18-Year-Old Dancer Found Dead in Her Home Remembered as the 'Most Vibrant Girl': 'Her Time with Us Was Far Too Short'
An 18-year-old dancer is being remembered by her loved ones following her tragic death.
Layla-Maria Grubb was found dead in her home in Australia on Saturday, July 19, according to the Daily Telegraph.
Her family told the outlet that the teenager died just hours after she was sent home from a hospital following a suspected seizure.
"We all want to know what happened. We are searching for answers," Grubb's mother, Beth Ashton, told the Daily Telegraph.
Grubb studied at the dance company Village Nation. The company's director, Briden Starr, described her as a "healthy, positive, focused girl," per the Daily Mail.
In a heartfelt social media post shared after her daughter's death, Ashton wrote, "Our baby girl left us far too soon."
"Layla-Maria brought so much joy, light, and love into the lives of everyone who knew her. A gorgeous dancer, who moved through life with the same beauty and passion she brought to the stage," she continued. "Her laughter, kindness, and beautiful spirit will be deeply missed and forever remembered."
"Though her time with us was far too short, her impact will remain in our hearts, forever 18. ❤️," the grieving mother concluded. "We kindly ask for your thoughts and prayers for our family during this incredibly difficult time."
The JLC Dance Company — which Grubb belonged to in Western Australia — also shared a tribute. The organization said the teen left for Sydney in 2023 to pursue a professional career in dance.
"Layla was on a trajectory to stardom and had immense potential," the JLC Dance Company wrote on Facebook. "Layla was an amazing student, and friend, with a great personality and huge smile that lit up any room."
The group continued: "Layla was an amazing friend to a lot of our staff and students and this devastating news has affected the entire JLC family and everyone that knew Layla for no matter how long, or short.

"Layla was pure light — an amazing dancer with an infectious laugh!" the friends continued, also remembering Grubb as "the funniest, goofiest, most vibrant girl you could ever meet, lighting up every room with her laughter and fun."
A funeral service for the dancer will be held in Sydney on Friday, Aug. 1.
Grubb's death investigation has been referred to the New South Wales coroner, local police told PEOPLE.
"Due to the early stage of the matter, we cannot provide further detail at this time," a spokesperson said.

Four people die in French holiday home fire
A fire that broke out on Monday killed four people at a cottage in southwestern France, where adults with learning disabilities had gone on holiday, a French government official said. Including a couple who owned the house, 14 people aged 20 to 75 were inside the stone house when the blaze broke out before dawn in the village of Montmoreau, according to local officials. The guests included eight people with learning disabilities as well as four carers. The victims included one of the owners of the isolated farmhouse and three people with disabilities, including a 60-year-old woman, said France's minister for people with disabilities, Charlotte Parmentier-Lecocq. "The woman who owned the property entered voluntarily to rescue the people inside and lost her life in the attempt," Parmentier-Lecocq said. Rescue teams arrived on site 20 minutes after they were called, but were unable to resuscitate one person they evacuated, declaring the victim dead by asphyxiation, deputy prefect Jean-Charles Jobart said. They then found two bodies in the remains of the house, he said. A fourth victim was found later in the day in the burned-down guesthouse, said Parmentier-Lecocq. A fifth person remains missing, though authorities expect to find them "in the rubble," she added. The fire, brought under control late in the morning by some 85 firefighters, also left four people injured -- one of whom was initially in critical condition but is now stable, the minister said. The public prosecutor's office has opened an investigation into manslaughter or unintentional injury, said Mathieu Auriol, a deputy prosecutor in the southwestern city of Angouleme. The National Gendarmerie Criminal Research Institute will carry out an investigation to "look for the causes" of the blaze, he added. - Reputable organisation - Deputy prefect Jobart said state services had inspected the cottage two years ago and approved it to welcome people with disabilities during the holidays. But Parmentier-Lecocq later said that the fire had started in an adjacent building, which had not undergone inspection in 2023. "We don't know what caused the fire, whether the smoke detectors worked properly, or how people became aware of the fire," she added. The minister added that the organisation that arranged the trip was reputable and trained, "particularly in fire safety". The fire comes almost two years after another blaze at a holiday home hosting adults with learning disabilities and their companions killed 11 people in eastern France. A prosecutor found that the home in the town of Wintzenheim was unlicensed and flouting fire security standards required for such a property. The guests on the lower floor of the timbered residence all managed to escape alive, but those on the upper floor found themselves trapped. It was the deadliest such fire disaster in the country since a blaze at a bar in the northern city of Rouen in 2016 killed 14 people. mar/ekf/ah/gv

Rugby fan's huge airport surprise after landing in Sydney: 'Surreal'
When rugby superfan Lawrence Hanlin flew into Sydney from Gibraltar as the British & Irish Lions Tour of Australia got underway, he was in for the surprise of his life at the airport. There, waiting to take him to his hotel was his own private chauffeur, in the form of Wallabies legend and former captain Michael Hooper. 'Opening the door to such a legendary rugby player was surreal,' Lawrence, a former rugby player turned referee, tells Yahoo Lifestyle. 'He was incredibly friendly and genuine, which made the experience even better. We chatted about my lifelong passion for rugby - over 45 years now!' The pair exchanged banter about the classic rivalry between the Lions and Australia, and Lawrence was in for even more shocks once he arrived at the InterContinental Sydney, his chosen hotel for the stay. Not only were other top players there to greet him, namely British & Irish Lions players Andrew Porter, Tommy Freeman and Finn Russell, but he also got a signed Lions jersey, something he describes as 'the cherry on top'. He describes the InterContinental Sydney as 'exceptional' and in his 'top five hotels worldwide'. And there's a good reason why he wanted this trip to be extra special. ‘Her heart's too big': Mom killed by falling tree branch as she camped out in shade at daughter's softball tournament
A Pennsylvania mom was killed after being crushed by a falling tree branch during her teenage daughter's softball tournament. Gendie Miller, 49, and her husband Bill Miller were watching their daughter, Marlee, 16, play in the Western PA College Showcase softball camp at Renziehausen Park in McKeesport, Pennsylania, Wednesday when several large tree branches suddenly fell from above them. The had moved to sit under a tree in the shade because temperatures reached 90 degrees. 'I said to my wife, 'Let's go.' I jumped out of my chair, felt a small branch of some sort that grazed my leg. And I immediately turned to my right to look back at her, and she was face down with large, multiple branches and limbs,' Bill Miller told WTAE. He recalled seeing several branches, each about 10 to 12 inches thick, piled on top of his wife of 17 years. It's unclear what led the tree branches to snap. 'Suddenly, the tree started to make cracking noises and a very large branch fell, striking Gendie in the head, knocking her unconscious to the ground, and entrapping her under the tree,' a GoFundMe page read. Bystanders immediately sprang into action, moving the branches off the mom, but the extent of her injuries was too severe. Gendie Miller was rushed to the hospital, but did not survive. 'To be so traumatic, and with the heavy load of the type of branch and limb, it was devastating. And I can tell you that she didn't die from her heart, because her heart's too big,' Bill Miller said. The dedicated mom 'would never miss a practice or an event, high school, travel ball, whatever it was. That was who she was,' her husband said. 'She would give you the shirt off her back,' he added. The grieving dad said both he and their daughter remain in a state of shock following the incident. 'I think I'm in shock, and surreal that it obviously hasn't hit me the worst – nor my daughter, for that matter. She is being very strong. And, you know, worried about that, just as I'm worried about her,' he said. A GoFundMe started by Marlee Miller's coach noted that since it was in the 90s, the couple had decided to sit under a shady tree while watching their daughter perform drills before scrimmaging in front of college coaches. The fundraiser had received over $48,000 in donations as of Monday morning. 'Between medical/ambulance bills, funeral items, and initial lost wages, Bill and Marlee could use all the help they can get,' the page read. 'Although it doesn't bring back their loved one, it takes a little bit of the burden off of coming up with funds they don't have right now for something so sudden and unexpected.'
