What is BioEmu? Microsoft's New AI Breakthrough Decodes Protein Movements in Hours

Microsoft has introduced BioEmu, a powerful artificial intelligence tool that could revolutionize the way scientists study protein movement and structure. Traditionally, this kind of molecular analysis takes years of heavycomputation. Now, thanks to BioEmu, the same tasks can be done in a matter of hours.
Announcing the innovation on X (formerly Twitter), Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said the AI system can emulate the shifting forms proteins take—known as structural ensembles—which are key to understanding how diseases function and how drugs can be created to treat them.
Developed by Microsoft Research's AI for Science team, BioEmu version 1.1 demonstrates remarkable accuracy. It closely reflects real-world experimental data with prediction errors of less than 1 kcal/mol and correlation scores above 0.6 across large datasets. The AI was trained using more than 200 milliseconds of molecular simulation data, alongside half a million protein stability experiments and extensive structural information.
What makes BioEmu exceptional is its ability to detect subtle and rare changes in proteins—especially "cryptic binding pockets," which are hidden areas that could become future drug targets. This deep insight into protein behavior could be a game-changer for pharmaceutical development.
Unlike older systems that demand long-term GPU usage and intensive computing power, BioEmu provides rapid results while dramatically cutting costs and processing time. Microsoft Research highlighted that BioEmu mimics complex molecular movements such as domain shifts and local unfolding—both of which are essential for understanding how proteins work inside living organisms.
The results were published in the journal Science, presenting BioEmu as a generative deep learning model capable of replicating protein behavior both in labs and inside the human body. Experts believe this new tool could transform fields like drug design, synthetic biology, and medical research, giving scientists a major head start in identifying new treatments for diseases.

THE technology sector continues to lead the market in terms of mergers and acquisitions (M&A) globally, as companies adapt to swiftly changing technologies and focus on enhancing their capabilities and market share to access new profit opportunities. This is particularly relevant in the small and mid-cap segment, as these companies often attract acquisition interest from larger competitors. The size of what constitutes small and mid-cap in the technology market has grown significantly in the last decade, and comprises industry leaders within their segments. These companies play a critical role in the technology value chain and have a strong influence in the broader technology ecosystem. They possess robust intellectual property (IP) and talent, and can either grow independently or be acquired by larger entities seeking access to their IP. Over the years, we have seen multiple instances of acquisitions. Some notable examples include Microsoft's acquisition of LinkedIn in 2016; Nvidia's acquisition of Israeli semiconductor business Mellanox Technologies in 2019; and Microsoft's purchase of Activision Blizzard in 2023. Cisco's acquisition of cybersecurity leader Splunk in 2023/2024 is also a good example, where the former aimed to bolster its lagging security offerings through the acquisition. Encouragingly, M&A activity has continued in 2025 despite the challenging market environment, marked by geopolitical and regulatory uncertainties. We are observing a variety of acquisition proposals across industries such as food delivery, semiconductors and software, as overall industry structures evolve. We think this trend could continue to bolster the tech sector's returns over the long term. For example, industry consolidation and rationalisation continue to accelerate within the food delivery space, as fierce competition drives leading players to compete for scale and market position, while seeking to enter new regions through strategic acquisitions. Prosus aims to broaden its presence in the UK and Europe through JustEat, while DoorDash's acquisition of Deliveroo offers immediate access to nine new markets, including the UK, France, and the United Arab Emirates, where it currently has a limited presence. On the semiconductor front, companies are looking to make strategic IP acquisitions. For example, US chip-maker Qualcomm acquired UK-based Alphawave, a leader in high-speed connectivity IP, which is predominantly utilised in connectivity solutions for data servers and storage. Qualcomm intends to diversify its operations beyond smartphone chips and into artificial intelligence (AI) data centres and plans to leverage Alphawave's high-speed IP in its business diversification strategy. Attractive acquisition targets We also expect software companies to continue to be attractive acquisition targets. Leading cloud-based customer relationship management platform Salesforce acquired Informatica. The former aims to pivot towards data-related software following the recent success of its data cloud products. Informatica specialises in data integration, data management and data enhancement products, primarily for data analytics and reporting for enterprise customers. Salesforce's acquisition of Informatica will enhance its data cloud offerings by providing access to data housed in various enterprise systems, ultimately boosting its AI capabilities. Looking ahead, we expect M&A activity to remain an integral feature within the technology sector, as companies seek to strengthen their strategic positioning amid improving industry structures, rapid innovation and evolving competitive needs. While this should not be a core driver of investment decisions, such developments can serve as a meaningful source of upside for long-term investors. It is still important to focus on identifying long-term winners, such as those with strong businesses and solid fundamentals. Magnus Carlsen, the top-ranked chess player in the world, has once again demonstrated that he is at the top. But this time his opponent wasn't a grandmaster—it was an AI chatbot. ChatGPT, the popular AI in development by OpenAI, played an online game against Carlsen, who won in 53 moves. What made it even more remarkable is that he didn't lose a piece throughout the entire game. Carlsen posted screenshots of the game on social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter), with the tongue-in-cheek caption, "just a little bored during travel." The comment was a reminder of just how casually he took the match. Although the AI opened the game with some powerful plays, the machine could not keep pace with Carlsen's intuitive and sharp tactics. ChatGPT resigned and conceded the game. "All my pawns are gone. You haven't lost a single piece. You fulfilled your win condition perfectly... I resign. That was methodical, clean, and sharp." Post-match, Carlsen provided some advice to the chatbot. The Norwegian chess grandmaster said the early part of the game and the piece sacrifice were interesting ideas but the AI didn't follow through well. The grandmaster also asked ChatGPT to guess his chess rating based on the game, and the bot estimated he was about 1800–2000 FIDE, which we would consider beginner to intermediate. This could not have been further from the truth: Carlsen has a FIDE rating of 2839, which is one of the highest in the history of chess. With words escaping me, I will just let his rating tell the story, and in case you are wondering, the last time his rating was near 2000 was when he was the age of a beginner at chess... in 2001. Despite the loss, ChatGPT complimented Carlsen's excellence in the game. It praised his use of the Philidor Defense and his power-creating positional moves with ...Bf8 and ...Re8. It also observed his forceful play from ...Nf3+ and his endgame skills. Carlsen had played with precision and discipline to convert a small edge into a victory, the bot said. ChatGPT even mentioned that Carlsen spotted illegal moves fast, demonstrating his over-the-board experience as a real chess player. Carlsen has talked about AI in the past. He liked to mention that AI was exciting to start with because it let players try new ideas. But now, he said, he finds it harder to gain an advantage with AI because everyone has access to it.
