ISRO shares full account of astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla's Axiom-4 space mission

BENGALURU: As the whole nation celebrates the splashdown of Group Captain and astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla on July 15 at 3:02 pm at Pacific Ocean, off California coast as part of the Axiom-4 space mission, India's Gaganyatri has been sent to medical quarantine for seven days for his physical, mental and psychological well-being. In the meantime, ISRO, which had sent Shukla on the mission and invested Rs 550 crore on it, said that the safety and health of its astronaut was its top most priority. The ISRO team also shared a detailed account of the works Shukla had undertaken during his 21-day long space mission, of which 18 days were spent on the International Space Station. ISRO stated that Shukla had adapted exceptionally well to the zero-gravity environment in space. Despite the physical and psychological challenges of spaceflight, he maintained optimal health throughout the mission. He also captured and shared a wide array of photographs and videos documenting his life and works during the low Earth orbit mission. ISRO-led scientific experiments completed Shukla completed a suite of seven microgravity experiments developed by Indian research institutions under the Human Space Flight Centre's (HSFC) coordination. These experiments explored muscle regeneration, algal growth, crop viability, microbial survivability, cognitive performance in space, and the behaviour of cyanobacteria - each aimed at enhancing understanding of human spaceflight and microgravity science. The experiments included- Space Microalgae (developed by ICGEB and BRIC-NIPGR, New Delhi): It assessed the growth and radiation response of edible algae; Myogenesis (developed by BRIC-InStem, Bengaluru): Under this the muscle regeneration with supplement treatment were studied; sprouting of methi and moong seeds in microgravity (developed by UAS & IIT Dharwad); life, resilience and aging pattern of tardigrade (designed by IISc, Bengaluru); cognitive testing with in-flight user interface displays of electronic displays (also designed by IISc, Bengaluru); comparative growth and proteomics of Cyanobacteria in Microgravity (developed by ICGEB, New Delhi); and Impact of microgravity on seed physiology on food crop seeds (developed by IIST and KAU, Thiruvananthapuram).

IIT-Kharagpur director Suman Chakraborty on Tuesday said the institution was pushing boundaries in the areas of artificial intelligence, cyber security and cloud computing, and it has become a national leader in AI's responsible real-world applications in health care and climate. Speaking during the institute's 71st convocation, Chakraborty said their AI department has started offering BTech, MTech and interdisciplinary dual degree courses. 'Our research spans from virtual accident monitoring to waste water engineering to next-generation wireless communication. We have become a national leader in responsible and explainable AI in real-world applications in health care and climate with an emphasis on human-centric AI,' he said. 'We have taken decisive steps to enhance national defence capabilities through the DRDO Industry Academia Centres of Excellence (DIA-CoEs), IIT Kharagpur, focusing on underwater robotics and cyber physical defence systems. Our healthcare technologies are reaching rural India, AI models are being used for disaster response and precision agriculture,' he added. Tata Steel MD TV Narendran, who is also board of governors chairman at IIT-Kharagpur, said, 'India is on the rise to become a global leader in technology and manufacturing . Our stories are deeply intertwined with that of India's progress. IIT-Kharagpur is keeping pace with change and helping the future.' Forest Department and IISc sign MoU to advance science-based conservation

In order to advance science-based conservation of the Asian elephant (elephas maximus), the Karnataka Forest Department and the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) on Tuesday signed a MoU to implement a five-year collaborative project titled 'Landscape-Level Management of the Asian Elephant in the Mysore Elephant Reserve'. The collaboration aims to generate a robust scientific foundation for mitigating human-elephant conflict and ensuring long-term conservation of the Asian elephants across Karnataka's ecologically sensitive and conflict-prone regions. Integrated technology The project will integrate technologies such as satellite telemetry, camera traps, acoustic sensors, and agent-based models to inform targeted interventions and improve coexistence outcomes. The project will address six core objectives — strengthening habitat connectivity: mapping elephant corridors and evaluating barriers to movement using satellite telemetry, camera traps, and GIS models; monitoring demographic and physiological health: assessing population dynamics, body condition, and stress indicators through non-invasive sampling (e.g. dung hormone assays); understanding behaviour and conflict propensity: studying crop-raiding patterns, social learning, and identifying high-conflict individuals through social network analysis; elephant communication and acoustic monitoring: cataloguing elephant vocalisations, particularly in conflict contexts, to develop sound-based deterrents and warning systems; predictive modelling of conflict hotspots: integrating ecological and behavioural data to forecast future HEC zones under various land-use scenarios, and developing a 10-year Strategic management plan: creating a conflict mitigation toolbox (CMT) and strategic action plan (SAP) that informs policy and practice. ₹4.74 crore project The project will be executed between 2025–2029 and the total financial outlay is ₹4.74 crore, which will be funded by the Forest Department. Besides there would be biannual review meetings, annual reports, and a real-time data dashboard and the field sites will be spread across over 15 forest divisions and protected areas in southern Karnataka. 'Modern technology will be used to protect elephant corridors and habitats in order to control the increasing elephant-human conflict in the State and protect the crops of farmers on the edge of the forest areas,' said Environment Minister Eshwar Khandre. He further said that elephant-human conflict is common in Hassan and Kodagu, causing loss of life and crop damage, and the department is taking all possible steps to control it.
