In or out: Which fifth-year options were picked up from 2022 draft class
The May 1 deadline to decide on fifth-year options for the 2022 NFL draft class has come and gone. There were 31 of 32 selections that needed to be made.
Of the 32 teams in the NFL, only 19 of those franchises had options to exercise due to selecting the player in the 2022 draft or by trading for one of the 32 selections. Players who did not get their fifth-year club option picked up will become unrestricted free agents following the 2025 season.
What is a fifth-year option?
Per the collective bargaining agreement that was signed in 2020, teams can opt to exercise a fifth-year option on all rookie contracts for players selected in the fourth round. All other rookie contracts are four-year deals. The fifth-year option is a fully guaranteed contract based on four tiers per Over The Cap: Basic, playtime, a Pro Bowl selection, or multiple Pro Bowl selections.
In total, 19 fifth-year options from the 2022 NFL draft class were picked up, 12 options were declined, and one wasn't eligible. The full breakdown is as follows:

De Smith's upcoming book takes shots at Roger Goodell, Jerry Jones, Jeff Pash

Turf Wars, the upcoming book from former NFL Players Association executive director DeMaurice Smith, contains several blunt characterizations regarding some of the management folks with whom he did battle during his years on the job. Via Daniel Kaplan of the book has choice words for three of the folks he dealt with. Advertisement Smith describes Commissioner Roger Goodell as a "cold, dark void." As to Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, Smith says this: 'If Jerry Jones saw a dollar bill on the ground, I truly believe he'd stop and pick it up.' Then there's former NFL general counsel Jeff Pash. Smith calls Pash "definitely the most unscrupulous." "In a corporation filled with ruthless people, Pash has everyone else beat," Smith said. Ruthless or not, Pash gave life to the collusion grievance that was resolved earlier this year via a 61-page ruling by putting in writing things he should have discussed with Goodell verbally. The paper trail of emails from Pash to Goodell and Goodell to Pash made it clear that the NFL and the Management Council wanted the teams to collude when it comes to limiting guarantees in player contracts. Advertisement Turf Wars will be released on August 5. If/when we get an advance copy, we'll likely have plenty more to say about the contents of a book that seems to be far closer to scorched earth than smooched ass.

Tom Dempsey's legendary 63-yard field goal is the Saints Play of the Day

Dempsey's record stood for 43 years, led to multiple rules changes Our countdown to the New Orleans Saints' season opener is on Day 63, which means Tom Dempsey's legendary 63-yard field goal is an easy pick for the Saints Play of the Day. Last year, the Saints shared a great video feature on the play and the drama surrounding it from those who were on hand to see it. You can see it for yourself right here. Any Saints fan who inherited their team from the previous generation knows the story. Dempsey was born without toes on his right foot and kicked with a one-of-a-kind box-toed boot, which was later outlawed by the NFL. With the game on the line and only seconds left on the clock back in 1970, Dempsey won the day against the Detroit Lions with a field goal from 63 yards, setting a new NFL record. Dempsey's record stood for 43 years; his iconic kick led to several rules changes and wasn't surpassed until Matt Prater nailed a 64-yarder at altitude with the Denver Broncos. In 2021, Baltimore Ravens kicker Justin Tucker reset the record with a 66-yard field goal. Most importantly, Dempsey's field goal gave Saints fans something to brag about when they really needed it. The team lost a lot of games back in 1970 (and for most of the 1970's). They didn't have many Pro Bowlers or special moments, and that this one endured for so long only made it more memorable. We're grateful that brighter days came along, but we're still thankful Dempsey made that kick back in 1970, too.
