Amayizhanjan Canal cleanup near Thampanoor rail tunnel nears completion
Thiruvananthapuram: Nearly a year after the tragic death of sanitation worker N Joy, who died while cleaning a garbage filled tunnel of Amayizhanjan Canal near Thiruvananthapuram Central railway station in Thampanoor, desilting and renovation work in the area is finally nearing completion. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The works are being carried out by major irrigation department at a cost of Rs 63 lakh. While desilting under the railway tunnel has been completed, works in other parts of the canal remain overdue. The slab-laying work at Vanchiyoor stretch of the canal, which was awarded to Uralungal Labour Contract Cooperative Society (ULCCS), has been stalled due to a mismatch between the project's estimated cost and the quoted tender. According to sources, ULCCS quoted a rate that was 79% higher than the department's estimate. As a result, the irrigation department is awaiting sanction from finance department to proceed. A senior official stated that most of the canal works under their jurisdiction have either been completed or were in the final stages. The renovation work from Observatory to Ulloor is nearly completed and the Rs 9 crore project from Ulloor to Pattoor is finished. These efforts included extensive desilting and the construction of reinforced side walls. Similarly, the work from Ulloor to Akkulam is close to completion. These projects are part of a larger pre-monsoon initiative led jointly by major and minor irrigation departments, Thiruvananthapuram corporation and public works department. Amayizhanjan Canal has been one of the key focus areas, particularly the segment running under the railway tracks at Thampanoor, which has been a bottleneck during heavy rains. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now In May this year, state human rights commission stepped in, directing irrigation department and city corporation to act immediately to remove accumulated garbage and ensure smooth flow in all the canals. However, fund crunch remains an issue. Meanwhile, authorities claim that the Centre was yet to release Rs 200 crore for the comprehensive flood mitigation project, including clean-up of all canals and drains in the city based on the proposal submitted by Kerala State Disaster Management Authority last year.

Assembly dining hall to get facelift worth 7.5 cr
T'puram: As the Kerala legislative assembly building celebrates its silver jubilee, state cabinet last week approved a lavish makeover for the cellar dining hall, with a price tag of Rs 7.49 crore. The cabinet's decision sets the stage for a complete transformation of the dining space that serves MLAs, ministers, visiting dignitaries and invited guests during functions. The renovation will be carried out by an accredited agency, selected through a transparent bidding process. Given past precedents in awarding major govt renovation works — including those within the assembly complex — it is widely expected that this project too may be entrusted to Uralungal Labour Contract Cooperative Society (ULCCS), subject to the transparent bidding process mandated by existing norms. The facelift includes Italian marble flooring worth Rs 1.41 crore, alongside rich plywood and fluted panel work, glass partitions and a new false ceiling. Just the flooring work itself costs over Rs 2 crore. The setting will be further enhanced with premium curtains valued at over Rs 21 lakh. Mechanical and electrical upgrades are also part of the project and it includes a Rs 10-lakh sound system and a revamped lighting scheme. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch vàng CFDs với sàn môi giới tin cậy IC Markets Tìm hiểu thêm Undo The estimates for some of these components remain in lumpsum format without detailed breakups. Interestingly, of the 27 civil work items listed for the dining hall, 17 fall under "observed data" — a category typically reserved for custom or non-standard work. Officials note that high-end, branded materials are being preferred for flooring, panelling, curtains and even VIP toilet fittings. Govt has insisted on adherence to strict quality and procurement norms. Any lumpsum provisions will need detailed estimates before final approval. The project marks a symbolic and cosmetic upgrade to the assembly building as it hits the 25-year milestone, ensuring that those who walk the power corridors of the legislature do so on gleaming marble, under elegant ceilings and in well-curtained privacy.

6 months on, no work in sight at Venjaramoodu flyover site
T'puram: Six months after inauguration of the construction of Venjaramoodu flyover, not a single brick was laid. The project, envisioned to ease congestion at one of the busiest junctions on the MC Road, was caught in a tangle of bureaucratic delays, primarily due to the failure to shift overhead electric lines and remove power poles from the proposed construction site. As a result, daily commuters, pedestrians and local business owners are bearing the brunt of mounting traffic bottlenecks and prolonged uncertainty. The flyover project, awarded to Uralungal Labour Contract Cooperative Society (ULCCS), was seen as a vital infrastructure upgrade for the region. But since the formal inauguration, the ground reality remains unchanged. "The delay in relocating electric cables underground and removing electric posts stalled the actual commencement of construction," confirmed a senior PWD official. "We cannot proceed with piling or excavation until KSEB completes the necessary utility shifting. The coordination has taken longer than expected," the official added. The flyover was expected to be a game-changer for traffic movement between Thiruvananthapuram and Kottarakkara. Vehicles pile up during peak hours, especially at the congested four-way intersection, leading to frequent gridlocks and safety concerns. Locals and daily commuters are growing increasingly frustrated by the lack of visible progress. "Every day it's the same chaos," said Sunitha Raj, a schoolteacher who commutes from Kilimanoor to Venjaramoodu. "They held an inauguration with great fanfare. Now it is just barricades and dust," she added. Meanwhile, Vamanapuram MLA D K Murali, under whose constituency the project falls, told TOI that the delays were unfortunate but assured the public that the issue is being addressed. "This is a critical project for Venjaramoodu and the surrounding areas. I have taken up the matter with both PWD and KSEB. We hope to resume the construction works by next month and the utility works will be completed within two weeks," he said. He also added that the KSEB has to call a tender for the utility shifting works. According to sources, the initial utility relocation proposal was caught in a back-and-forth between the PWD and KSEB regarding funding and clearances. Though officials insist that coordination meetings have been held, no clear timeline for commencement has been announced. Follow more information on Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad here .
