Shoshone-Paiute Tribes announces plans for casino between Boise, Mountain Home
The Shoshone-Paiute Tribes are developing their first resort and casino along Interstate 84 halfway between Boise and Mountain Home.
For decades, the Shoshone-Paiute Tribes were the only tribe in Idaho without revenue. But the proposed resort and casino is estimated to generate tens of millions of dollars annually for Idaho's economy and create thousands of regional jobs. The Shoshone-Paiute Tribes also plan to share 5% of their net gaming revenues to support local schools and education programs.
Shoshone-Paiute Chairman Brian Mason said in a press release he dreams of a future where tribal members have the resources, education, health care and employment opportunities they need to sustain their families and preserve their culture.
'Today, we have no meaningful economic opportunities and our community is facing some heavy challenges because of it,' Mason said. 'We want to solve our own problems and provide for our people. Tribal gaming will allow us to make these dreams into a reality.'
The tribes are partnering with the Coeur d'Alene Tribe, who has successfully run gaming operations in North Idaho for more than 30 years.
The Coeur d'Alene Tribe is providing a large upfront investment to help with the permitting and development process, and once it is built, the Tribe will enter into a management contract with the Shoshone-Paiute Tribes to help sustain the casino.
Coeur d'Alene Chairman Chief Allan said the tribe is honored to help its 'brothers and sisters' secure the same benefits they have experienced from gaming.
'When I was growing up, many tribal members lived in poverty and could not find jobs,' Allan said in the press release. 'Today, we have a state-of-the-art medical center, ample employment for tribal members and can financially support every tribal member who wants to earn a college degree. None of this would be possible without tribal gaming.'
Tribal gaming already contributes more than $1.4 billion of annual economic activity to the state, over $47 million in annual tax revenue and it sustains 12,500 Idaho jobs, according to a press release from the Shoshone-Paiute Tribes.
The Duck Valley Indian Reservation spans about 450 square miles in the southwest corner of Idaho, half split into parts of Nevada.
The tribes, according to the press release, face high rates of suicide and unemployment, and given its isolated location in the high desert, the Shoshone-Paiute community struggles to provide emergency services to its members.
Medical emergencies require lifesaving air transportation to Boise, which takes at least 45 minutes. A typical 911 call can take two hours to be answered because there are no tribal law enforcement officers exclusively dedicated to serving Duck Valley. Education funding is another major issue, and the school cannot attract enough certified teachers because of limited housing and other resources in the area, according to the press release
'The challenges we face daily are not insurmountable. We simply need resources to invest in long-term solutions for our people,' Mason said. 'Gaming will give us the tools we need to strengthen our community, grow our infrastructure and provide more opportunities to our youth for generations to come.'
The planned location is where the Shoshone-Paiute Tribes used to live, hunt and care for the natural resources. The planned casino will include gaming machines, luxury hotel rooms, a spa, entertainment center and fine dining options.
To build this project on tribal land outside of the reservation, the Shoshone-Paiute Tribes will follow the established process set out by the U.S. Department of the Interior and plan to submit their initial application later this year.

Australian state rolls out machete ‘disposal bins' ahead of ban
An Australian state has asked citizens to surrender machetes at disposal bins ahead of a statewide ban on the weapons aimed at combating knife crime. Australia's state of Victoria on Thursday announced that more than 40 machete disposal bins will be available at police stations across the state to allow citizens to safely get rid of the weapons without a penalty before the Sept. 1 ban begins. "Owning, carrying, using, buying, or selling a machete without a valid exemption or approval will be a criminal offense," the Victorian government said in a statement. The government is running a "Machete Amnesty" period from Sept. 1 to Nov. 30 to support the safe disposal of machetes. Those who do not surrender their machetes during the amnesty period may face imprisonment of up to two years or a fine of more than $47,000 AUD ($31,725 U.S. dollars). "These knives destroy lives – so we're taking them off the streets," Victoria Premier Jacinta Allan said in a statement. Victoria police have seized a record number of illegal knives from the streets, averaging at least 44 knives a day, Sky News Australia reported. Minister for Police Anthony Carbines said the government is backing Victoria Police to get the weapons out of the hands of young people to keep citizens safe. "Our message to anyone with these weapons is simple – get rid of them or face the consequences," Carbines said in a statement. Exemptions for those who can possess a machete include agricultural workers who use them as part of their job, along with machetes that are used in a traditional, historical or cultural capacity, according to the government. Individuals exempt must comply with strict conditions and be able to demonstrate eligibility if asked by police. The Victoria government said it had already issued a temporary ban on the sale of machetes in May, resulting in Amazon removing the weapons for purchase from its website.

People drowning in debt are turning to ChatGPT for help: ‘I need to do something about it'
Jenn Allan, a realtor from Delaware, found herself in a ton of debt a few years ago, but with the help of AI — she's managed to pay off half of it. She began posting her journey to being debt-free on her TikTok account @_jenn.allan, back in October 2024, but it wasn't until she turned to ChatGPT for help that her debt started to rapidly decrease. After enduring what she called a 'traumatic birth' back in 2023 that landed her daughter in the NICU, Allan quickly racked up $23,000 in credit card debt when she was forced to take a break from work due to severe postpartum depression, according to the Daily Mail. The mom sent the following prompt to the chatbot: 'I am in credit card debt, I don't know how much credit card debt I am in but I need to do something about it and I don't know where to start,' according to the outlet. Advertisement The bot suggested Allan organize herself by creating a 'debt repayment tracker in Google Sheets' to figure out how much money she was in the hole for. From there, every day for a month, she was to complete a new task to help her pay back some of the owed money. Breaking it down into a 30-day challenge also helps debt repayment seem less daunting, Allan said. Kittiphan – 'Some of the ideas actually made me money right away — and [overall it] kept me accountable every day,' she told the Daily Mail. It also provided her with meal ideas so she could cook at home more. After putting in the work with help from her trusty AI tool — the 35-year-old managed to pay off $12,000 of her debt, as of July 2025. And she isn't the only one following this method to become debt-free. Advertisement TikTok user @ shared in one of her videos that she has a goal to pay off $26,503 in debt in just 9 months, with the help of ChatGPT. 'Being debt-free is the dream. Being financially free is the dream and doing it as fast as possible is the goal,' she said in one of her videos. The content creator revealed that with a simple prompt to the chatbot, she has managed to already knock off over $2,000.
