Just when you thought the Lord of the Rings product train had run out of steam, Wētā Workshop has more, Bill Hickman writes.
Wētā Workshop has released a new video game that allows players to build their own home in a Hobbit village in Middle Earth.
Tales of the Shire is billed as a "cosy game" providing a calmer, more meditative experience than the frenetic pace of traditional video games.
Players create Hobbit characters — from choosing the possessions that adorn their Hobbit-hole homes to selecting the extent of hair on their little feet.
The Hobbit avatars move about in a picturesque Middle Earth world buffeted by seasonal winds and are guided by birds as they tend to their gardens, fish, cook and interact with other townsfolk.
Wētā Workshop founder Sir Richard Taylor said as the world emerged from the height of the pandemic, it made sense to create a game that was a departure from the conflict and drama that fuelled much of the Lord of the Rings films.
"Tolkien described The Shire as Warwickshire circa 1890 type of world. This is pastoral England, this is beautiful days of slashing down the corn in the fields and harvesting, making hearty meals for your family," Taylor said.
He said the game's look was purposely designed to emphasise the beauty and calm of the idyllic setting that was home to the Hobbits.

"We wanted to create a wonderfully, painterly watercolour world so it felt like you were stepping into a living picture, dotted with trees and hobbit holes," Taylor said.
Game studio director Tony Lawrence said, at its peak, 54 people collaborated on the game, working out of Wētā's Miramar workshop as well as from Italy, Australia and California.
The game's creators were able to draw on the studio's 25 years of bringing Middle Earth to life to add authenticity to the settings and activities players encountered, he said.
"If there's a question about Lord of the Rings we've quite a few experts just lurking around the place that can help us with anything. If we wanted to understand how a character might make a sword, having a master sword [maker] onsite is pretty good to come watch. They're the kind of things that you can't do anywhere else in any other studio," Lawrence said.
Lawrence said the government's rebate for game developers was an important factor in helping Wētā take the time to develop the game's detail and depth. — RNZ

The highlight of the Light Up Winter festival in Cronwell is the mass release of lanterns into the dark Central Otago sky. This year the lanterns would be collected, sent to a worm farm and made into compost. PHOTOS: ELLA JENKINS The atmosphere at Cromwell's Anderson Park Rose Garden was joyful as visitors relished the sights and sounds at this year's Light Up Winter event held on Saturday. Event co-ordinator Anthea Lawrence reckoned there were between 5000 and 6000 visitors during the evening. Plenty of time was spent organising this year's event, with Mrs Lawrence joking that in the days leading up to the event her house looked like a crew from the Hoarders TV show was about to arrive. The whole family chipped in to help Mrs Lawrence's husband, Trevor, make a lit-up sign for the event and assist with the setting up. Son Ed came home from university to help out as well, she said. "Like we're very happy. The night is great. We're happy with the turnout," Mrs Lawrence said. This year, crowd favourites such as Thomas the Train, the fire dancers and fairies made returns, but there were some new additions too. "More things going on. Vintage fire truck ... bigger, better mulled wine tents," Mrs Lawrence said. More food stalls were also added to address demand. "We're hoping that everyone's happy with not waiting too long," Mrs Lawrence said. Cromwell and Districts Promotion Group marketing and communications manager Tanya Dennis said people from across New Zealand and from overseas came to visit, with some co-ordinating the event with their ski trips. The highlight of the night was the lighting and release of lanterns. A thousand were sold and they were so popular there was a waiting list, Mrs Dennis said. Those who had lanterns flocked to the field to let them go and admire them as they climbed into the dark Central Otago sky. Mrs Dennis said the event allowed people to get out and meet their neighbours, see their friends and connect with the community during the darkest days of winter. "Everyone feels that the event is heartwarming," she said.

Layoffs ‘imminent' for Wellington staff at Wētā FX

Around 100 employees are to lose their jobs at digital visual effects and computer animation company Wētā FX. A spokesperson at the Miramar-based company, founded by Sir Peter Jackson, says Wētā FX yesterday informed their crew that they are proposing changes to around 100 roles in its support departments, largely based in Wellington. 'A consultation period has since started with the crew that are proposed to be impacted. Following a period of feedback and review, the changes will be confirmed and impacted crew will be informed,' they say. 'If the proposed changes are confirmed, they will be phased in with specific dates or role transitions dependent on individual agreements and circumstances. 'Wētā FX currently has approximately 2200 crew globally, most of which are contracted artists that are not impacted by the proposed change process. As with all visual effects houses, artist numbers fluctuate based on the needs of current projects, so it is not uncommon for crew numbers to shift over time. 'A number of macro factors have led to the proposed changes, including current challenges facing the global entertainment industry. 'In addition to unexpected delays in projects being greenlit due to financial considerations, the industry continues to feel the long-tail impact of the pandemic, industry strikes, and changes in audience content consumption habits. 'As a leader in visual effects, which happens at the end of a film's creation in the post-production process, Wētā FX is navigating the after-effects of these disruptions to ensure ongoing sustainability.' A Wētā employee, who asked to remain anonymous, says while this round of layoffs doesn't impact artistic departments, contractors in these departments have been told their work agreements will not be renewed at the end of this year. 'This is might seem normal for the way the VFX industry works but this is happening at a completely different scale than it usually would,' they say. 'Managers are asking their crew members if they would consider taking extended unpaid leave of up to nine months with no guarantee that their job would be there after the nine months.' Another employee at Wētā, who does not want to be named, also believes the restructure will also impact contractors, who are expecting to have their work agreements discontinued. 'Understandably, many of us are anxious about the scale of this move and what it means for the future of our careers, our families, and the local creative industry,' they say. News of the job losses comes just two years after another substantial round of layoffs. In 2023 billion-dollar global game tech company Unity Software terminated its service agreement with Wētā, causing 265 redundancies. A number of staff were hired back by Wētā, though there were further redundancies several months later, an employee tells Newsroom. The San Francisco-based company purchased Wētā Digital in 2021 for US$1.625 billion (NZ$2.64b), while its VFX teams continued under the Wētā FX arm – of which Jackson holds majority ownership. Wētā, which earlier this year announced plans to establish a permanent Melbourne headquarters, has provided visual effects to Avatar, Game of Thrones, The Lord of the Rings and Planet of the Apes.
