLC SUV and a G 550 G-Wagen. If you'd really just rather ride along, the hotel staff is happy to ferry you to local restaurants and shopping in the Mercedes-Benz fleet.
The room I toured was set up for the Auberge Concert Series/Mercedes-Benz weekend, replete with a hand-written welcome note and a snack. Each room is unique at the Commander Perry Estate, where the theme is historic heritage, filled with textiles and decor that you might find in the grand estates of the Old South. Vintage or modern, the Auberge ethos is always the same: warm and gracious.
Auberge Resorts, like Mercedes-Benz, is known for personal touches, a high standard of excellence and refined sensibilities, and that completely comes through in all they do. You feel as if they know who you are, have anticipated your needs and are longing to see you smile. That must be what it's like to be a celebrity; the feeling is certainly very VIP.
And for good reason: No creepy salesmen, no pressure, no bad experiences. It was cold and rainy during our test drive and the environment is so lovely you just have to shrug it off. We simply turned on the heated seats and sunk a but further into the leather upholstery to shield ourselves from the weather.
But isn't that the idea of a privileged experience? To separate us from all that hurts or irks us, and preserve those good moments as memories. Such as a test drive you'll never forget.

Why Valtteri Bottas would be the perfect fit for Alpine
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. According to reports, Alpine reached out to Mercedes' reserve driver, Valtteri Bottas, about his availability. Bottas played a key role in Mercedes winning several Constructors' titles. He is well-travelled around the grid, racing for Sauber in a three-season stint. As Audi is taking over, Sauber made the move to replace Bottas with the German veteran driver Nico Hulkenberg. Bottas decided to stay in the sport and join Mercedes again. With a new set of regulations coming in the upcoming season, he is eyeing a seat for the new cars. Valtteri Bottas of Finland and Mercedes poses for a photo on the grid during the F1 Grand Prix of Emilia-Romagna at Autodromo Internazionale Enzo e Dino Ferrari on May 18, 2025 in Imola, Italy. Valtteri Bottas of Finland and Mercedes poses for a photo on the grid during the F1 Grand Prix of Emilia-Romagna at Autodromo Internazionale Enzo e Dino Ferrari on May 18, 2025 in Imola, Italy. Photo byIn an early June interview, Bottas revealed talks between Alpine and his team. "I think probably there has been some discussions," Bottas explained on F1's "Beyond the Grid." "I haven't really been involved, but I do have a management team who are always in the background seeing what is out there. They do have a Mercedes power unit for the future, which I think is a good call. "They're on their second driver this year and I think the next races will show how that goes. Again, I think on a struggle street, let's say, experience can always help. "But there's lots of politics in this sport. I don't have tens of millions to pay for a seat. Depends on the team but I do have some personal partners that could potentially join me, but still, not to an extent to some others. Let's wait and see a few races and see how things go. You never know if something opens up." Bottas offers a steady, experienced pair of hands behind the wheel. He is familiar with the Mercedes power unit and knows how to get familiar with a new engine formula. Mercedes is reportedly willing to help Bottas make the move to Alpine happen, especially since there is a new partnership between his current team and the French organization. Alpine's current driver situation alongside Pierre Gasly remains muddled, leaving the door open for Bottas. Do we like this seat? — Valtteri Bottas (@ValtteriBottas) June 23, 2025 Gasly is, without a doubt, the team's lead driver whom they are building around for the future. He is a consistent driver who delivers results and pushes any car he drives further up the grid. Colapinto came over from Williams during the offseason as the reserve driver for a big fee. Despite the expense, Alpine featured Jack Doohan in the second seat of the team, opting to reward a driver from the French team's academy. After not impressing in the leadership, Doohan was given the axe by Alpine in the first half of the season. They promoted Colapinto to the second seat, but through five races, he still hasn't scored a point yet. Alpine's car isn't one of the best on the grid - Gasly has only finished in the points once during Colapinto's scoreless streak. They are still backing Colapinto for the rest of the season. He is continuing to drive for the team on a race-by-race basis. While not the flashiest option, Bottas can help get Alpine back into the midfield amid its run of poor results. He will give specific feedback on car development and knows what teams need in order to win. For more F1 news, head on over to Newsweek Sports.

Max Verstappen Drops Five-Word Hint on Rumored Mercedes Move
Max Verstappen Drops Five-Word Hint on Rumored Mercedes Move originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Max Verstappen has sent Formula 1's rumor mill into overdrive with a simple but loaded five-word declaration: 'I determine my own future.' Advertisement The Red Bull star dropped the line when pressed about speculation that he could leave the team for Mercedes. Refusing to either confirm or deny talks, Verstappen left just enough ambiguity to keep fans and paddock insiders guessing. Verstappen was asked directly by Viaplay if he'd consider a shock switch to Mercedes, with his future the hottest topic in F1 right now. The four-time world champion chose his words carefully, saying, 'I do not have to add much to that. The more I say about it, the more it will be reported in the media. And I certainly do not want that.' But within that measured response, Verstappen slipped in a line that could resonate far beyond this weekend: 'I determine my own future.' Rumors of Verstappen jumping ship first erupted last year after Lewis Hamilton's blockbuster move to Ferrari was confirmed. Mercedes boss Toto Wolff made it clear he'd love to sign the Dutchman to lead the Silver Arrows into F1's new era starting in 2026, when new chassis and engine regulation changes will shake up the grid. Advertisement George Russell reignited the chatter ahead of the Canadian Grand Prix by telling Sky Sports F1 there are 'ongoing' conversations happening between Verstappen and Mercedes. Wolff didn't exactly pour cold water on the idea either, setting a deadline of the summer break to finalize his 2026 driver lineup. Max Verstappen talks to media during qualifying in remains under contract at Red Bull through the end of 2028, a deal he signed during the team's period of crushing dominance. However, it's widely known there's a performance clause tied to that contract. Should Verstappen find himself outside the top four in the Drivers' Championship standings after the Hungarian Grand Prix which would be the final race before the summer break — it's believed that he could activate an exit option. That scenario still looks unlikely, but with Red Bull facing tough challenges this season from McLaren and Ferrari, the once-unthinkable doesn't feel quite so distant. Verstappen's calm insistence that he alone holds the keys to his career keeps every possibility alive. Advertisement Whether it's gamesmanship, leverage over Red Bull, or a genuine openness to change, Verstappen's latest comments ensure the spotlight and the intrigue will follow him all the way to the summer showdown in Budapest.
