6 months on, no work in sight at Venjaramoodu flyover site

Time of India13-06-2025
T'puram: Six months after inauguration of the construction of Venjaramoodu flyover, not a single brick was laid. The project, envisioned to ease congestion at one of the busiest junctions on the MC Road, was caught in a tangle of bureaucratic delays, primarily due to the failure to shift overhead electric lines and remove power poles from the proposed construction site.
As a result, daily commuters, pedestrians and local business owners are bearing the brunt of mounting traffic bottlenecks and prolonged uncertainty. The flyover project, awarded to Uralungal Labour Contract Cooperative Society (ULCCS), was seen as a vital infrastructure upgrade for the region. But since the formal inauguration, the ground reality remains unchanged.
"The delay in relocating electric cables underground and removing electric posts stalled the actual commencement of construction," confirmed a senior PWD official.
"We cannot proceed with piling or excavation until KSEB completes the necessary utility shifting. The coordination has taken longer than expected," the official added.
The flyover was expected to be a game-changer for traffic movement between
Thiruvananthapuram
and Kottarakkara. Vehicles pile up during peak hours, especially at the congested four-way intersection, leading to frequent gridlocks and safety concerns.
Locals and daily commuters are growing increasingly frustrated by the lack of visible progress.
"Every day it's the same chaos," said Sunitha Raj, a schoolteacher who commutes from Kilimanoor to Venjaramoodu. "They held an inauguration with great fanfare. Now it is just barricades and dust," she added.
Meanwhile, Vamanapuram MLA D K Murali, under whose constituency the project falls, told TOI that the delays were unfortunate but assured the public that the issue is being addressed. "This is a critical project for Venjaramoodu and the surrounding areas.
I have taken up the matter with both PWD and KSEB. We hope to resume the construction works by next month and the utility works will be completed within two weeks," he said.
He also added that the KSEB has to call a tender for the utility shifting works.
According to sources, the initial utility relocation proposal was caught in a back-and-forth between the PWD and KSEB regarding funding and clearances. Though officials insist that coordination meetings have been held, no clear timeline for commencement has been announced.

DM asks officials to expedite work on Kanwar Yatra routes

Varanasi: District magistrate Satyendra Kumar inspected the Kanwar Yatra routes, including key intersections like Girjaghar and Godaulia, in preparation for the upcoming influx of devotees and kanwarias during the month of Shrawan. The inspection aimed to ensure smooth access to the Kashi Vishwanath temple, facilitating easy viewing, water offerings and seamless movement for pilgrims. The DM gathered detailed information about the Kanwar Yatra route from PWD and municipal officials, stressing the importance of timely completion of all tasks. He directed the PWD executive engineer to finish the interlocking work of one lane from the ropeway station to Gurubagh by the next morning. Kumar and additional police commissioner Shivhari Meena inspected the Kanwar Yatra route up to Modela Tiraha and Mohansarai, emphasizing the need for timely completion of tasks. During the inspection at Bhaskar Pokhara, Kumar was informed that over 80% of kanwariyas stop there to bathe and eat, with peak crowds expected on the first Monday of Shrawan and the day before Nag Panchami. He directed repairs for broken lights, thorough cleaning of the premises, and barricading of the pond to ensure a smooth experience for devotees. The DM visited Matadeen Sukul Inter College near Bhaskar Pokhara to assess parking facilities, with Jagatpur Inter College identified as an alternative parking site. He inspected the road from Modela Tiraha to Mohansarai, announcing that the left lane and service lane from Mohansarai to Modela Tiraha would be reserved for devotees and Kanwarias. The DM instructed the PWD executive engineer to ensure robust barricading at key points, including Modela Tiraha and Mohansarai. During this time, ADM city Alok Kumar Verma, DCP Gomti Pramod Kumar, PWD executive engineer KK Singh, along with other officials and police officers, were present.

Experts want study to stop Paroda flooding, Don Bosco's 2015 paper resurfaces

Margao: Following the submergence of Paroda village on Thursday, which necessitated the diversion of traffic along the Margao-Quepem road through Chandor, engineering experts have renewed their call for a study to address the problem of annual flooding during the monsoon. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The issue has once again highlighted the inadequacy of the flood-prevention measures undertaken by the PWD on the Paroda stretch of the road. Despite the PWD raising the vulnerable road stretch two years ago, the measure proved largely ineffective. A decade-old academic study by the final-year civil engineering students from Don Bosco College of Engineering, Fatorda, has resurfaced as a potential roadmap for long-term flood management solutions. The 2015 dissertation, titled 'Flood Management of Paroda Village', presents a scientifically backed study. The project, supervised by assistant professor Satyesh Kakodkar, proposed a sophisticated flood-diversion system based on extensive topographic and hydrographic surveys of the Kushawati river. The study's core recommendation involves constructing diversion headworks 1,123m upstream of the flood-prone Paroda-Avedem bridge, coupled with a 3,155m diversion canal designed to channel excess water away from the vulnerable area. Particularly significant is the study's proposal for an offline storage pond system, which would temporarily store diverted floodwater in designated areas of the floodplain before releasing it back to the river or alternative watercourses. This approach aims to avoid the submergence of surrounding inhabited areas while effectively managing peak discharge periods. The Don Bosco study also identified solutions aimed at improving water flow capacity during heavy rain. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now These included strategic dredging of the river at Caurem — 200m of riverbed clearing to a depth of 0.3m, extending 100m upstream and downstream of the Caurem bridge. Engineering experts who analysed the study pointed out that its observations remain strikingly relevant today. They have made a strong pitch for state govt to commission a flood management study. They have suggested that either the PWD or the water resources department undertake this research directly or engage the civil engineering departments of Goa's engineering colleges. 'Such a commissioned study would build upon the foundational work already completed by the Don Bosco students, incorporating modern hydrological modelling techniques and climate change projections to develop robust, long-term solutions,' said a civil engineer specialising in hydraulic engineering.
