Karate gold medallist Muhammad Arif eyes 2026 Asian Games comeback after ACL surgery
The gold medallist in the men's 84 kilogramme kumite (sparring) event at the 2022 Hangzhou Asian Games is currently undergoing rehabilitation and is confident that he can make a stronger recovery in the next six months before his knee is fully healed in 10 months, according to the head coach.
'I suffered an ACL injury at the K1 Series A Championship in Salzburg, Austria after being taken down in the first round earlier this year and I have just undergone surgery for it.
'I am now focusing on physiotherapy and rehabilitation. Hopefully, I will come back stronger by next year,' he told Bernama at the Penang State Sports Awards 2023/2024 ceremony at the Amari Food Gallery near here today.
At the ceremony, the 26-year-old athlete was crowned Penang 2023/2024 Sportsman of the Year and received a trophy and cash prize of RM4,000 presented by state executive councillor for Youth, Sports and Health, Daniel Gooi Zi Sen.
Commenting on the recognition, Muhammad Arif described the award as a morale booster to continue striving for greater and more prestigious success on the international stage.
'I never thought I would be selected as the Sportsman of the Year because I was nominated before but didn't win. This year, I got it. I am grateful and very happy,' he said.
The 1.83-metre tall exponent also expressed his intention to continue his Masters studies in business or sports science in the near future.
For the record, Muhammad Arif created history when he won the Hangzhou Asian Games gold medal after defeating 2021 World Championship bronze medallist Daniyar Yuldashev from Kazakhstan 10-4 in the final.
Gold medal winner in chess at the 21st Malaysia Games (SUKMA Sarawak), Chua Jia Tien, was crowned Penang Sportswoman of the Year 2023/2024 and her father collected the award on her behalf.
Meanwhile, Gooi said the presentation of incentives this year involved 12 categories of major state sports awards including a new category introduced for the first time, which is the Deaf Sports Excellence Award.
He said the new award is dedicated to the deaf sports community in Penang and reflects the state's commitment to recognising the achievement of athletes from all walks of life despite physical disability, to instil an inclusive spirit in the development of state sports.
'This incentive is a sign of the state's appreciation for the hard work and commitment of the athletes, promoters and all state sports personnel in raising the prestige of Penang sports,' he said.
He also congratulated the state contingent whose medal tally of 41 gold, 45 silver and 53 bronze medals secured fourth place overall at the 21st SUKMA in Sarawak last year, which showed a 39 per cent progress compared to the 20th SUKMA where Penang had to settle for seventh place.
The gold medal winner for the chess event at the 10th Asia Pacific Deaf Games Championship (APDG) last year, Loo Pin Xie, 20, received the Deaf Sports Excellence Award. — Bernama

China's caretaker manager eyes East Asian Cup as start of new cycle
YONGIN, South Korea, July 6 (Xinhua) -- China's national men's football team caretaker manager Dejan Djurdjevic said on Sunday that he hopes the upcoming East Asian Cup will mark a good start for the team's new cycle, with new players coming into the roster. The 2025 EAFF E-1 Football Championship, also known as the East Asian Cup, will be held from July 7 to 16 in Suwon and Yongin of South Korea's Gyeonggi Province. China plays its first match against host South Korea on Monday. Speaking at the pre-match press conference, Djurdjevic said the East Asian Cup would offer his players a good competitive environment against Asia's top teams, such as Japan and South Korea. "Such strong opponents will fully test our players and show how our new team performs," he said. Facing a short preparation period, Djurdjevic said, "One of my relative advantages is that I coached China's Asian Games and U-19 teams before, and many players in this team were my students, so many of them are already well known to me." On June 27, the Chinese Football Association announced Djurdjevic's appointment as caretaker manager to lead the team in the East Asian Cup. Djurdjevic had previously coached China's men's Asian Games team in 2023 and was appointed head coach of China's U-19 men's team in January 2024. China forward Zhang Yuning said that with veteran players leaving, young players joining and a coaching change, the team is now undergoing a transitional phase, and hopes to take the East Asian Cup as an opportunity to strengthen their cohesion. "Our goal is definitely to prepare for the next World Cup and to build better teamwork. As a senior player, I will do my best to serve the team, try my best to play a bridging role, and help young players quickly fit into the team while creating more chances for them to demonstrate their talent," Zhang said.

Firos had no health issues, was scheduled to send son to KPTM in Bangi today, says wife
BALIK PULAU: Former Penang football goalkeeper Firos Mohamed, who passed away last night after reportedly collapsing during a four-corner Dr Zambry Abd Kadir Cup match at the Manjung Municipal Council Stadium in Perak, had no prior illnesses, including heart-related conditions. His wife, Fildaanis Mat, 51, said her 53-year-old husband was very active in football and currently served as a goalkeeping coach for the Penang Football Academy. "I, along with our children (three sons aged 18 to 29), accompanied him to the tournament because we wanted to watch him play at the stadium. According to our plan, today we were supposed to drop off our youngest son (Mohamad Fairiel Danish, 18) at Kolej Poli-tech Mara (KPTM) in Bangi, Selangor, to continue his studies in sports management there. "Yesterday, before the match, he didn't show any signs of discomfort; he just looked very enthusiastic, playing like a young man, especially when we were down 0-1 to the EX-Kedah team in the last quarter. Two minutes before the end of the match, he suddenly collapsed," she told reporters after Firos' burial at the Ridwaniah Mosque Muslim Cemetery, Sungai Batu, here on Sunday (July 6). Earlier, the body was bathed and shrouded before funeral prayers were held at the Kampung Melayu Surau in Air Itam. Over 100 people, including friends and family members, attended the burial ceremony, which concluded at 4:30 pm. Fildaanis said her family was still shocked by the incident, especially their youngest son, who rushed to the field after seeing his father collapsed. Mohamad Fairiel Danish even fainted after realising his father was unconscious on the field. "He never complained of any pain and had no serious illnesses. I was just struck by how he kept looking at my face these past few days, and the last time I saw him was when we were together on the bus from the hotel in Manjung to the stadium for the tournament," she said. Mohamad Fairiel Danish, although deeply saddened by his father's passing, said he needs to remain strong to continue his studies in sports education, as he aspires to become a sports teacher. "My father was very happy when he knew I would be pursuing studies in sports because he had always taken us to the field since we were young to watch him play, especially football," he said. Meanwhile, ExPenang team manager Mohd Azmi Ali, 57, said he and the deceased had been close for the past 20 years, having played together in the President's Cup team and the Penang Football team. "He was among the best goalkeepers in Penang and was once selected as one of six state players to represent Malaysia for a Barcelona Football Club training program in the 80s, besides being Malaysia's goalkeeper in the 90s," he said. Meanwhile, ExPenang team coach Radzuan Putah, 60, who is also a former Penang football player, said that during training last week, the deceased complained of chest pain but did not undergo further examination as he informed them he had recovered. "His death is a great loss to the football industry in Penang and the country," said Radzuan, who is also the President of the Penang Former Football Players Association. Earlier, several videos went viral on social media showing Firos collapsing while playing against a legendary team from Kedah before Manjung District Police Chief ACP Hasbullah Abd Rahman confirmed that Firos Mohamed died of a heart attack. – Bernama
