Congress vision rooted in Rahul Gandhi's principle, says CM Siddaramaiah
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Tuesday said the Congress party's vision was anchored in Rahul Gandhi's principle that a community's rights must be proportionate to its population.
Society must strengthen the voices led by Gandhi to ensure social justice and equity, he said, speaking at the AICC OBC Advisory Council meeting. 'Let us remind the country that Ahinda is not a vote bank. It is the voice of India's conscience,' he said, referring to the acronym that stands for minorities, OBCs and Dalits.
Ahinda, he added, was an empowerment model which is not only relevant, but is also essential. 'India can never be a true democracy unless the majority who come from OBC, SC, ST and minority communities, that is the AHINDA communities, are not only counted, but also heard.'
Karnataka model, Siddaramaiah said, was principled in its commitment to Social Justice and Equity. 'It is rooted in fraternity. It is based on data and scientific surveys. And it is now ready for a national-level adoption.' The CM said his government was committed to delivering justice after completion of the second socio, economic and educational survey that was underway.
The state Cabinet had, last month, decided to conduct a fresh state-wide socio-economic survey and complete it in 90 days as desired by the Congress leadership.'For the first time since 1931, we had data on caste and deprivation. But BJP did not make use of the data effectively for the welfare of the Backward Classes,' the CM said, speaking at the AICC OBC Advisory Council meeting in Bengaluru.Siddaramaiah attacked the BJP and Sangh Parivar saying they polarised India through caste division, while the Congress worked to win back through social unity and constitutional justice.

The Congress on Wednesday (July 16, 2025) slammed the BJP government in Uttarakhand for promoting VIP culture in the State after Chairman of Badri-Kedar temple Committee (BKTC) took a chopper to Kedarnath despite suspension of services due to bad weather. As per reports, BKTC Chairman Hemant Dwivedi, along with three other persons, took a chopper to Kedarnath on July 14. Heritage aviation had organised the chopper ride. After the matter was reported to officials, the Uttarakhand Civil Aviation Development Authority (UCADA) ordered an investigation. Sources in the department confirmed that the aviation firm was informed about the guidelines of the Director General Civil Aviation (DGCA), which has totally shut the shuttle services in the Kedar valley due to the weather conditions, while the chopper services of Char Dham are allowed but that too with the riders of weather being suitable for the flight. UCADA CEO Ashish Chauhan told The Hindu that a notice had been issued to the aviation firm. 'After around half a dozen chopper accidents took place in the State during the ongoing char dham yatra, the DGCA had issued instructions to Uttarakhand's authorised agency, UCADA, to impose a complete ban on air services during the rainy season. But BKTC president Hemant Dwivedi has not only flouted the rules by travelling to Kedarnath by helicopter, but once again openly supported the VIP culture,' said Congress spokesperson Garima Dasauni. She said when there was a complete ban on flights for the safety of common devotees, then how and why was this special exemption given to the BKTC president. 'This directly reflects the situation of 'one country, two rules' and is an example of disrespect for government rules,' she added.

Elaborate security arrangements in place for bandh today
Bhubaneswar: Police have made elaborate security arrangements across the state, especially in the twin cities of Bhubaneswar and Cuttack, in view of the 12-hour Odisha bandh called by Congress and seven other organisations on Thursday, seeking a fair probe into the self-immolation of a 20-year-old student in Balasore. Speaking to media persons, police commissioner S Dev Dutta Singh said, "We will not allow any kind of violence or untoward incident during the bandh. Political parties have the liberty to protest in a democracy, but our top priority remain the safety of the public." Commissionerate police plans to deploy AI-based surveillance drone cameras to monitor the movement of the protesters. Additional arrangements are also being made to guard key govt installations such as Lok Seva Bhawan, AG office, and offices and residences of key ministers and officials. Looking at the growing tensions and the protest by BJD on Wednesday in Bhubaneswar which turned violent, police are taking extra caution, sources said. The home department has issued an advisory for govt employees to reach their offices before 9:30am positively. On the day, visitors will not be allowed at Lok Seva Bhawan while checks of ID cards of the employees will be intensified, the advisory added. 2,000 fruit trees cut: Himachal Pradesh high court says continue to clear forest land
Shimla: The Himachal Pradesh high court on Wednesday reiterated that state govt authorities must ensure apple and other fruit trees planted on encroached forest land in the state were removed in equal terms. The division bench, comprising Justice Vivek Singh Thakur and Justice Bipin Chander Negi, was apprised by the state govt that officials of the forest and revenue departments, under the ongoing drive, had so far removed over 2,000 trees of apples and other fruits from encroached forest land mainly in three villages of Shimla district — Chaithla in Kotkhai tehsil and Sarahan village in Kumarsain tehsil. During the previous hearing on July 14, the court clarified that the order for the removal of apple trees from forest land was not limited to orchards where attempts were being made to reoccupy govt land. The court also directed the state govt on Wednesday to file a fresh status report on the next date of hearing about the strict compliance of the court orders for the removal of encroachment in a transparent manner. Minister Raises Concern Education minister Rohit Thakur, who is MLA from the apple-growing Jubbal-Kotkhai constituency, on Wednesday said it was a matter of serious concern and fruit-bearing trees should not have been cut during monsoon, which is when plantation drives are carried out. He added that though the eviction drive was being carried out on high court directions, he would take up the issue with chief minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, as it was not good to cut fruit trees when the crop was ready for harvest in just a few weeks. The minister added at least small farmers needed to be saved. In 2015-16, the then Congress govt took an initiative to come up with a policy to benefit farmers who owned less than five bighas of need-based encroachment by landless or small farmers, but the govt changed in 2017, said Thakur. Himachal Kisan Sabha and Himachal Seb Utpadak Sangh, led-by former MLA from Shimla and CPI(M) leader Rakesh Singha, have been urging the immediate intervention of the chief minister to stop the eviction proceedings. They have also given a call to gherao the Himachal Pradesh Secretariat in Shimla on July 29.
