Oldest Springbok Des van Jaarsveldt dies
Although he wore the green and gold in just one Test, as captain, no less, his impact on the game was profound.
In 1960, selected on the flank at the age of 31, he led South Africa to an 18-10 victory over Scotland at the Boet Erasmus Stadium in Port Elizabeth, scoring a try in the process. Remained involved in the game
Born in Rhodesia on 31 March 1929, Van Jaarsveldt attended Plumtree School, the same school as another Springbok forward Adrian Garvey.
Van Jaarsveldt was Springbok #354.
He represented Rhodesia from 1947 to 1962, racking up 62 appearances.
Van Jaarsveldt remained involved in the game through coaching and administration and was a cherished friend and supporter of the SA Rugby Legends Association (SARLA) throughout the years.
SARLA confirmed his passing on Monday on social media, adding: 'Thank you for the legacy, the leadership, and the love for rugby. Rest peacefully, Des.'
The new oldest living Springbok is now Frik du Preez at the age of 89 years and 235 days as at the time of publishing. Post your condolences below, by …

Kaizer Chiefs news: Sundowns decision pending, Nabi talks talent
Kaizer Chiefs remain in the dark over Mamelodi Sundowns striker Etoisa Ighodaro, who has one year left on his contract. 'At the moment Chiefs are waiting on Sundowns,' a source confirmed.' Ighodaro has one year remaining on his contract with Sundowns and only if they can release him first as a free agent or if they can buy him from the remaining months on his contract.' 'Kaizer Chiefs are interested in him and depending on what Sundowns' decision is then Chiefs would still sign him before the start of the season.' Competition is another roadblock for AmaKhosi with the 24-year-old forward reportedly weighing up his options, suggesting that a move to the Soweto giants is not set in stone if the Tshwane giants are willing to let him go. 'There's been a lot of talk about Ighodaro joining Chiefs, but the reports suggesting he has signed are inaccurate,' an insider revealed. 'He is still assessing his options both locally and abroad. Nothing has been concluded. Kaizer Chiefs will enter next season having underperformed in the previous two campaigns, failing to qualify for the MTN8 Cup on both occasions. The 2025/26 season will undoubtably be Nasreddine Nabi's defining test – endure a series of defeats and he could be out the door before Christmas. But it's not all doom and gloom for AmaKhosi, who have welcomed several stars, including Ethan Chislett and Flavio Silva. The gaffer mentioned how they handled the club's pre-season in Europe, saying, 'They need to fully jell with the group,' Nabi said. 'However, they are all adapting nicely, and they start to understand what I expect from them. Our objective was to sign new players that will bring us to a higher level compared to last season. 'We saw a lot of positives in our training matches against very strong Dutch opponents. The players have started to understand the way I want them to play, and they jell well as a strong unit.' 'We didn't only want quality opponents, we also wanted quantity. Parallel with this, we did some tough physical work at training, even doing double sessions on the day before a match… We even had two sessions the day after one of the friendlies, with the objective of getting the players mentally ready,' the Kaizer Chiefs boss concluded. Kaizer Chiefs news: Nabi, Ighodaro, Silva, Shinga
Kaizer Chiefs return home having won one of their five pre-season games in the Netherlands. Head coach Nasreddine Nabi gave his thoughts on how his new signing have fitted in, saying, 'They need to fully gel with the group,' Nabi said. Meanwhile, AmaKhosi remain persistent for Mamelodi Sundowns striker Etoisa Ighodaro, who has one-year left on his contract. 'At the moment Chiefs are waiting on Sundowns,' a source confirmed.' Ighodaro has one year remaining on his contract with Sundowns and only if they can release him first as a free agent or if they can buy him from the remaining months on his contract.' 'Kaizer Chiefs are interested in him and depending on what Sundowns' decision is then Chiefs would still sign him before the start of the season.' Although Nabi is pleased with his new signings, former Kaizer Chiefs defender Tsepo Masilela has been vocal about his displeasure with left-back Nkhanyiso Shinga in pre-season. 'To be honest, when I look at Shinga, interesting player, but defensively, there's been question marks, in my opinion,' he said. 'Even the second goal (conceded against Twente), there's a couple of times (even) in the previous games, he got beaten in one-v-one situations.' 'Your primary job as a defender is to win those duels, to be on top of the winger – that's how you gain confidence. Listen, he's comfortable on the ball, that we can't argue.' 'But again, him inverting most of the time, I found it that it was dragging (Makabi) Lilepo to receive the ball too deep, more like a left-back. I couldn't understand what's the idea of him inverting that much.' Let us know by leaving a comment below or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 0211.
