Reckless driving in Limpopo: Two drivers arrested for excessive speeding

The Limpopo Department of Transport and Community Safety is taking strong action against reckless drivers. Two individuals were recently apprehended on the N1 near Bela-Bela for driving at dangerously high speeds of 198km/h and 199km/h in a 120km/h zone.
The two speedsters spent the weekend behind bars in Limpopo.
The department said two recent arrests are stark warnings that excessive speeding will not be tolerated.
'A 38-year-old male driver of a Volkswagen Golf hatchback was apprehended on April 27, 2025, for speeding at 198km/h in a 120km/h zone.
'A day earlier, a 29-year-old male driver was caught speeding at 199km/h in a Renault Clio hatchback on the same stretch of road,' the department said.
Both drivers spent the night in custody before bail was granted.
'Think twice if you think you can outrun the authorities on the roads. Law enforcement officers are cracking down on speeding motorists, and it's time to hit the brakes,' the department said.
'Speeding is a leading cause of road fatalities.'
Meanwhile, Transport Minister Barbara Creecy released the Easter season road safety report, following their Easter road safety campaign, which started on March 20.
The law enforcement performance during the Easter period, April 17-21, is as follows: 177 584 vehicles were stopped and checked.
44 505 traffic fines were issued.
2 018 vehicles were discontinued.
1 536 vehicles were impounded.
941 drivers were arrested for drunk driving.
89 drivers were arrested for excessive speeding.
12 pedestrians were arrested for jaywalking.
Eight drunk drivers were arrested for attempting to bribe officers.

Image: SAPS Two additional suspects have been apprehended for the brutal murder of the Limpopo mother, aged 34, and her two-year-old daughter. On Saturday, IOL reported that the two went missing in May, sparking an extensive search. On Friday, police conducted an operation at Hlabeni, under the Saselamani policing area, and arrested a 55-year-old man. 'Further police investigations led the (police) members to the residence of a 38-year-old traditional healer at Muraga village under the Thohoyandou precinct. The traditional healer was allegedly found in possession of the missing heads of the two victims and was also placed under arrest,' said provincial police spokesperson, Colonel Malesela Ledwaba. It is reported that on Wednesday, police followed a credible lead which led to the discovery of the bodies of the mother and her daughter. The duo was remanded in custody, and the matter was postponed to 12 August for further investigation. Meanwhile, two other suspects aged 55 and 38, are set to appear before the Thohoyandou Magistrate's Court on Monday, facing charges of murder. Furthermore, police said a charge of possession of human tissue will be added against the 38-year-old man, the traditional healer. Police have also established that one of the arrested suspects is alleged to be the boyfriend of the deceased woman. 'The motive behind this heinous act of crime is still under investigation,' said Ledwaba. Meanwhile, provincial commissioner of police in Limpopo, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, has welcomed the arrests, and she saluted the investigating teams 'for their remarkable skill' which resulted in the tracking down of the alleged killers. Murder of court officials: Parliament expresses grave concern, seeks to engage NPA

Image: Facebook Chairperson of Parliament's portfolio committee on justice and constitutional development, Xola Nqola, has expressed outrage at the cold-blooded murder of public prosecutor Tracy Brown in Gqeberha, Eastern Cape. IOL reported on Friday that the murder of the female public prosecutor in front of her child and partner has been described as an attack on the rule of law. Tracy Brown, a regional court prosecutor, was shot and killed in front of her house at Lotton Street, Young Park in Gqeberha on Thursday after four men alighted from a white Polo vehicle and fired multiple shots at her vehicle. Nqola said protectors of the justice system in South Africa are not safe. 'This is indeed a tragedy where the protectors of our criminal justice system are not safe anymore. This is unacceptable and no stone should be left unturned to bring the culprits to book,' he said. According to reports, Brown was ambushed and shot multiple times by four armed assailants while sitting in her car, in full view of her partner and child. 'The brutal nature of this assassination-style killing is deeply disturbing and represents a direct attack on the justice system and those who serve it with dedication and courage,' he said. This incident follows the tragic murder of Elona Sombulula, a court official at the Engcobo Magistrate's Court, in April. The parliamentary committee is 'gravely concerned' by what appears to be a pattern of targeted violence against officials within the justice sector. 'The murder of Ms Brown is not only a devastating loss to her family and colleagues, but an attack on the rule of law in South Africa. Prosecutors serve at the forefront of our fight against crime and corruption. When they are targeted, it threatens the foundations of our constitutional democracy. 'The committee sends its heartfelt condolences to Ms Brown's loved ones and colleagues during this painful time. The committee also calls on law enforcement agencies to prioritise the investigation and ensure that those responsible are swiftly apprehended and face the full might of the law.' Nqola said the portfolio committee will engage with the Department of Justice and the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) on urgent measures to enhance the safety and security of prosecutors and court officials across the country.

'His ideologies are highly problematic': Criminologist on Police Minister Firoz Cachalia

Image: Kamogelo Moichela/IOL Professor Firoz Cachalia was officially sworn in as South Africa's new police minister on Friday, wading into the turbulent waters of law enforcement. Cachalia's first day in office followed the dramatic departure of his predecessor, Senzo Mchunu, who was placed on special leave last month amid allegations from KwaZulu-Natal provincial police commissioner, Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi. IOL reported that President Cyril Ramaphosa presided over Cachalia's swearing-in ceremony at the Union Buildings, an event also attended by national police commissioner, General Fannie Masemola. Speaking to IOL, renowned criminologist Professor Kholofelo Rakubu voiced her concerns about the timing of Cachalia's appointment, citing the "confusion" at the top of the crime-fighting body. "It is his first day in office amid the technicalities of having two ministers of police. It becomes very difficult for a minister in a confusing era," said Rakubu, who is the head of the Tshwane University of Technology's Department of Law, Safety and Security Management. "The current debacle and the commission of inquiry make matters worse. He might struggle to grasp the magnitude of issues in the SAPS and justice cluster at large." Rakubu was particularly critical of Cachalia's policy stance on the use of force, arguing that his public opposition to the "shoot to kill" approach could embolden criminals. "Prof Cachalia's ideologies are highly problematic. Particularly his views where he speaks against the use of force when effecting arrests," she said. "How so, when South Africa's criminals are heavily armed and ready to shoot? He lacks understanding of the ambiguities and inconsistencies in the Criminal Procedure Act of 1977, particularly Section 49." 'I am not going to second-guess police officers when they are in the field, when they have to deal with violent criminals," he said. Cachalia emphasized the importance of a lawful approach by the police officers, referencing past incidents of police brutality that had led to national outrage. Cachalia cited both events, adding that they should make the country think carefully about the abuse of policing power.
