Minor seeks permission from Delhi high court to terminate pregnancy after sexual assault, HC asks AIIMS for report
New Delhi: A 16-year-old minor victim of sexual assault sought the Delhi High Court 's nod on Friday to terminate her 26-week-old pregnancy. Taking note of her plight, HC asked for a report about the feasibility of carrying out the termination procedure from the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) after it was informed that, on intimation of the police, the hospital set up a board on Friday itself. "Keeping in mind the urgency cited, the above medical board is directed to conduct the necessary medical examination and to give the requisite report. Let such report be transmitted to this Court in a sealed envelope on or before 30 June 2025, or the investigating officer of the case would be permitted to collect such sealed envelope, containing the report, from the concerned medical board," Justice Manoj Jain noted. Since the current gestational age is beyond the permissible limit of 24 weeks, the mother sought the intervention of the HC for termination of the pregnancy, claiming that the minor learnt only on 21 June 2025 that she was pregnant. Through their counsel, the mother-daughter duo said she wants to terminate the pregnancy arising out of the alleged sexual assault and sought that a medical board be constituted to submit its medical opinion in terms of Section 3(2)(b) of the Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act, 1971. The plea also sought a clear direction to the authorities to medically terminate such pregnancy as she is not willing to continue with it. It was also submitted that since the pregnancy is a direct consequence of sexual assault, the anguish caused by such pregnancy is required to be presumed as a grave injury to her mental health. Aware of the urgency of the situation, as the minor is a victim of sexual assault, the court asked AIIMS to immediately examine the victim and furnish a report so that it can take a call if she is fit to undergo the procedure. Last year, the HC, in a separate matter of a widow suffering from depression, recalled its nod for termination of the fetus after AIIMS, where the woman was medically examined, opined against it. In its report, AIIMS said as per the MTP Act, the provision of termination of pregnancies beyond 24 weeks is to be done for fetuses having significant abnormalities and "feticide in this case is neither justified nor ethical as the fetus is grossly normal. Delhi HC extends Geeta Arora's suspension of sentence till next date
New Delhi [India], June 28 (ANI): The Delhi High Court on Friday extended the interim suspension granted to Geeta Arora alias Sonu Punjaban on health grounds till July 22. Her appeal against conviction is also pending. She is admitted to Mehta Hospital in Saket. Justice Renu Bhatnagar extended the interim suspension of sentence granted to Geeta Arora alias Sonu Punjaban till the next date as listed in the application, along with the main appeal for hearing on July 22. She has moved an application seeking extension of the interim suspension of sentence for a further 60 days on medical grounds. She is suffering from Human Papillomavirus (HPV), which is associated with the potential development of cancer. Her counsel submitted that she has been diagnosed with HPV (Human Papillomavirus), a high-risk viral infection associated with potential cancer development. It was further submitted that the appellant Sonu Punjaban is presently admitted in Mehta Hospital, Saket, New Delhi, for ongoing treatment. A status report has been filed by the Delhi police verifying the medical documents produced by Sonu Punjaban. Additional Public Prosecutor (APP) for the State submitted that the treatment the appellant getting is available at AIIMS. While in judicial custody, she was receiving treatment at AIIMS, which is a premier government medical institution. APP further submitted as per the medical prescription submitted by the applicant, she was advised to report for a follow-up consultation at AIIMS on May 26. However, to date, no follow-up medical record or prescription from AIIMS has been placed on record to demonstrate that the applicant complied with the said advice, APP added. It was also contended that the appellant was directed to surrender on June 21 at 5 PM. On June 20, she got herself admitted to Mehta Hospital, a private hospital, to avoid compliance with the surrender order. The medical prescription of her condition by the said hospital appears to be exaggerated, the prosecution said. Her sentence was suspended on May 19, which was extended from time to time by the court. She filed an appeal in 2020 challenging her conviction and sentence in a case related to the Immoral Trade Practices Act and other offences. (ANI)

UP deputy chief minister Brajesh Pathak on Friday shared that while Prayagraj may not be getting an AIIMS, preparations are underway to build a state-of-the-art hospital equipped with medical facilities equivalent to those available at AIIMS. UP deputy chief minister Brajesh Pathak in Prayagraj on Friday. (HT Photo) The Prayagraj Municipal Corporation has been designated as the nodal agency for this project, he shared, referring to the ambitious project of PMC to construct an ultra-modern super-specialty hospital in Naini. Addressing media persons at the District Panchayat auditorium after the conclusion of a mock parliament event commemorating 50 years since the Emergency, Brajesh Pathak said that the state government also plans to appoint superspecialist doctors at both Tej Bahadur Sapru (Beli) and Motilal Nehru Divisional (Colvin) hospitals of Prayagraj. The state government is working to fill 2,100 vacancies in the health department through a public recruitment drive. Of these, 532 doctors will be deployed to hospitals in the near future, he said. He highlighted that since 2017, Uttar Pradesh has seen remarkable improvements in both infrastructure and law and order. The state now ranks number one in the 'One District, One Product' (ODOP) initiative, he said. Referring to the Emergency imposed by the Congress in 1975, he stated that the country would never forget the injustices committed during that time, including the suppression of press freedom. He accused Congress of strangling the Constitution and described the party as power-hungry and misleading the public. Calling both Congress and the Samajwadi Party personality-driven outfits, he criticised their leadership styles. On the allegations against Dr Rashmi Verma, Chief Medical Officer of Gonda, he stated that action would be taken after reviewing the relevant documents. Regarding the incident involving religious speakers in Etawah, he said the matter has become a major challenge for the Samajwadi Party.

Here's What Exactly Helped This Student Crack NEET In The First Attempt
Satyam Singh, a determined student from Varanasi and the son of a retired army officer, has secured an impressive All India Rank (AIR) of 272 in NEET 2025. Speaking to NDTV Education, he shares his success mantras and preparation strategies that helped him crack one of India's toughest entrance exams. Which specialisation are you aiming for, and do you have a particular college in mind? As of now, I haven't finalised any particular specialisation. In terms of college preferences, I am looking at either one of the AIIMS - AIIMS Rishikesh-or IMS BHU. Can you walk us through your NEET preparation strategy? My strategy was centered around setting small, achievable daily and weekly goals. These helped me build consistent momentum toward the larger objective. The structured environment and guidance from my coaching institute were instrumental in maintaining this discipline. Each day, I began by revising the topics covered in class and completing the related practice sheets and assignments. I then reviewed the syllabus for upcoming tests. If time allowed, I also focused on board exam topics and subjects like English. Daily Practice Papers (DPPs), mock tests, recorded lectures, class notes, and performance tracking through the app made my preparation highly efficient. What were the key areas you focused on the most during your preparation? Consistency was my top priority. Staying away from distractions, which can be a major hurdle for students our age, also played a significant role in maintaining focus throughout. On average, how many hours did you study each day? I studied between 8 to 12 hours daily, depending on the day's schedule and intensity. Was this your first attempt at NEET? Yes, NEET 2025 was my first attempt. Which subjects or topics do you think are crucial for scoring well and securing a high rank? All three subjects - Physics, Chemistry, and Biology - are equally important. In order to score a good rank, Physics becomes a deciding factor for the majority of students. However, it may vary from person to person. What would you say to students who couldn't clear NEET this year? This year's paper was one of the toughest, with unpredictable changes in the pattern and difficulty level. Still, many students managed to perform well. It's essential to reflect on what went wrong, identify the gaps, and plan the next steps accordingly. Giving up is never the answer. What advice would you give to students struggling with stress, especially in high-pressure coaching environments? After spending two years in a competitive coaching environment, I've realised that constant comparison is a major stressor. Even if you're improving, comparing yourself with others - whether it's a classmate or topper - can lead to demotivation. Emotional support from family, mentors, or peers is significant. Also, practices like meditation or spirituality can help maintain mental balance. When do you think students should ideally begin preparing for NEET? The ideal time would be from Class 11 onwards. Starting early gives students ample time to understand the syllabus and build a solid foundation. Given the high cost of coaching, do you think NEET is still accessible to students from rural or economically weaker backgrounds? Yes, absolutely. While coaching can be expensive, some platforms like PhysicsWalla have made quality education more affordable. They offer comprehensive online content at minimal cost. Additionally, scholarship exams can help students access offline coaching too.
