Universal Horror Unleashed picks Chicago for second site

Miami Herald17 hours ago
ORLANDO, Fla. - A Universal Horror Unleashed attraction will open in Chicago, the company announced Thursday, although its first foray into year-round horror isn't scheduled to open in Las Vegas until August.
"We're bringing the full force of horror and thrills to a whole new audience in a whole new place," Universal Orlando posted on social media.
Unleashed is a product of Orlando-based Universal Destinations & Experiences, a division of Comcast NBCUniversal.
It will be Universal's first location in the Midwest. The company has been exploring new markets. Beyond Las Vegas, Universal is building a kids-oriented theme park near Dallas, which is set to open in 2026, and is planning a theme park in England.
The Chicago expansion also is an extension of Universal's long-running horror brand. Universal Studios invented the film genre in the 1930s with movies based on Dracula, Frankenstein's monster and other creatures. Universal Studios Florida theme park is preparing its 34th edition of Halloween Horror Nights, an after-hours fright fest that has grown to include Universal Studios Hollywood park in California as well as theme parks in Singapore and Japan.
The monsters roam their own land called Dark Universe in the Epic Universe theme park, which opened in Orlando in May.
The Chicago venue will be on Chicago Avenue at the former Tribune Distribution Center near Bally's Casino.
"We're excited to bring this bold concept to life in Chicago, a city known for its vibrant culture," Page Thompson, president of new ventures at Universal Destinations & Experiences, said in a news release. "We're grateful for the city's support as we convert this dormant site into a unique attraction that showcases our storytelling expertise and ability to deliver mind-blowing experiences that shatter guest expectations."
Themes for the new Unleashed mazes, expected to debut in 2027, were not announced. The Las Vegas location will open with four haunted mazes.

Disney World is closing some classic rides to build its biggest land ever

Several attractions at Walt Disney World's Magic Kingdom park are now closed to guests in order to make room for a new land that's being developed, Piston Peak National Park. The impacted attractions are located in Frontierland and Liberty Square. To make space for the park expansion, the following attractions are permanently closed: Rivers of America Tom Sawyer Island Liberty Square Riverboat Inspired by America's national parks Magic Kingdom's brand-new Piston Peak National Park area will be wilderness-themed. Disney has said the land is inspired by the Rocky Mountains and the history and scenery of the American frontier and its national parks. The fictional national park will feature a Disney and Pixar Cars -themed universe. According to Disney, it will be the largest expansion in the Magic Kingdom's history. Disney explained some plans for the new land in a June 2025 Disney Parks Blog post. The company shared the following: 'Inside Piston Peak, guests will be able to see and explore the visitor lodge, Ranger HQ, trails, and more, all set within the Disney and Pixar Cars universe.' The post continued: 'To make sure these buildings fit naturally within the surrounding majestic landscapes, Imagineers are using a style of architecture called 'Parkitecture,' which was developed by the National Park Service to create structures that harmonize with the natural environment.' Fast Company contacted Disney for more information. No opening date has been announced yet. More coming to Disney's Magic Kingdom Piston Peak National Park isn't the only renovation currently underway at the Magic Kingdom. In January 2025, Frontierland's Big Thunder Mountain Railroad temporarily closed for renovations. The roller coaster is set to reopen in 2026. Here are a few more expansions coming to Disney's Magic Kingdom: A nighttime parade experience, ' Disney Starlight,' will debut on July 20. A new pirate-themed tavern, The Beak and Barrel, is set to open in late 2025, and will serve food and nonalcoholic and alcoholic drinks. 'Villain's Land,' a Disney villain-themed park addition featuring attractions, dining, and shopping experiences, will be built. No opening date has been announced.

How S.F.'s Dolby Cinema helped ‘Jurassic World Rebirth' roar to $147 million opening

The Fourth of July weekend was a roaring success for Dolby Cinemas. The San Francisco-based Premium Large Format movie company, a division of Dolby Laboratories, reported on Monday, July 7 that it had its best-ever Independence Day weekend thanks to the box-office dominance of ' Jurassic World Rebirth.' The seventh entry in the venerable dinosaur franchise played on all 167 domestic Dolby Cinema screens, pulling in $4.6 million over the three-day holiday weekend and nearly $8 million over the five days since the movie premiered on Wednesday, July 2, for the company, a Dolby Cinemas spokesperson told the Chronicle. 'The spectacular performance of 'Jurassic World Rebirth' at Dolby Cinema demonstrates that moviegoers continue to seek premium experiences for tentpole films,' said Jed Harmsen, Dolby's head of cinema and group entertainment, in a statement. Dolby's previous July 4th weekend record came in 2019, when ' Spider-Man: Far From Home ' drew in $3 million over the traditional weekend. 'Jurassic World Rebirth' pulled in a North American total of $91.5 million over the traditional weekend and $147.3 million over its first five days. Those figures highlight the fact that Dolby screenings, which feature Dolby Vision ultra-vivid picture quality and Dolby Atmos immersive sound, accounted for 5% of the films box office revenue while playing in just 1.8% of total screens. This translates to a per-screen average of about $47,000 for Dolby, surpassing other Premium Large Format experiences such as IMAX, 4DX and ScreenX. Dolby has a partnership with AMC Theatres, with Dolby Cinema featured in several local venues including the AMC Metreon 16 in San Francisco. Dolby was founded in London in 1965 by Bay Area-raised engineer Ray Dolby, who developed a revolutionary noise reduction system first used in Stanley Kubrick's 1971 masterpiece 'A Clockwork Orange.' Dolby, who died in 2013 at age 80, moved the company to San Francisco in 1976.
