SHAH ALAM: More than 10 bodies, including those of infants, have been discovered during the ongoing Klang River Flood Mitigation Project, which is actively being implemented under the Selangor Maritime Gateway (SMG) initiative, Sinar Harian reports.
Landasan Lumayan Sdn Bhd (LLSB) managing director Syaiful Azmen Nordin told the Malay language daily that the discovery of bodies is not an isolated incident, occurring almost monthly since the dredging and widening works on the river began on Nov 1, 2022.
"So far, we have handed over more than 10 bodies to the police and Fire and Rescue Department for further investigation.
"In fact, we once found three bodies consecutively," he said after visiting the SMG Flood Mitigation Project site in Zone 8 at Kota Kemuning on Monday (June 16).
He told Sinar Harian that LLSB, as the main developer of the project under SMG, also faces significant challenges as some of the bodies found include infants, making this one of the most unexpected aspects of the project implementation.
In addition to the discovery of bodies, the implementation team also encountered severe pollution, having found various types of waste and rubbish, including refrigerators, lorry tyres, beds, mattresses, sofas, and even motorcycles at the bottom of the Klang River.
"I myself do not understand how a refrigerator could end up in the river," he said, describing the existing level of pollution as serious and challenging for the dredging works.
This mitigation project is part of a holistic effort under SMG to increase the Klang River's capacity by up to 40%, as well as to restore the ecosystem and improve the water quality to Water Quality Index (WQI) Class III and above.
According to Syaiful Azmen, this project also supports the Shah Alam Sustainable Urban Drainage (SASUD) initiative and the development of a water treatment plant at Sungai Rasau, in efforts to make the Klang River a source of raw water that can be treated into drinking water.
"To date, more than 918,936 cubic metres of dredged materials such as sediment, rubbish, and rocks have been removed from the riverbed," he told Sinar Harian.
The project also involves widening the river from 50m–60m to 80m–100m, strengthening the banks using methods such as earth bunds, sheet piles, geo bags, and flood walls, and employing the latest technology in flood mitigation systems.
Currently, the project is actively being implemented in Shah Alam, covering Zones 6, 7, and 8, including areas such as Alam Impian, Section 24, Section 17, and Kota Kemuning, identified as high flood-risk locations.
LLSB assures that disruptions to the local community are minimal through measures such as alternative routes, noise and dust monitoring, and early notification to residents.
"This project not only increases river capacity and prevents flash floods but also restores the dignity of the Klang River as a valuable water resource and sustainable ecosystem," he stated.
He further added that the project implementation will continue in other areas along the Klang River based on flood risk priority and population density.
"Our challenges are not insignificant, but we are confident that this integrated approach represents the future of water management and flood mitigation in Selangor," he added.

Foreigners caught running illegal taxi services near shopping mall in Subang Jaya

PETALING JAYA: Four foreign nationals operating illegal e-hailing services around a shopping mall here were caught in a special operation by the Selangor Road Transport Department (JPJ) recently. The four were two Syrians, a Yemeni and a Sudanese. They were detained on suspicion of running taxi services without any valid authorisation, Sinar Harian reported. The 30 to 40 year-old-men were said to be just fetching their friends or relatives when detained during an operation on July 6. Selangor JPJ director, Azrin Borhan said the operation was carried out based on complaints from the public noting the four cars used by the suspects, which are — Toyota Alphard, Hyundai Starex, Perodua Aruz dan Perodua Alza. In a statement today, he said the group's modus operandi involved using contacts from their home countries to find Arab tourists staying around the shopping mall area. Inspections revealed a total of eight offences, including the absence of a valid Competent Driving Licence (CDL) and misuse of Motor Vehicle Licences (LKM), he said. That particular location had become a hotspot as it is frequently visited by tourists from Middle Eastern countries, he added. 'Complaints received from the public reported the presence of several vehicles believed to be offering illegal taxi services in the area. 'Investigations also found that the fares charged were higher than those of legitimate services such as taxis or e-hailing, but passengers didn't mind as they could afford to pay,' said Azrin. According to him, one of the factors that makes tourists easily deceived by illegal taxi services is that they feel more comfortable using the services of Arab drivers. 'In addition to easier communication in the same language, some bookings are even made from their home countries before arriving in Malaysia. 'This situation facilitates the illegal operation, making it difficult for authorities and other road users to identify them,' he said. Azrin stated that firm action will be taken against any individual, including foreign nationals, found to be misusing licences or conducting public transport services without authorization. 'JPJ Selangor continuously conducts monitoring and enforcement based on all complaints received to ensure road laws are upheld. 'Any information related to illegal e-hailing activities can be reported via email at aduantrafik@ or through the e-Aduan JPJ app, including the complainant's details and incident information for further action,' he said.

RM120mil infant formula cartel: MACC questions ten, including family of four

SHAH ALAM: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has recorded statements from 10 individuals as part of an investigation into a infant formula supply cartel to a government department, which failed to meet Sirim Bhd's standards, valued at approximately RM120mil, Sinar Haria reports. Sources told the Malay language daily that four of these individuals are a married couple and their two sons. "This family of four are the owners and directors of the company suspected of orchestrating the cartel," the source revealed. As of now, account seizures have amounted to RM174.6mil, involving 24 individual accounts and 51 company accounts. MACC is also set to investigate the government department linked to the cartel issue. MACC special operations senior director Datuk Mohamad Zamri Zainul Abidin confirmed the asset seizure and told Sinar Harian that the case remains under investigation. An exclusive report by Sinar Harian on Wednesday (July 9) revealed that MACC, in collaboration with the Inland Revenue Board (LHDN) and Bank Negara, uncovered the cartel following the arrest of three family members aged between 40 and 70 years old, comprising two owners and a company director. MACC chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki noted that the company owned by the husband and wife had allegedly monopolised the milk powder supply tender for 20 years. The suspects are believed to have supplied substandard milk powder to a government department across peninsular Malaysia from 2021 to 2024. Subsequently, the MACC raided a milk processing plant and two companies in the Klang Valley. Preliminary investigations also found that many companies securing the milk powder supply tenders to the government department were unrelated to food and beverage production, processing, and distribution. These companies were primarily involved in furniture, electrical, contracting, real estate, transportation, and civil engineering sectors, with some earning profits between 10% to 50% from the milk powder supply.
