Oldest Springbok Des van Jaarsveldt dies
Although he wore the green and gold in just one Test, as captain, no less, his impact on the game was profound.
In 1960, selected on the flank at the age of 31, he led South Africa to an 18-10 victory over Scotland at the Boet Erasmus Stadium in Port Elizabeth, scoring a try in the process. Remained involved in the game
Born in Rhodesia on 31 March 1929, Van Jaarsveldt attended Plumtree School, the same school as another Springbok forward Adrian Garvey.
Van Jaarsveldt was Springbok #354.
He represented Rhodesia from 1947 to 1962, racking up 62 appearances.
Van Jaarsveldt remained involved in the game through coaching and administration and was a cherished friend and supporter of the SA Rugby Legends Association (SARLA) throughout the years.
SARLA confirmed his passing on Monday on social media, adding: 'Thank you for the legacy, the leadership, and the love for rugby. Rest peacefully, Des.'
The new oldest living Springbok is now Frik du Preez at the age of 89 years and 235 days as at the time of publishing. Post your condolences below, by …

Kaizer Chiefs transfer news: Bafana's new goalkeeper
The name of Renaldo Leaner has become rather popular with Kaizer Chiefs supporters since the end of last season. The 27-year-old goalkeeper from Elsies River, Cape Town, caught Kaizer Chiefs' attention after superb performances for Sekhukhune United and Bafana Bafana. According to reports, Amakhosi, who are expected to part ways with Fiacre Ntwari, are interested in Leaner but have not made formal enquiries yet. Leaner learned the ropes at the famed Cape Town Spurs academy, Ikamva, before moving to Maritzburg United and later to Sekhukhune United. Orlando Pirates signings impress teammates Kaizer Chiefs target Renaldo Leaner in action for Sekhukhune United in the Betway Premiership. Image: Goal In apparent preparation, the club known as Babina Noko has signed two goalkeepers: Toaster Nsabata from Zambia and Manuel Sapunga, the goalkeeper for Equatorial Guinea, formerly with Polokwane City. Latest talk: Orlando Pirates and Relebohile Mofokeng move 'The two reinforcements provide Babina Noko with squad depth in the goalkeeping department, making Leaner available for transfer,' FARPost reported. Additionally, FARPost further confirmed that Kaizer Chiefs are keen on Leaner but have yet to call or email Sekhukhune United. 'Amakhosi coach Nasreddine Nabi is known to admire Leaner, whose stellar performances towards the end of the 2024/25 season have garnered attention. Kaizer Chiefs player ratings: Who FIRED, who FLOPPED
Kaizer Chiefs suffered another pre-season defeat after going 3-2 to Asante Kotoko in a penalty shootout in the Toyota Cup. The pre-season match, played at the Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday afternoon, finished 0-0 after 90 minutes and penalties were needed to separate the two sides. Amakhosi were the better team overall but failed to take their chances. In the 82nd minute, captain Miguel Inacio missed a penalty after Mduduzi Shabalala was brought down in the penalty box. Who fired for Kaizer Chiefs? Thabo Cele 10/10 Cele orchestrated the midfield alongside Sibongiseni Mthethwa and was by far the best Amakhosi player on the field. He dictated the tempo of the game and allowed the team to play from the back, linking the defence and the midfield, thus forcing Asante Kotoko to starve for possession. Nkosingiphile Ngcobo 9/10 The young attacker has looked like a different player in the past few weeks. He was arguably Kaizer Chiefs' best player in the Netherlands and has now brought his form to South Africa. Ngcobo created space for himself in the midfield and often linked with Glody Lilepo and Mfundo Vilakazi. Flavio de Silva 8/10 The big striker impressed on Saturday after a difficult pre-season in the Netherlands. After failing to score in four matches, the 29-year-old striker has been heavily criticised, however, in front of Khosi fans, he created several chances and linked well with Lilepo and Ngcobo in the first half. Which Kaizer Chiefs players flopped? Miguel Inacio (4/10) The captain had a dreadful game on Saturday. Although he wasn't tested much, he missed two penalties. one during normal play and the other during the shootout. He made a few fouls and was often caught out of position. Lucky for him, the Asante attack was toothless. Wandile Duba (3/10) The young forward was introduced in the second half but failed to make an impact. He had a one-on-one situation but fired straight at the keeper. Duba has not looked lively for Kaizer Chiefs in a while and will likely start from the bench when the team plays their opening league game next month. Lions maul Sharks in dominant Currie Cup opener
The Lions scored seven tries to crush the Sharks 46-5 at Ellis Park, avenging last year's Currie Cup final defeat. Jarod Cairns crossed early to open the scoring before Rabz Maxwane finished off a slick move sparked by Angelo Davids' break. Nico Steyn chipped crossfield for Maxwane to gather and score, giving the Lions a well-earned 10-0 lead inside 20 minutes. The Sharks lacked cohesion and discipline, with winger Phiko Sobahle receiving a yellow card for a deliberate knockdown near halftime. That infringement gifted the Lions a penalty try and a numerical advantage just before the break at a buzzing Ellis Park. Maxwane made full use of the extra space to bag his second try, pushing the Lions into a commanding 24-0 lead. Sobahle prepared to return from the bin when Jean Smith was shown yellow, reducing the Sharks to 14 men again early on. Lions debutant Angelo Davids took immediate advantage, slicing through the broken defence for a well-taken try in front of the home fans. The Sharks struggled to exit their own half and made little headway against a physically dominant Lions pack and lively backline. While Sobahle finally crossed for a late consolation try, the game had long since drifted beyond the visitors' reach in Johannesburg. Rynhardt Jonker burst through the midfield to score before Layton Horn dotted down soon after to compound the Sharks' misery. The Lions showed superior structure, finishing ability and composure as they exacted revenge for last season's heartbreaking Currie Cup final loss. With confidence high, the Lions now shift focus to a testing home fixture against Western Province at Ellis Park next Saturday.
