Chiefs GM Brett Veach admits hard truth about Travis Kelce: ‘This might be it'

New York Post2 days ago
The Chiefs' front office knows Travis Kelce is chasing Father Time.
With the 35-year-old tight end preparing for his 13th season in the league after a statistically down year — 823 yards in 2024 compared to 984 in 2023, among other notable drops — Chiefs general manager Brett Veach told ESPN that even though Kelce is on the back nine, he still flashes when it matters most.
'We've all seen it over the last few years,' Veach said. 'There are periods throughout the season where you're like, 'This might be it.' But when the games are the most important and the lights are the brightest, he finds it somewhere.'

Kelce, embracing an even brighter glare of the spotlight in the wake of his relationship with Taylor Swift, was at the center of retirement chatter earlier this year after a quiet offensive season (three touchdowns versus five in 2023).

His 823 yards marked his career-low for a full season.
Then came Super Bowl 2025, when the defending champion Chiefs flopped on the biggest stage in a 40-22 loss to the Eagles.

Kelce put retirement rumors to bed a short time after and has been working out in Florida this offseason — with the support of Swift, 35.

'The great ones know how to find it,' Veach added of Kelce. 'They know where it's buried, and they know how to access it. And they can't access it at that age week in and week out, but when they need it, they know how to find it.'
Veach previously told The Post at the 2025 NFL Combine that Kelce ended the season 'fired up,' and the Chiefs believe he still 'has that fire and desire to play.'

Kelce still has one year left on his contract as the Chiefs look to build out their offense, which has dipped in production.
Kansas City averaged 22.7 points per game last season (12th-best) and 23.1 points in 2023 (14th-best), a drop from 29.2 in 2022 (best in the NFL) and 29.4 in 2021 (fourth-best).
The Chiefs face the rival Chargers in Brazil in Week 1.

Ex-NFL Star Ranks Top Eagles Coaches Since Andy Reid Era

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Being with the Philadelphia Eagles since 2010, Brandon Graham has played for four different head coaches. He caught on with Andy Reid during the veteran head coach's final few seasons in Philadelphia. Before Graham's fourth year, Reid parted ways with the Eagles and signed with the Kansas City Chiefs. Although the glory days were winding down, that didn't cause Graham to see the head coach in a different light after everything he went through with his own career. Recently listing his top Eagles head coaches, Graham placed Reid at the top. "I'm happy that I started with Coach Reid," Graham stated on 'Say What Needs to be Said,' with Asante Samuel. "He taught me really, how to be a pro, and how a coach should be like when you make a mistake. He was a guy that really moved on after he got on you." Beyond Reid, Graham was torn between Doug Pederson and Nick Sirianni. While he ultimately went with the former for the No. 2 spot, that's surely not a shot at the latter. "Doug was cool—just like Nick—it's Doug and Nick at the same time." Under Pederson, Graham got to experience his first NFC Championship run. After the Eagles defeated the Minnesota Vikings to advance to the Super Bowl, Pederson's Eagles faced the New England Patriots in Super Bowl LII. Graham famously forced a fumble on Tom Brady late in the game, which helped the Eagles increase their lead to the point where a field goal wouldn't cut it for New England on their final drive. While Sirianni received his fair share of criticism throughout his tenure in Philadelphia so far, Graham has remained fond of the head coach, who has helped lead the team to multiple Super Bowls. Graham's career finished with Sirianni in charge. Brandon Graham #55 of the Philadelphia Eagles looks on against the Atlanta Falcons at Lincoln Financial Field on September 16, 2024 in Philadelphia, no surprise, the veteran edge rusher placed the infamous Chip Kelly last on his list. While Kelly has been heavily criticized by former Eagles stars, Graham doesn't take the same exact stance, but he did have concerns. "I ain't have no beef, but I just didn't like some of the stuff he was doing with others because you see how other people get treated, even though you're not getting treated like that," Graham explained, regarding Kelly. "It was more like what other guys are getting treated like. It's just messed up when you see it like that because if I was a nobody, I would probably get treated like that too. I'm not saying that should matter, but you know how it goes in the real world. You watch people on how they treat other people, you think they don't need." Kelly's tenure as an NFL head coach struggled to hold up long-term after his run with the Eagles. The San Francisco 49ers got him a shot in 2016, but Kelly was let go after a 2-14 season, sending him back to the NCAA. After runs at UCLA and Ohio State, Kelly will make his way back to the NFL in 2025 as the Las Vegas Raiders' offensive coordinator. Bears and general manager Ryan Poles agree to contract extension through 2029, according to reports

CHICAGO (AP) — The Chicago Bears and general manager Ryan Poles have agreed to a contract extension through the 2029 season, multiple media outlets reported on Friday. The Bears are coming off a last-place finish in the NFC North. They are 15-36 in three years under Poles and have two double-digit losing streaks during his tenure. The Bears lost their final 10 games in 2022 while in a teardown mode as part of a franchise-worst 14-game slide, and dropped 10 in a row in 2024 before closing the season with a win at Green Bay. They fired Matt Eberflus on Nov. 29, a day after he mismanaged the clock at the end of a 23-20 loss at Detroit. Poles' biggest move as Chicago's general manager was when he traded the No. 1 pick in the 2023 draft to Carolina for receiver DJ Moore and the Panthers' first-rounder in 2024. They used it to take quarterback Caleb Williams at No. 1 overall. Williams' arrival helped spark a surge in optimism around Chicago a year ago. The Bears instead wound up being one of the biggest disappointments in the NFL. But they once again believe they are in position to start winning after another busy offseason. Poles made a huge splash when he hired coach Ben Johnson, the most sought-after candidate on the market after spending the past three seasons as the Lions offensive coordinator under Dan Campbell. He joined Detroit's staff in 2019 following a seven-year run as an assistant with the Miami Dolphins. The Bears are banking on his creativity and attention to detail to help Williams, a former Heisman Trophy winner, develop into a franchise quarterback. Hiring Johnson wasn't the only big move by Poles. The Bears acquired two-time All-Pro guard Joe Thuney from Kansas City and signed him to a two-year, $35 million contract extension. They also acquired guard Jonah Jackson from the Los Angeles Rams, signed center Drew Dalman and drafted Boston College tackle Ozzy Trapilo in the second round in an effort to protect Williams, who was sacked a franchise-record and league-leading 68 times. Poles didn't ignore the defense. The Bears added two-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle Grady Jarrett and edge rusher Dayo Odeyingbo. They also retained two key players by extending cornerback Kyler Gordon through 2028 and linebacker T.J. Edwards through 2027. ___
