Singer Onew's Malaysian fans furious after organisers vanish with concert refunds

Malaysian fans of a South Korean singer, whose fan meeting in Kuala Lumpur was cancelled, are demanding refunds from the organisers, who they claim have disappeared.
A group, headed by a woman known as Saza, announced that the event featuring singer Onew of the boy group Shinee, titled the 'Guess Onew Fanmeeting 2024', was initially scheduled for July 27. However, the venue was altered before the event was ultimately cancelled.
Fans who bought tickets through an online portal were informed that the refund had been returned to the event organisers.
'We were told that the refund process would begin in August and be fully completed by December. However, we have yet to get any refunds at all.
'In the meantime, the event organiser has continued to conduct events, with at least three we know of since the cancellation of this one,' Saza, who also works as a lawyer, said.
MCA Public Services and Complaints Department head Michael Chong, who organised the press conference for the group, stated that several members had taken the issue to the Tribunal for Consumer Claims and had received a decision allowing them to pursue their refunds.
He added that the group had collectively lost around 20,000 ringgit (US$4,704) from the unfulfilled tickets.

Hong Kong student warned AI porn case is ‘not closed' despite formal apology

A law student at the University of Hong Kong (HKU) has expressed 'deep remorse' for using artificial intelligence (AI) tools to create pornographic images of female classmates and has voluntarily withdrawn from an overseas academic exchange programme, according to the institution. In a statement issued on Thursday, its second within five days in response to the controversy, HKU stressed that the warning letter to the student and his formal apology were 'not a closure to the case'. 'The male student expressed deep remorse for his actions and has voluntarily withdrawn from a year-long overseas academic exchange programme in the upcoming school year,' the statement read. 'The university will cooperate with law enforcement agencies and will continue to further review the case, taking further action when appropriate.' The case first came to light in mid-February when a friend of the law student discovered pornographic images of multiple women on the student's personal laptop. Upon questioning, he admitted to generating the images using free online AI software, based on publicly available photos and screenshots sourced from social media.

Fear of ‘mafia-style syndicates' in Bali grows amid spike in crimes by foreigners

A surge in foreigner-linked crime has raised fears that Bali may turn into a 'killing ground' for drug traffickers and organised crime groups, as officials and residents warn that efforts to boost mass tourism are eroding public safety and inviting the wrong kind of visitors to the Indonesian island. Advertisement Bali police recorded a 16 per cent rise in crimes involving foreigners last year – from 194 cases in 2023 to 226 in 2024 – with 108 such incidents logged between January and June of this year, according to local news outlet The Bali Sun. Local politician Agung Bagus Pratiksa Linggih attributed the issue to an influx of low-budget travellers staying long-term in unlicensed accommodations that have proliferated since the Covid-19 pandemic. 'The quality of tourists coming to Bali is decreasing,' Agung said as quoted by The Guardian. 'This is due to the rapid growth of illegal homestays, which allows low-budget foreigners to stay longer in Bali.' Last year, Indonesia's most visited island welcomed over 6.3 million foreign tourists, and the provincial government hopes to surpass that figure by attracting 6.5 million this year.
