8 Mile's Kim Basinger Shared Lovely Thoughts About Working With Eminem, But I Just Can't Get Over The F-Bomb Related Script Request She Had: ‘F–king Pancakes'
In the history of moviemaking there are many, many absurd stories about how and why people got cast (or didn't get cast). I have a feeling 8 Mile would have been a very different movie without Kim Basinger playing the role of Stephanie Smith, the mother to Eminem's character Jimmy in the movie. But if the script had gone just a little bit differently, there's a chance someone else entirely would have occupied the role.
In a wide-ranging interview, Kim Basinger revealed that she actually had a problem with the 8 Mile script when she read it, and it honestly nearly turned her off from the role. Her one request? If they changed one f-bomb-oriented line to another f-bomb-oriented line, she could get behind the character.
I remember reading one line where the mother says, 'Do you want some fucking cereal or some fucking eggs.' And I called Curtis. He picked up the phone, and I didn't even say hello. I just said, 'If you'll change the line to 'fucking pancakes,' I'll do the movie.
Just thinking about what it must have been like to be director Curtis Hanson on the line during that phone call cracks me up. I have no idea if he felt like it was a six-to-one sort of change or if he maybe even thought 'fucking pancakes' sounded way better or way worse. But just the thought of that being a negotiating point amuses me. In the history of wild movie requests, this one definitely stands out as both an unexpected request but also one that was likely relatively easy to fulfill.
It's worth noting Curtis Hanson and Kim Basinger had previously worked together on what some would argue is the "best" detective movie L.A. Confidential before he brought her back into the fold on 8 Mile. She even called him her "dearest friend" in the same interview with Variety. So, she already had a working relationship with the director when she made this script request. But she'd also passed on his movies before, saying no to Wonder Boys a year or two before 8 Mile.
I'm guessing he was confident enough in her intuition, because he gave the change the greenlight, with her giggling about the nature of the request even now, so many years after the movie wrapped. The rest is history, and the movie even went on to win an Academy Award for Best Original song thanks to Eminem's 'Lose Yourself' and it's notable lyrics.
Working as a director on a movie does not sound like it is for the faint of heart. Once on set, though, Ms. Basinger said everyone was a delight, particularly Marshall Mathers, who really went for it in some of the movies tough subject matter scenes.
When Marshall and I started doing these really heavy tough scenes, I remember saying, 'This is only a movie. We're only pretending, but we have to go for it. Let's just go for it. I'm going to say some things and it's going to be horrible and I'm going to keep saying them and they're going to come out of my mouth.' I think we were kind of like two fighters in a ring. To have someone that talented and to have someone that you would have thought had a huge ego, would puff up himself and have an entourage and everything around him, he had some of the nicest people surrounding him that I've ever known. There's nobody in the world like him.
Eminem's 8 Mile had an impact on a whole generation of teens growing up in tough circumstances in struggling cities. (Me, I'm talking about me.) The rapper would go on to return to the Academy Awards in 2020 to pay homage to the song and the movie that lived on, though Hanson didn't live long enough to see it. Despite its resonance, the story behind this request is what will likely leave the most lasting impression on me in the coming years. In fact, one could say I lost myself in the story.

‘Stranger Things' season 5 trailer LIVE— all the latest updates as Netflix drops new teaser trailer
When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. Netflix has finally given us another look at "Stranger Things" season 5 with a brand-new trailer, which just dropped today (Wednesday, July 16). Frankly, it was about time we got fresh info about our next trip to Hawkins, so when the streamer revealed we were due a trailer on July 15, we were excited. Going into the launch, we didn't know when the streaming service's new 'Stranger Things' teaser would arrive, just that it was coming "today," hence all our build-up coverage. Like so many fans, we spend our day refreshing the 'Stranger Things' X account, hoping the trailer would suddenly pop up. And at 10 a.m. ET, it finally did. Not caught it yet? You can find the new "Stranger Things" season 5 trailer below: Watch the 'Stranger Things' season 5 teaser trailer here The long-awaited "Stranger Things" season 5 trailer dropped at 10 a.m. ET, and it really does make the season feel bigger than ever. You can watch it above. Live — Latest Updates We're ready for 'One Last Adventure' - let us see the trailer already! Welcome to TG's 'Stranger Things' season 5 trailer watch live blog! We're so excited to see more from what will doubtless be one of the biggest TV launches of the rest of 2025, and we'll be trying to share as much as possible in the run-up to the trailer's release. Wait, there's a 'Stranger Things' trailer coming today? If you missed the news and are just getting caught up. Netflix revealed that a new trailer would be dropping today on social media, accompanied by this imposing new poster featuring the menacing face of Vecna... Fan reactions look positive While we've not seen the new teaser, members of the cast have shared a clip on social media wherein they gave a handful of lucky fans the chance to watch the new footage. Sure, we've not seen the footage, but if we judge it by their reactions, we're in for an epic final season. In other words: get excited. Reminder: watch the 'Stranger Things' Date Announcement teaser here Our last bit of "Stranger Things" season 5 footage came at Tudum 2025 earlier this year, in the form of the "Date Announcement" teaser. Admittedly, a fair bit of that footage was from past seasons of the show, serving as a reminder of everything that's gone down in Hawkins so far, and a brief look at what's to come in the final season. 'Stranger Things' Season 5 release dates As a reminder, Netflix is once again splitting the forthcoming final instalment up. But unlike season 4, "Stranger Things" fifth chapter will actually be divided into three separate volumes releasing at the end of the year. Those "Stranger Things" season 5 release dates are: "Stranger Things" season 5 Vol. 1 (episodes 1-4): November 26, 2025 "Stranger Things" season 5 Vol. 2 (episodes 5-7): Christmas Day, 2025 "Stranger Things" season 5 Vol. 3 (finale): New Year's Eve, 2025 Basically, we'll all be looking for excuses to dodge our families and grab some Netflix screentime over the holiday season! 'Stranger Things' season 5 plot synopsis Just to refresh your memory of what's in store, I'm gonna share Netflix's "Stranger Things" season 5 plot synopsis below. From what they've shared so far, it sounds like the show's going out in style. "'The fall of 1987. Hawkins is scarred by the opening of the Rifts, and our heroes are united by a single goal: find and kill Vecna. But he has vanished — his whereabouts and plans unknown. Complicating their mission, the government has placed the town under military quarantine and intensified its hunt for Eleven, forcing her back into hiding. As the anniversary of Will's disappearance approaches, so does a heavy, familiar dread. The final battle is looming — and with it, a darkness more powerful and more deadly than anything they've faced before. To end this nightmare, they'll need everyone — the full party — standing together, one last time.' 'Stranger Things' season 5 episode titles Here are the official episode titles for 'Stranger Things' season 5, which consists of eight episodes split across three volumes: Episode 1: The Crawl Episode 2: The Vanishing of … (full title intentionally unrevealed) Episode 3: The Turnbow Trap Episode 4: Sorcerer Episode 5: Shock Jock Episode 6: Escape from Camazotz Episode 7: The Bridge Episode 8: The Rightside Up 'Stranger Things' star teases season 5 finale as the 'the best episode they've ever done' Concerned that the long-awaited final season of 'Stranger Things' might not deliver? According to Jim Hopper himself (David Harbour), fans have nothing to worry about. Speaking during a live taping of the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Harbour described the Season 5 finale as 'the best episode they've ever done.' Although he admitted, 'I can be very critical of this show,' Harbour had nothing but praise for the final episode: 'They land the plane, and it is the best episode they've ever done. The end of this episode when we were reading it — just us reading it — about halfway through, people started crying. Then about the last 20 minutes, it was just uncontrollably crying, waves of different people. Noah Schnapp being my favorite.' Reflecting on the cast's journey, he added, 'They started the show when they were 11 and 12, and here we are reading [the finale]. It's 10 years later, and we examine that idea, and it's so well done and so beautiful. It's such a great episode, and it's such a great season. You guys will love it.' (quotes h/t Deadline). Will there be any new faces in 'Stranger Things' season 5? Yes! According to Netflix Tudum, Nell Fisher, Jake Connelly, and Alex Breaux have been added to the lineup for 'Stranger Things' season 5. They'll be joined by genre icon Linda Hamilton, whose involvement in the final chapter is confirmed, though details about her character are still being kept under wraps. Full cast list for 'Stranger Things' season 5 Here's a look at the full cast confirmed for the fifth and final season: Winona Ryder as Joyce Byers David Harbour as Jim Hopper Millie Bobby Brown as Eleven Finn Wolfhard as Mike Wheeler Gaten Matarazzo as Dustin Henderson Caleb McLaughlin as Lucas Sinclair Noah Schnapp as Will Byers Sadie Sink as Max Mayfield Natalia Dyer as Nancy Wheeler Charlie Heaton as Jonathan Byers Joe Keery as Steve Harrington Maya Hawke as Robin Buckley Priah Ferguson as Erica Sinclair Brett Gelman as Murray Bauma Jamie Campbell Bower as Vecna Cara Buono as Karen Wheeler Amybeth McNulty as Vickie Nell Fisher as Holly Wheeler Jake Connelly as Derek Alex Breaux as Lt. Akers Linda Hamilton as Dr. Kay Will's journey comes full circle From the beginning to the end, 'Stranger Things 'comes full circle. In season 1, Will was the one who vanished. In season 5, he's the one leading the fight. Stranger Things Memes on X clearly wants to break hearts today. 'Stranger Things' actor confirms they appeared in the final scene shot for season 5 Finn Wolfhard, who plays Mike, has revealed that he was involved in the final scene filmed for "Stranger Things" season 5 — a detail that raises questions about whether Mike Wheeler survives until the end of the series. 'I was the last thing shot of the show,' Wolfhard said during a recent episode of Q with Tom Power when asked about his final day on set. But when Power followed up with, 'So you're the last shot of the last scene,' the actor clarified, saying, 'Well, no, it was that we just like wrapped, like I just was like one of the last people to film basically.' So while it doesn't sound like the finale itself was the last thing shot, Wolfhard was among the final cast members on set, suggesting his character could be around for much of the final season. It's worth noting that TV productions often shoot scenes out of order. We're all 'so ready' for this trailer to drop Obviously, we're all excited, but just to gauge how much, take a quick scroll through the #StrangerThings5 hashtag on X - fans around the world literally couldn't be more pumped to get another look at "Stranger Things" season 5. Mostly, I'm seeing tweet after tweet of "I'M SO READY". IT'S HAPPENING THE TRAILER IS OUT! I REPEAT: THE TRAILER IS OUT! Let's go!! The vibe is impeccable. The stakes look huge, everyone's banding together for the final fight, to an epic score. The monsters, the jeopardy: I love it! 'Let's end this, kid' Hopper's words have me thinking Eleven will be pushed to the absolute limit this time to fight Vecna off. Well, that was epic. I'm still gathering my thoughts on everything I've seen, but let's just say this feels like a final season worth waiting for. Everyone's hyped for Season 5 Immediately, my first port of call was to go back to X, to see how that teaser has landed with other "Stranger Things" fans, and it looks like the hype-meter has reached fever pitch already. I'm seeing people grabbing their own screenshots, one viewer calling it a "mind-blowing" teaser, fears for what's to come, and much, much more. New images have also dropped While I'm scrambling to pull my thoughts together on the new teaser, I thought I'd flag that, along with the new trailer, Netflix has also put a new selection of stills from the new season... including this rather foreboding one of Steve Harrington equipped with a chainsaw. I feel sorry for whatever Upside Down beast is about to face him, that's for sure. I already shared another fresh image in the previous post, and will be uploading more of the new images when I can. See Eleven, Joyce, and more in new 'Stranger Things' stills As promised, here's a batch of those newly-released "Stranger Things" season 5 stills (I'll be sharing the remainder of Netflix's newly-released images imminently) Image 1 of 5 Image 2 of 5 Image 3 of 5 Image 4 of 5 Image 5 of 5 Meet some new faces in these new images Just sharing the remaining few stills as I grab them; these last couple feature two new arrivals, including Linda Hamilton's Dr. Kay and Nell Fisher as Mike's younger sister, Holly Wheeler. Image 1 of 3 Image 2 of 3 Image 3 of 3 My first few takeaways from today's 'Stranger Things' season 5 trailer Okay, I've started trying to collect my thoughts a little after all of today's excitement. Here's what I'm thinking after processing all the new footage (which I've shared again, for convenience). - This final fight's going to be bigger than ever. With the military presence on site and all those scenes of our gang tooled up and ready for battle, this next season feels way more dangerous. - Max's fate hangs in the balance - Max has already been through the wringer in "Stranger Things" so far, and it looks like that's not about to change. Her last encounter with Vecna left her with broken bones, blinded, and in a coma, and now Lucas is trying to smuggle her out of a facility while being pursued by Demodogs in a scene that screams that "Jurassic Park" scene to me. Can they bring her back? - Vecna looks more powerful than ever... but so does Eleven. Sure, Jamie Campbell Bower's big bad looks even more menacing in the trailer's final moments, but Eleven's gotten stronger, too: she can even fly now. This power creep has me hyped for the final face-off, for sure. And finally, a prediction: with all these shocked and panicked faces and all the danger on display, I'm expecting tragedy to strike and potentially to lose more than one of our major party members. And with that, we can look forward to the show's release (and maybe more info!) later this year. It looks like one hell of a send-off. 'Stranger Things' isn't technically over after season 5 Even though season 5 signals the end of 'Stranger Things' as we know it, we're not entirely leaving Hawkins, Indiana behind. How? Well, as Tudum puts it, 'Saturday morning cartoons are getting turned Upside Down.' Yes, we're getting a 'Stranger Things' animated series at Netflix, and the title was revealed back in April 2025: 'Stranger Things: Tales From '85.' We've always dreamed of an animated Stranger Things in the vein of the Saturday morning cartoons that we grew up loving, and to see this dream realized has been absolutely thrilling," the Duffer Brothers told Tudum. When is 'Stranger Things' season 5 premiering? Mark your calendars: This holiday season, Netflix is serving Demogorgons with the turkey. 'Stranger Things 5' is dropping in three parts, all on or close to big holidays later this year. Volume 1 arrives November 26 (the day before Thanksgiving) with four episodes. Volume 2 drops on Christmas Day with three episodes. Talk about a gift! And Volume 3, the final episode, lands December 31 and is sure you scream in the New Year. Expect eight episodes (many of them supersized) of Hawkins chaos from the Duffer brothers, with the full gang back, including Winona Ryder, David Harbour, Millie Bobby Brown, as well as new face Linda Hamilton joining the fight. Get ready for a holiday party in the Upside Down.

Netflix's new mystery thriller series is one of the best binge-watches of 2025 so far — and you can stream it now
When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. I didn't expect 'Untamed' to grip me the way it did. Netflix's new wilderness-set mystery thriller looked, at first glance, like your standard slow-burn six-episode series: brooding lead, scenic drone shots and just enough murder to justify the 'thriller' label. And sure, it has all of that. But it also has something I didn't see coming, which is actual momentum. The series puts Eric Bana in the leading role as Kyle Turner, a National Parks agent called to Yosemite after a woman is found dead. At first, it seems like a tragic climbing accident. But Turner, who's got just the right amount of baggage and that thousand-yard stare required by all streaming detectives, isn't so sure. What follows is basically a classic murder mystery, just with fewer city streets and more moss-covered rocks. Along the way, he's paired with a rookie ranger, runs into old colleagues and keeps finding himself in situations where you're not sure whether the biggest threat is a person or a bear. And yet, I was into it. 'Untamed' fully embraces its identity as a solid, serious show with a hint of self-importance and it does so confidently. So if the idea of a murder investigation set in a national park sounds even remotely interesting to you, chances are you'll want to stick around for the whole thing. Here's why 'Untamed' deserves a spot on your Netflix watchlist now that it's streaming, even if it's just for the scenery. What is 'Untamed' about? 'Untamed' follows Special Agent Kyle Turner (Eric Bana), a seasoned investigator with the National Park Service's elite Investigative Services Branch. When the body of a young woman is discovered at the base of El Capitan in Yosemite National Park, the initial assumption is a climbing accident. But Turner suspects something more sinister. Teaming up with rookie ranger Naya Vasquez (Lily Santiago), Turner begins to unravel a trail of inconsistencies that point toward foul play. As the pair dig deeper, their investigation leads them into the park's vast, treacherous backcountry where clues are scarce and dangers are plenty. Turner is soon forced to reconnect with Paul Souter (Sam Neill), an old friend and Yosemite's long-serving chief ranger, as well as confront tensions with his ex-wife Jill Bodwin (Rosemarie DeWitt), a counselor working inside the park. With time running out and more bodies surfacing, Turner finds himself at the center of a far-reaching mystery. 'Untamed' is a suspense-filled descent into the dark heart of the wild 'Untamed' starts how most mystery thrillers do — with the crime itself. Two climbers scaling a mountain are nearly sent to their deaths when a woman mysteriously falls from a ledge, dying in the process and getting tangled in their climbing ropes. It's pretty brutal from the start, but it sets the tone for the rest of the series. From there, we're introduced to the brooding Kyle Turner, played brilliantly by Eric Bana, who knows how to play the gruff archetype without becoming another Joel from 'The Last of Us' or Rick from 'The Walking Dead.' Instead, he's trying to do his job without outside interference, all while suppressing his personal baggage, which inevitably resurfaces in each episode. Thankfully, the show doesn't drag out the investigation. In the first episode, Kyle is already scouring the area for clues, and we follow him as he discovers bloodstains on leaves and a bullet hole in a tree. Even though it leans on some genre tropes, it's still compelling enough to keep you watching. Another trope I wasn't initially keen on was the classic 'hardened investigator paired with a rookie' setup. You know, when the rookie questions everything, is too sensitive and challenges the main character's authority by being impulsive. Fortunately, as the episodes go on, 'Untamed' steps out of this cliché and makes Vasquez, the rookie, a genuinely likeable character with a meaningful backstory. She has a dark past, and once that becomes tied into the main storyline, it feels natural. As for the other side characters, they mostly earn their screen time. Bana's Kyle Turner is really the only one you can fully focus on or connect with, especially as his past is fleshed out through conversations with his ex-wife and fellow community members. Sam Neill's Paul Souter, while not featured as much as I would've liked, has an interesting dynamic with Turner as old allies. That said, the mystery is so compelling that I found myself less invested in the characters and more eager to dive deeper into the plot, wishing for more twists and revelations instead of character moments. Alongside the mystery, 'Untamed' delivers some seriously impressive visuals that show just how vast and overwhelming Yosemite National Park really is, and it's kind of terrifying. For context, Yosemite sees a high number of search and rescue (SAR) operations, with over 730 incidents reported between 2018 and 2020. That alone makes 'Untamed' feel a lot more believable when it comes to its central mystery. And that's before you even factor in the bears… Overall, though, 'Untamed' is the kind of bingeable series you might easily finish in one night. The characters aren't especially deep (aside from Turner, who gets some solid development), so you'll probably find yourself most invested in the investigation itself. Just a heads up: Once you press play on episode 1, don't be surprised if you power through the whole thing. You need to stream 'Untamed' on Netflix If you're after a mystery that doesn't rely on gimmicks or overblown twists, 'Untamed' is the rare Netflix thriller that keeps things feeling real and that's exactly what makes it work. It's not exactly original material, but it still leans into what the genre does best: a solid investigation, tension, and a lead performance that holds it all together. The setting alone is worth tuning in for, but it's the slow-creeping suspense and clever unraveling of clues that will keep you pressing next episode. At just six episodes, there's no filler which is more than can be said for a lot of recent limited series. 'Untamed' is now streaming on Netflix, and I definitely recommend checking it out. For more recommendations, see what else is new on Netflix in July 2025. Netflix is about to lose this Adam Sandler comedy movie at the worst time possible — here's your last day to stream 'Happy Gilmore'
When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. Almost 30 years on from the original's release, Netflix is about to drop a sequel to Adam Sandler's comedy favorite, "Happy Gilmore." Yes, everyone's fave unorthodox golfer entered the Tour Championship way back in 1996, but he's coming out of retirement on July 25 for the streaming service's legacy sequel, "Happy Gilmore 2." Anticipation is building, as fans have sent Happy's original outing to the top 10 on Netflix. So, with hype there, and the impending sequel, now feels like it'd be a pretty bad time for Netflix to lose the original "Happy Gilmore" movie, right? Well, unfortunately, that's exactly what's about to happen. Thanks to a warning that's flagged on the movie's listing page, we know that "Happy Gilmore" is leaving Netflix soon. If you're planning your viewing, your last day to stream "Happy Gilmore" on Netflix U.S. is Thursday, July 31. That's just a handful of days after the sequel drops, so if you want to stream both films back to back, you'll only have a very small window to do so on Netflix. And if you haven't seen the original Sandler comedy before, here's a little more info about the film to help you decide whether to bump it up your watchlist or not. What is 'Happy Gilmore' about? Dennis Dugan's sports comedy "Happy Gilmore" follows Adam Sandler's titular dreamer. Happy hopes to become an ice hockey player, but even though he's developed a powerful slapshot, his temper and ice skating skills prevent him from making it big. When he discovers that his grandmother owes the IRS a lot of money and is at risk of losing her home, Happy discovers that his slapshot could be put to use in an entirely different sport altogether: golf. Mentored by Chubbs Peterson (Carl Weathers), Happy sets out to dominate the sporting world to try and earn enough money to pay off his grandmother's debts. In addition to Sandler and Weathers, "Happy Gilmore" also stars Christopher McDonald as Happy's rival, Shooter McGavin, Julie Bowen as Virginia Venit, Frances Bay as Happy's grandmother, plus Ben Stiller, Will Sasso, Bob Barker, Allen Covert, Richard Kiel, and more. Should you stream 'Happy Gilmore' before it leaves Netflix? Reviews for "Happy Gilmore" are somewhat divided. At the time of writing, the movie holds a 63% critics' score on the review aggregate platform, Rotten Tomatoes. The site's consensus reads: "Those who enjoy Adam Sandler's schtick will find plenty to love in this gleefully juvenile take on professional golf; those who don't, however, will find it unfunny and forgettable." Reviewing for Empire, Darren Bignell gave the movie a 3-star rating, writing: "Sandler becomes more personable as the film progresses, and there's a couple of truly side-splitting scenes. And there's a nice edge to the McEnroe-style histrionics because, at the end of the day, it's exactly what most spectators would really love to see on the fairway." The Washington Post's Richard Harrington, meanwhile, said at the time: "'Happy Gilmore' may not be an ace in the hole, but it beats par by a long shot." Roger Ebert, however, wasn't so fond of Sandler's comedy. "Happy Gilmore" earned a 1.5-star rating from the critic, who said: "'Happy Gilmore' tells the story of a violent sociopath. Since it's about golf, that makes it a comedy," and argued it was "the latest in the dumber and dumbest sweepstakes" at the time.. Admittedly, it's been a long time since I revisited "Happy Gilmore" myself, but I do remember getting a few laughs at Happy's antics. It's not my favorite comedy by any stretch, but I'm sure there's still some laughs to be had, if you can get a kick out of Happy's explosive temper (and you don't mind all the brand-name dropping). The fan score is significantly higher, currently sitting at 85% (based on over 250,000 ratings). Take a quick scroll through audience reactions logged on the site, and you'll see a wide range of scores, from plenty of 5-star reviews and fans labelling it a "classic" (even if there are some less-than-stellar reactions, too). All told, if you're convinced by the audience reactions, you know you like Sandler's brand of comedy and/or you're excited for the sequel, then you probably have your answer: yes, you should stream "Happy Gilmore" on Netflix before it disappears.
