Bhubaneswar: The tragic death of a 20-year-old college student in Balasore, who succumbed to burn injuries after setting herself on fire to protest alleged sexual harassment, has triggered a wave of grief, anger, and soul-searching across the state.
People from all walks of life — students, professionals, activists, and ordinary citizens — have taken to social media to mourn her death and demand stronger grievance redressal systems in educational institutions.
"I don't know why we don't have a stronger law in place to punish these molesters and rapists. Intellectuals are in abundance in our administration at the Centre and states and globally. Can't we make a law in this time and era? Women are targets every day, there is a creepy vibe every day around.
We're living with it, growing around it. All we need is a stringent law. I hope I see one in my lifetime," read a post on social media reflecting the widespread outrage.
Another social media post said, "She is no more. All she wanted was justice and her sexual harassment to stop, but the system failed her. I hope the Odisha government deals strictly with her offenders."
The student battled for her life for three days at AIIMS Bhubaneswar before succumbing to her injuries.

The incident has reignited debate over the lack of timely and effective grievance redressal systems in colleges and the urgent need for stricter laws to combat harassment and violence against women.
"Her suffering should shake us. Her death must not be in vain. A young student from Balasore cried out for help but was met with silence, apathy, and power-protected predators," another post read.
Students across the state expressed solidarity and anger.
"Setting herself on fire for justice, she struggled for three long days and finally succumbed. They didn't let her live, but at least let her sacrifice not go in vain. May no other girl become a victim of such a tragic fate. Salute sister for fighting until your last breath," wrote one student.
A psychology student posted, "It's heartbreaking to lose a bright young student. Despite all efforts by AIIMS Bhubaneswar doctors, she couldn't be saved. CM Mohan Majhi has promised strong action against those responsible, and we demand nothing less. Justice must prevail. Deepest condolences to the grieving family."
