Netflix sets ‘Nouvelle Vague' for an awards season release: Everything to know about Richard Linklater's tribute to French filmmaking

Yahooa day ago
Richard Linklater's Nouvelle Vague, a cinematic homage to Jean-Luc Godard and the birth of the French New Wave, is officially arriving this awards season. After earning an 10-minute standing ovation at Cannes this year, the black-and-white period drama will debut in theaters on Oct. 31, before streaming on Netflix starting Nov. 14. Here's everything to know about the upcoming film.

Guillaume Marbeck stars as Godard, capturing the auteur during the frenzied 23-day production of his debut film Breathless. Zoey Deutch plays American actress Jean Seberg, delivering a performance already being buzzed about for awards consideration. Aubry Dullin portrays Jean-Paul Belmondo, one of the key figures of the French New Wave. The cast is rounded out by portrayals of Francois Truffaut, Claude Chabrol, Eric Rohmer and Jacques Rivette, prominent contemporaries in Godard's creative orbit.
WHO'S BEHIND THE SCENES?
Five-time Oscar nominated Linklater (Before Sunrise, Boyhood), directs his first French-language feature and his first Cannes Competition entry since Fast Food Nation (2006). The film is written by Holly Gent, Laetitia Masson and Vincent Palmo Jr. Netflix acquired U.S. rights for a reported $4 million making it one of the most expensive Cannes deals for a foreign-language film. Shot entirely in black-and-white and framed in 4:3 aspect ratio, the film blends vintage French aesthetics with Linklater's signature emotional depth and narrative clarity.
During a Cannes press conference for the film in May, Linklater said: "'I felt like I was 28 years-old making this film. I had to erase my experience and get back to my first film mentality. [Making this movie] was like going back in time.'
WHAT IS THE PLOT?
Nouvelle Vague is a reimagining of the 1959 shoot of Breathless, Godard's debut and a cornerstone of modern cinema. The film dives into the artistic revolutionary choices and the chaos behind the scenes and takes viewers to the streets of Paris in 1959 and examines the relationships among a generation of filmmakers on the cusp of global influence. With jump cuts, handheld cameras, voiceovers and a referential tone, Nouvelle Vague invites viewers into the birth of a revolution in filmmaking.
AWARDS CHANCES?
Netflix is planning a full campaign, including pushes for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay as well as for its stars Deutch, Marbeck and Dullin.
It still remains to be seen if the will be submitted by France as its Best International Feature Oscar entry. The film qualifies in nearly every respect (French financing, location, language, and cast) despite having an American director and lead actress. Netflix has a track record for international Oscar winners like Roma and All Quiet on the Western Front, positioning Nouvelle Vague as a serious contender.

SPLINTER CELL Series Creator Derek Kolstad Explains Why Sam Fisher Is 'Not the Best' — GeekTyrant

Netflix's upcoming animated series Splinter Cell: Deathwatch is bringing back stealth icon Sam Fisher, but not exactly the way longtime fans might expect. Series creator Derek Kolstad, the writer behind John Wick and Nobody , recently opened up about his approach to the character, and he doesn't see Sam Fisher as ultimate ghost operative. Kolstad told Den of Geek: 'One of the things that I like about Sam Fisher, John Wick, and Hutch Mansell [from Nobody] is that, yes, they're pretty badass at what they do but, more importantly, they're not the best. They get beat up.' That an interesting outlook considering Fisher's reputation as one of gaming's most elite covert agents, but Kolstad seems intent on making him more grounded and vulnerable. This means that Deathwatch might lean toward a grittier, hands-on style similar to Splinter Cell: Conviction , rather than the purely shadow-driven approach from the original trilogy. In the early games, Fisher was a master of infiltration, relying on high-tech gadgets and his iconic night vision goggles to ghost through missions without leaving a trace. Kolstad went on to explain: 'You look at the games, and he's incredibly adept and comfortable at tech, but sometimes a bullet or a blade or the ripping out of some cord is your best line of defense.' That philosophy hints at a Fisher who isn't invincible, and whose fights might be a little more brutal and desperate this time around. But Kolstad believes the heart of the character remains the same. 'I always loved the world of Splinter Cell. I'm a huge fan of army-of-one [stories] if you do it right. And yet, even though he's had hard decisions to make, it's just refreshing that Sam Fisher's a hero. 'He has moments of empathy and having to do this thing when both decisions are wrong, but one is a little less wrong at the cost of his soul and his own personal life, but for the benefit of the rest of us.' Splinter Cell: Deathwatch will feature Liev Schreiber as the voice of Sam Fisher, stepping into the role long held by Michael Ironside. The series made its first appearance at the Annecy Festival, where director Guillaume Dousse revealed some of the visual and tonal inspirations for the show, citing Ghost in the Shell , Ozark , and even elements of Mission: Impossible . Producer Hugo Revon added: 'It was interesting to have this aging character, not totally like the Tom Cruise version but more realistic, and more weathered by life.' The series is set to hit Netflix in late 2025, joining the platform's growing roster of video game adaptations like Castlevania and the upcoming Devil May Cry series. Meanwhile, fans are still waiting on that elusive Splinter Cell remake, which Ubisoft teased years ago but hasn't delivered any meaningful updates on. So, how do you feel about a Sam Fisher who isn't the best at what he does?

Euronews Culture's Film of the Week: 'Jurassic World Rebirth' – A dino-mite return to form?

While the last few years have been characterised by movie lovers rightfully moaning about superhero fatigue, there is another cinematic ailment that has also taken hold: dino-fatigue. Symptoms include dejected sighs triggered by recalling the lucrative but utterly pants 2015 – 2022 Jurassic World trilogy; the sudden urge to curse Colin Trevorrow's name; and wanting to punch Chris Pratt in his perfect face every time you remember scenes of him holding up the palm of his hand to somehow communicate with raptors. It was high time for someone to step in and give the series the much-needed renaissance it deserved. Enter: Gareth Edwards, whose arresting debut Monsters, ambitious 2014 reboot of the Godzilla franchise and excellent Star Wars prequel Rogue One proved the British filmmaker has the chops to orchestrate a tense thrill ride. More than that, he's not a director who bends under the weight of an existing IP and its accompanying high expectations. Except, in the case of this seventh dinosaur instalment, he stumbles by only delivering everything you'd expect. And not a hell of a lot else. Jurassic World Rebirth picks up after the events of 2022's Jurassic World Dominion. Humans have been forced to co-exist with dinosaurs, and after a few years, everyone's also experiencing dino-fatigue. We see this early on when a billboard depicting T-Rexes gets painted over – a plot point, but also an apt metaphor for the Jurassic franchise as a whole. We meet Martin Krebs (Ruper Friend), a slimy Big Pharma bugger who enlists the services of Special Ops expert Zora Bennett (Scarlett Johansson), soldier of fortune Duncan Kincaid (Mahershala Ali) and palaeontologist Henry Loomis (Jonathan Bailey). They are tasked with retrieving biomaterial samples from the three largest remaining dinosaurs: the aquatic Mosasaurus, the avian Quetzalcoatlus, and the land-locked Titanosaurus. Krebs believes that their DNA holds the key to the development of a medical drug capable of curing cardiac disease. How that works, we have no idea. Something about haemoglobin needing to be extracted from living dinos. Anyway, it's going to make him and his company millions. The snag is that these creatures have struggled with the climate and now reside near the equator line, in remote locales reminiscent of the environments where they flourished during the Mesozoic era. So it's off to the dangerous Ile Saint-Hubert they go – where they'll also rescue the shipwrecked Delgado family, whose boat came under attack from a pack of pesky Mosasaures. Despite Gareth Edwards excellent direction, some nifty staging of CG set pieces and a handful of spectacular sequences – chiefly the riverbed encounter with a dozing T-Rex – Jurassic World Rebirth comes off as more of a nostalgic legacyquel than a rejuvenating fresh start. There's nothing wrong with loving Steven Spielberg's 1993 original, but when your reboot feels like a greatest hits compilation rather than its own thing, something's gone wrong somewhere. Worse, original Jurassic Park screenwriter David Koepp – who wowed us this year with and – returns to tick off all the staples expected from a dino romp (breathless chases, nail-biting close calls) but also lumbers his script with eye-rollingly poor exposition, ear-scraping dialogue, a lunatic focus on candy (don't ask), and some very generic characters that only serve as dinosaur fodder. It's genuinely baffling how this feels like a first draft treatment rather than a fully formed ready-to-shoot script – one which should have relegated the Delgado family plotline to the cutting-room floor. Granted, the addition of audience surrogates makes sense, but the hapless family just slows down what should have been a down-to-basics three-part quest. In Jurassic World Rebirth's defence, the obviously rushed production schedule probably didn't help. But much like our qualms with F1® The Movie, everything has to start with a decent script. Had the studio spent a bit more time polishing the screenplay instead of securing an admittedly impressive all-star cast and pushing for a Summer 2024 release slot, this could have been dino-mite. As it stands, Jurassic World Rebirth honours the magic of Spielberg's gamechanging blockbuster but downgrades what could have been a daring revival to a passably entertaining regurgitation. is out in cinemas now.
