For years, health experts have warned that both too little and too much sleep could negatively affect well-being. But new research suggests the problem might not be sleep quantity alone, but how consistently and accurately people sleep.
A massive seven-year study, published in Health Data Science on June 3, 2025, tracked nearly 90,000 adults using wearable fitness trackers. The findings show that irregular sleep patterns—not just total sleep time—are strongly linked to an increased risk of 172 diseases, including Parkinson's, kidney failure, and Type 2 diabetes. Many health threats may begin silently, with poor sleep at the root.
Irregular sleep is more harmful than you think
The study revealed that many individuals who believed they were getting eight or more hours of sleep were actually sleeping much less—sometimes under six hours a night.
These 'false long sleepers' skewed earlier research that relied heavily on self-reporting. When researchers compared objective data with self-reports, the supposed dangers of sleeping 'too much' mostly disappeared, pointing instead to irregular and inconsistent sleep as the real culprit behind rising health risks.
Disrupted rhythms in sleep linked to chronic conditions
Researchers used UK Biobank data and accelerometers to study sleep quality, duration, fragmentation, and timing. Led by Dr. Qing Chen from China's Third Military Medical University, the team found that irregular and fragmented sleep patterns were linked to a broad array of diseases—172 in total. These included:
37% higher risk of Parkinson's disease
36% higher risk of Type 2 diabetes
22% higher risk of acute kidney failure
Sleep disruption also tripled the risk of frailty in older adults and doubled the risk of developing gangrene.
Over 20% of disease cases could be preventable
One of the most striking findings was that optimal, consistent sleep could potentially prevent more than 20% of cases for 92 different diseases. These included not only well-known conditions like heart disease and stroke, but also lesser-known associations such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and liver disorders.
Sleep timing and regularity matter more than just hours
While the traditional advice of sleeping 7–9 hours a night remains useful, this study emphasized that when you sleep and how consistent your schedule is may be even more important.
People with erratic sleep times and inconsistent routines experienced significantly worse health outcomes—even if they logged enough total sleep hours.
The researchers also identified biological markers that could explain the disease connection. Elevated levels of white blood cells and C-reactive protein were seen in participants with disrupted sleep—suggesting that chronic inflammation may be a major mechanism by which poor sleep contributes to disease.
A wake-up call for healthier sleep habits
Although the study is the largest of its kind, it was limited by a one-week data window and a predominantly White, healthy participant base. Yet even with these constraints, the findings held true across US-based NHANES data.
The message is clear: irregular sleep can be dangerous, even if you think you're getting enough rest. Maintaining a stable sleep schedule may be a powerful, underappreciated way to protect your long-term health.

New Delhi, Aug 2 (UNI) A promising breakthrough by researchers at UBC Okanagan may soon enable easier identification of prediabetes ie individuals at risk of Type 2 diabetes, even before symptoms manifest. The study published recently in 'Applied Physiology, Nutrition, and Metabolism' highlights the potential of measuring insulin levels in saliva as a simple, non-invasive alternative to traditional blood tests, eliminating the need for needles or lab-based blood work. Dr. Jonathan Little, Professor at UBC Okanagan's School of Health and Exercise Sciences, noted that this 'spit test' could also detect early metabolic changes associated with obesity and other health risks. The research involved 94 healthy participants with varying body sizes. After fasting, each participant consumed a standardized meal-replacement shake, followed by saliva collection and a finger-prick blood glucose test. 'Individuals with obesity exhibited significantly higher saliva insulin levels compared to those who were overweight or had lower body weight, despite similar blood sugar levels,' said Dr. Little. He emphasised that saliva testing could serve as a convenient and non-invasive tool to identify people at risk of Type 2 diabetes well before symptoms appear. Type 2 diabetes currently affects around 400 million people worldwide and is conventionally diagnosed through elevated blood glucose levels. However, Dr. Little pointed out that prediabetic conditions like insulin resistance and hyperinsulinemia can develop 10 to 20 years prior to diagnosis. Early detection of hyperinsulinemia could allow timely lifestyle interventions and treatments, potentially delaying or preventing the onset of diabetes. The study's co-author, Dr. Hossein Rafiei, explained that the team aimed to develop a practical test for hyperinsulinemia using saliva. Interestingly, saliva insulin levels closely mirrored plasma insulin responses following mixed meals of varying carbohydrate content, as shown in Dr. Rafiei's earlier research at UBC Okanagan. Participants' saliva samples were collected at 30, 60, and 90 minutes after ingesting the meal-replacement shake. Notably, some individuals with lower body weight experienced significant spikes in saliva insulin post-consumption, suggesting that they might be at increased risk for Type 2 diabetes despite normal glucose levels and lean physiques. Dr. Rafiei remarked, 'The discovery that some lean individuals have high insulin levels is intriguing. This suggests saliva insulin measurement could be more informative than conventional metrics like weight or waist size.' The study also examined correlations between waist circumference, BMI, age, and sex, finding waist size to be the strongest predictor of saliva insulin levels. The researchers concluded that waist circumference may be a more reliable indicator of hyperinsulinemia than age or overall body weight when using saliva insulin tests. 'Our findings imply that saliva insulin testing might surpass blood glucose measurements in distinguishing metabolically healthy individuals from those prone to hyperinsulinemia,' said Dr. Rafiei. The study findings are significant in the context of India where prediabetes is a significant health concern, with an estimated 15.3% of the population affected. "About 30% of influenza and pneumonia patients here have Covid history. In many of these cases, we are observing increased disease severity, particularly among those who had moderate to severe Covid," he said. Lower resistance induced by Covid and comorbidities could also be a reason in the case of elderly patients. But most severe Covid patients have no trace of lung damage or else this outbreak would have been far worse," said Manipal infectious diseases physician Sayan Chakrabarty. MS Purkait, medical superintendent, Techno India DAMA Hospital said, "If those with prior history of Covid, especially the elderly, develop influenza or pneumonia within a year of Covid, the symptoms are more serious and may require hospitalization.
