PETALING JAYA : In addition to having millions of followers on In addition to having millions of followers on social media , Amelia Henderson – the striking actress and host of Indian-Scottish heritage who frequently graces Malaysian big and small screens – hosts her own podcast, ' Studio Sembang '. Now, the Klang-born star of films such as 'Talentime', 'J2: J Retribusi', 'Pulau', and 'Blood Brothers: Bara Naga' is encouraging her fans and followers to embrace a healthy lifestyle through sports. Like many Malaysians, the older of two siblings has taken a liking to pickleball, the popular paddle activity that combines elements of tennis, ping-pong and badminton. 'I'm not really into going to the gym as it stresses me out. But when I play pickleball, I feel happy – I get to sweat and socialise, without even realising I'm actually exercising,' Henderson, 29, told FMT. Her interest in sports doesn't come out of nowhere: she previously hosted sports programmes on Astro SuperSport, and also covered the US Open in 2022. Henderson hopes Pickle Depot will become the go-to spot for those who wish to unwind and stay active. So, when the opportunity came about, she didn't hesitate to venture into setting up a pickleball court with four business partners, including her younger brother. Henderson describes Pickle Depot, located in a green lung in Sentul, Kuala Lumpur, as an 'oasis in the city'. 'When I first step foot into this space, I saw huge potential – not just for a business, but to build a healthy and active community,' said the actress, who began her career as a model in commercials before branching out into acting with the sitcom 'Keluarga Adam'. Coming to the big screen: 1992's Thomas Cup victory

National shuttlers Cheah Soon Kit and Rashid Sidek will serve as production advisers for the new sports biopic 'Sentuhan Wira'. (Bernama pic) KUALA LUMPUR : Decades after one of the most defining moments in Malaysian sports history took place at Stadium Negara, the national men's badminton team's 1992 Thomas Cup victory is set to hit the big screen. On July 2, producer Victory Pictures officially launched the film, titled 'Sentuhan Wira' ('Touch of a Hero'), in conjunction with the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) that will see Malaysian badminton legends Rashid Sidek and Cheah Soon Kit appointed as production advisers. The pair, who had been part of the national squad at the time, are also directly involved in the development of the script to ensure factual accuracy and convey the true spirit of the team's journey to victory. Rashid said the film won't simply be about badminton; rather, it will reflect the struggle, belief, and national pride of Malaysians. He described the film's production as an important platform through which the experiences of former players can be shared with the younger generation. It will also highlight the spirit of unity within the squad at the time. 'We want the current generation to feel what we experienced as players and to witness the strong patriotic spirit among us. Even though we came from different races, we still succeeded as one, for one purpose,' he said after the MoU signing witnessed by Finas chairman Hans Isaac. 'Yes, it has been been a long time – we've gone 33 years without winning the Thomas Cup. So, with the release of this film, we hope it will boost the spirit of our current players to become more motivated. 'What's more important is the spirit of patriotism – not individual glory, but the collective drive to bring honour to the nation,' Rashid added. Meanwhile, 'Sentuhan Wira' director Lenny Ooi said he will use an action-film approach in his direction style to emphasise realism in the training and competition scenes. 'Our actors must also be able to play badminton for real, otherwise, their movements will look too rigid,' he noted, adding that filming is expected to start at the end of the year, with a release slated for early 2027.

Lee Zii Jia pulls out of Japan Open, cryptic post fuels speculation

KUALA LUMPUR, July 7 — Malaysia's professional singles shuttler Lee Zii Jia has withdrawn from the 2025 Japan Open Badminton Championships, which will be held from July 15 to 20. The latest development was reflected on the Badminton World Federation (BWF) website, which stated that the 27-year-old player will not be competing in the tournament. However, no official statement has been issued by Team LZJ regarding his withdrawal. Zii Jia injured his ankle during the World Tour Finals last December and made his return in March at the Orleans Masters, where he lost to Ireland's Nhat Nguyen 21-23, 7-21 in the quarter-finals. He then competed in the 2025 All England Championships in Birmingham from March 11 to 16, where he was knocked out in the first round by Hong Kong's Angus Ng Ka Long, 21-19, 16-21, 12-21. The world number eight subsequently withdrew from the 2025 Swiss Open in Basel, Switzerland, held from March 18 to 23, due to the same ankle injury. Last Saturday, the National Sports Council (NSC) confirmed that Zii Jia is in good condition and that there is nothing to be concerned about regarding his cryptic social media sketches shared on Friday. NSC director-general Jefri Ngadirin said the council, along with Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh, had contacted Team LZJ to seek clarification over Zii Jia's actions. The cryptic post by Zii Jia has since garnered over 131,000 likes and more than 3,000 comments, sparking speculation over its meaning, including claims that he may be facing personal health or mental health issues. — Bernama
