Chokers to champions: Kagiso Rabada explains how Shukri Conrad reshaped Proteas' team culture

IOL News25-06-2025
In the past the Proteas have fallen short in ICC events when it really mattered with a team stacked with some of the greatest names in South African cricket.
Gun speedster Kagiso Rabada has been in a few of those teams who arrived at World Cups and flattered to deceive, as the legacy of the 'chocker' tag kept on growing and growing.
But in June 2025 that tag was finally shed by a bunch of players - besides Rabada of course, who are not exactly seen as world beaters, but players who contributed at the right time and the right place. They beat the arch-enemy Australia in the final of the World Test Championship at Lord's to finally break that curse.
For the current class of Proteas it's about the collective effort and a team first ethos. It's why Rabada and many of his teammates are playing the game with a smile on their faces.
'I was part of teams that had AB de Villiers, Hashim Amla and Dale Steyn. We were the number one team in the world in 2019, but we didn't even make the knockouts (of the 50-over World Cup in England),' Rabada said at a media event at Red Bull in Cape Town on Wednesday.
'I really enjoyed playing in that team, and those guys are legends. But we really don't have those guys in the team anymore.

We're slowly starting to figure it out, says Brad Binder after Czechia MotoGP eighth-place finish

Brad Binder finished eighth in the Czech Republic this past weekend. Photo: Red Bull Image: Red Bull Brad Binder was once again made to work hard as he charged from the back of the grid to walk away from the Czech Grand Prix with a valuable eighth-place finish, salvaging points after another gritty ride. The South African returned to the Brno circuit — the same track where he made history in 2020 by delivering not only his first MotoGP win but also KTM's first in the premier class — with hopes of reviving his season, which has been far from easy so far. The 29-year-old started his race from 19th place looking for more improvement following his 10th-place finish in Saturday's sprint race. 3 KTM's in the top 10! 💪🧡#CzechGP — RED BULL KTM FACTORY RACING (@KTM_Racing) July 20, 2025 Video Player is loading. 'I still never had the pace I was looking for, but somehow we were a little better (Sunday)," Binder said after the race. 'I found a way to be better in mid-corner and exit, but I was losing a lot of time in braking and entry. 'It just seemed to be more controllable in my hand, so I was really happy about that, and by no means am I happy with 8th position, but — even though it doesn't look like it — we are slowly starting to figure it out. 'This is something we have to work on and find the combination; if we can do that, then it can be very positive. We tried something completely different with the bike, a little bit with the engine character, and it helped a bit with the edge grip and the drive.' Spanish rider and Binder's teammate Pedro Acosta continued his good form with the RC16 as he secured a podium third-place finish behind championship favorite Marc Marquez and Aprilia's Marco Bezzecchi, who was second. Acosta has been the top KTM rider this season, currently finding himself in t of the championship riders, and Binder believes he can take away valuable lessons from his teammate and Tech3's Enea Bastianini, who also looked strong before crashing out in the main race. 'The really good thing is that both Pedro and Enea were super-fast this weekend, so I have some good things to check and figure out how they are doing it.'

Sundowns' Cardoso reacts to being honoured in Portugal

'I received a letter from the President of the Portuguese Football Federation, recognising the work I've recently done in Africa,' said the Sundowns head coach. Miguel Cardoso, head coach of Mamelodi Sundowns during the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup press conference at TQL Stadium in Cincinnati, USA on 20 June 2025 © Lynne Gleeson/BackpagePix Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Miguel Cardoso has reacted to being recognised in his homeland after a remarkable debut season in South African football. Cardoso guided the Brazilians to an unprecedented eighth consecutive league title, securing the 2024/25 Betway Premiership crown. He also led Sundowns to the CAF Champions League final, where they were narrowly beaten by Egyptian giants Pyramids FC. Despite that defeat, Cardoso's achievements have not gone unnoticed in Portugal. ALSO READ: Sundowns' Ribeiro wins Club World Cup goal of the tournament Before taking over the reins from Manqoba Mgqithi at Sundowns last December, Cardoso won the Tunisian league with Esperance and also lost in the final of the Champions League to Al Ahly 'It's true that I was also honoured in Portugal. I received a letter from the President of the Portuguese Football Federation, recognising the work I've recently done in Africa,' Cardoso said. 'I was also recognised by the Portuguese Football Coaches Association and awarded the José Maria Pedroto Award which is named after a very important coach in Portugal who managed FC Porto. This award is directly related to the work at Mamelodi Sundowns, including our champions league final qualification and winning the PSL.' The 53-year-old tactician has been nominated for the PSL Coach of the Season award, alongside Stellenbosch FC's Steve Barker and former Orlando Pirates boss José Riveiro. Reflecting on the campaign, Cardoso highlighted key moments that shaped his successful season. 'I have many fantastic memories that come to mind regarding the first season here in the PSL. I think there are different moments but I can highlight the start which was amazing and difficult but very good in terms of results with important matches that were won immediately against Stellenbosch FC and AmaZulu FC away,' he concluded. 'That gave us the positive energy to gather the souls of everyone together and then I remember the month of January where we scored goal after goal and won matches by big margins. At that moment we sent a powerful statement and I also remember the period after we won against Al Ahly and qualified for the Caf Champions League final. ALSO READ: I'll not be involved in the running of Siwelele – McKenzie 'We had six matches to play until the end of the season and we recorded six victories in a row with outstanding performances and wonderful football played. For me, memories remain the joy of the people and fans and the joy of playing good football and the joy of players celebrating victories.'

Chimaev tipped as early favourite to take UFC title from Du Plessis

Du Plessis has won 11 fights in succession, but Chimaev remains unbeaten in 14 professional bouts. Mixed martial arts fighter Dricus du Plessis will have lots of support from fans back home and across the world in his next title defence, but he will have to be at his best against an undefeated opponent who has been tipped as the early favourite. Du Plessis and Russia-born fighter Khamzat Chimaev of the UAE will meet in the cage for the first time at UFC 319, to be held in Chicago on 17 August. And the South African will be confident of retaining his middleweight belt as he looks to expand on his winning streak of 11 fights and an impressive career record which includes 21 wins and just two defeats from his 23 professional bouts. Third title defence Du Plessis first won the UFC middleweight title in January last year, against Sean Strickland, and he has since successfully defended his title against Israel Adesanya and Strickland. However, Chimaev won't be a pushover and he enters the fight with a real chance to take the belt against the more experienced champion. Ranked third in the middleweight division, Chimaev has won all 14 of his professional contests, ending nine of those fights in the first round. Khamzat Chimaev will face Dricus du Plessis next month. Picture: Giuseppe Cacace/AFP Odds on the challenger Early odds favour the challenger, with Betway offering 1.47 for Chimaev to win, though Du Plessis is also given a decent chance at 2.38, and he will be eager to prove once again that he deserves to wear the middleweight belt. There are also 10 other fights on the UFC 319 card which give punters additional options to make some cash. These Betway odds are correct at time of publishing and are subject to change.
