Coronation Street launches search for new dog to join ITV soap - but there's a catch
Coronation Street has launched a nationwide casting search for a dog with their new competition Pup Idol.
But there's a catch, as the doggies keen to become the next big soap star must meet a list of requirements to be a contender. The ITV soap has decided to look for a new canine star to appear on the cobbles, and Strictly Come Dancing judge Shirley Ballas is leading the search through a campaign with This Morning.
The TV star called out to viewers in a recent episode of the ITV magazine show, where she reminded hopefuls that their pooch must be well-behaved and obedient to be within a chance of securing a role on the long-running soap. She said: "We'll be looking for the best little pup in Great Britain, so I'm very excited about that and would like to see that we have some obedience.
Continuing to rhyme off the list of requirements, she added: "Good behaviour - we're looking for something with [a] really good temperament. [The dog will also have to be] loving, kind, caring, well groomed and not easily distracted on TV sets, and maybe some good little tricks would be nice."
Shirley will be assisted in the search by veterinarian Dr Scott Miller and Jodie Prenger - who plays Rovers barmaid Glenda Shuttleworth - and the West End star referenced some of the furry friends of Weatherfield past. Jodie, who lives on a farm with her fiance Simon Motson and once helped Andrew Lloyd Webber look for a Toto to star in The Wizard of Oz, said: "From Schmeichel to David [and] Eccles, many paws have graced these famous cobbles and they've probably cocked their legs on a few lamp posts as well.
"Your furry friend could be joining that illustrious list. I am so excited to be part of the judging panel that will be putting the pups through their paces to see who will win the walk-on part in the nation's longest-running soap.
"So if you think your pooch should play the part, then what are you waiting for? And who knows, you could be watching your four-legged furry friend make their television debut," she told viewers live from the Corrie set.
Applications for the search can be found here, and fans must enter by July 25 to be in with a chance of getting their four-legged friend on screen. The lucky canine will be one of several pets who have featured on the programme throughout its 65-year history.
Some of the more recent canine residents of Weatherfield included Evelyn Plummer's greyhound Cerebus, and the Platt family dog David, whom David Platt (Jack P Shepherd) inherited from a salon client. Prior to that, Maria Connor ( Samia Longchambon) was gifted a Labrador by her husband Liam Connor shortly before he was killed in a hit-and-run accident.
Perhaps two of the more famous dogs to have resided on the cobbles include Chesney Battersby Brown's (Sam Aston) Great Dane Schmeichel, and Border Terrier Eccles, who lived with the Barlows at number one for several years. Other pets to have been included on the cobbles over the years included Yasmeen's pet chicken Charlotte Bronte, and rat Darryl, who arrived along with Craig Tinker (Colson Smith) shortly after his debut in 2011.
In the early days, original Street battle axe Ena Sharples (Violet Carson) received a budgie called Archie but passed it onto her friend Martha Longhurst (Lynne Carrol), and Vera Duckworth (Liz Dawn) took a cat called Cleo to the factory to catch the mice.
In the 1990s, Rovers landlady Natalie Barnes ( Denise Welch) had a cat called Tiger, and David Platt famously had a rabbit called Barney. Jack Duckworth (Bill Tarmey) was known for keeping pigeons, and his surrogate son Tyrone Dobbs ( Alan Halsall) found a stray one that he named after Beyonce.

Torode ‘didn't do anything' about offensive remark, says accuser
Aasmah Mir, a former Celebrity MasterChef contestant, claims that John Torode showed no emotion when his co-host Gregg Wallace made an offensive comment about a BBC colleague. Appearing on ITV 's Good Morning Britain on Thursday, Mir, who competed in 2017, suggested that Torode had become accustomed to Wallace's behaviour. She described Wallace's remark as "incredibly inappropriate" and said Torode 'didn't do anything'. Mir said that while the blame for the comment lay entirely with Wallace, she found Torode's complete lack of reaction odd. Watch the video in full above.

ITV This Morning's Cat Deeley 'could cry' as she makes learns biological age live on air
This Morning presenter Cat Deeley was left gobsmacked as she learned her biological age live on air, with the star admitting that she was 'close to tears' This Morning's Cat Deeley was left speechless after learning her biological age following an admission about her poor sleeping patterns. During Thursday's (July 17) instalment of the popular ITV daytime programme, Cat, 48, and presenting partner Ben Shephard, 50, returned to guide viewers through the day's headlines. Yet it was a particular segment that caught the duo completely off guard when they underwent a medical examination to determine their true biological ages. Accompanied by longevity and biohacking specialist Dr. Alka Patel, Cat enquired: "Tell us, what is biohacking?" Dr Alka elaborated: "Biohacking is all about taking control of your health. If you split the word up, what you're taking control of is your biology and the hacking is getting into your control centre, to really understand how you're made." Intrigued to learn more, Cat pressed further: "So what's the difference between your biological age and the other age.", reports the Mirror. Dr Alka disclosed: "This is super important to know is that getting older and ages are two different things and most people don't think of it like that. Your biological age is based on the level of your cells." Anxious to discover their actual ages, Dr Alka, 53, stepped forward first and disclosed that her biological age stands at just 20. An astonished Ben exclaimed: "What!" whilst Cat interjected: "How did you do that?". Dr Alka confessed: "I've been testing for a number of years and over the years that biological age hasn't shifted." Ben turned the spotlight on himself, revealing: "My chronological age, not sure I've told you this but I'm 50, so we're going to find out my biological age." The health-conscious TV presenter, who is known for his dedication to fitness and regular workouts, was somewhat disappointed to learn that his biological age came in at just 46 years old. Facing the camera, he exclaimed: "46, is that it? I'm quite surprised about that because I think I look after myself, I get a decent amount of sleep, train really hard and I feel fit and healthier than I ever have in my life. I'm really fascinated that it's only four years younger." When it was Cat's turn, she confessed that undergoing the test was a 'nightmare' since she had to do it twice. It was apparent that Cat was bracing herself for a higher age as she disclosed: "I'm a terrible sleeper but I am healthy." Cat, aged 48, was speechless upon discovering her biological age was a youthful 33 years old, making her biologically 15 years younger. An emotional Cat responded: "I could cry" while Ben interjected with a humorous: "33! I want a recount." Cat continued: "I don't know how I've done it because I certainly don't sleep, which I know is one of the most important factors."

ITV Coronation Street star issues 'nine year' exit message as fans fume over same thing
Coronation Street star Paula Lane has taken to social media to mark nine years since her character, Kylie Platt, was killed off in dramatic scenes on the ITV soap. Former Coronation Street star Paula Lane has marked nine years since her dramatic exit from the popular soap as Kylie Platt. The actress made her debut on the cobbles back in 2010. Introduced as Becky McDonald's half-sister on the ITV soap, she initially sold her son Max to Becky before battling to regain custody. Paula took maternity leave from her role as nail technician Kylie in 2014. This followed a storyline that saw her character spiralling out of control by abusing her son's ADHD medication and seeking drugs from her ex, Callum Logan. Her husband David threw her out, caring for Max and their daughter Lily as a single dad. However, Kylie returned to the street in 2015 and soon found herself at the heart of the soap's live episode. As ITV viewers will recall, she killed her ex Callum by striking him with a wrench when she discovered him assaulting her sister-in-law Sarah. Paula bid farewell to the ITV soap as she prepared to welcome her second child. This marked a bittersweet conclusion for Kylie, as reported by the Manchester Evening News. Kylie had just revealed her family's plans to relocate to Barbados at the time of her death, to join her sister Becky, following her murder of ex Callum. However, her anticipation about the move was disrupted when she spotted close pal Gemma Winter being attacked by teenager Clayton. Kylie rushed to assist Gemma but was shockingly knifed in the chest by Clayton, who escaped the scene, leaving David to hold his dying spouse in his embrace. Taking to Instagram on Wednesday, nearly a decade after the scenes were broadcast, Paula uploaded a behind-the-scenes photograph from filming her devastating departure, showing herself lying on the cobblestones, chuckling in the arms of fellow actor Jack P Shepherd, who portrays David. "9 years! My memory feed always goes crazy around this time," Paula captioned the image before mentioning Corrie and Jack, who then shared the post on his own Instagram. However, some Corrie viewers expressed disappointment that the milestone wasn't acknowledged on the show, with one fan complaining: "Why didn't David or Lily bring up the fact its also the 9th anniversary of Kylie especially whilst discussing/processing another violent attacker? #corrie @itvcorrie it is like @Corriepedia doesn't exist." Recently, Paula has been spotted featuring in Emmerdale. She became part of the cast of the ITV soap in 2024 last year as Ella Forster, who was evidently concealing something significant. It emerged that Ella possessed a troubled past at the age of 11, having caused her best pals death and was imprisoned for the offence. Following her release, Ella, previously called Ruth, spent years relocating but ultimately sought security in the Dales. She had secured employment and was developing romantic feelings for Dr Liam Cavanagh. As the reformed killer's world fell apart once more, Ella was implicated in drugging Liam's current fiancée, Chas Dingle. Despite her denials, her pleas of innocence fell on deaf ears, resulting in her leaving the village. However, Ella made a final comeback to clear her name, but nearly caused Liam's death during a heated encounter in the woods. Fortunately, Liam survived the incident and encouraged Ella to get professional assistance. Following this, Ella was arrested again, marking her departure from Emmerdale.
