IIT-Patna welcomes record 783 new students at 3-day induction

Patna: Indian Institute of Technology-Patna (IIT-P) on Friday welcomed a record number of 783 newly admitted students, including 161 girls, on its campus on the first day of their three-day orientation programme.
The aim of the three-day event is to familiarise them with the academic environment, co-curricular activities, campus resources and institutional support systems available at IIT-Patna.
Admitted through JEE (Advanced) 2025, the students, along with family members, turned up on the campus from different states, with pride and enthusiasm writ large on their faces.
Addressing the newcomers, Indian Oil Corporation Ltd (IOCL)'s director (R&D) Alok Sharma, who was the chief guest on the occasion, said that students joining this institution deserve all encouragements from the society as they have achieved this success through a cut-throat competition.
He encouraged them to maintain a positive attitude and take proactive steps towards success in life.
Welcoming the students and their parents on the campus, IIT-P director T N Singh said that there is no shortcut to success and hence students must pursue their studies with patience and positive attitude. "You must keep learning continuously and prepare yourself well to face the challenges in life boldly. Commas and semicolons are always there in life, but full stops are never acceptable," he said.
Dean of administration-cum-registrar A K Thakur highlighted IIT-Patna's legacy as a modern centre of learning equipped with cutting-edge facilities. "We uphold ancient traditions of scholarship while embracing modern technology for the holistic development of our students," he said.
Sushant Kumar, associate dean for undergraduate studies, briefed students about the academic roadmap ahead and elaborated on the wide array of learning opportunities offered by the institute.
In course of the next two days of their orientation, the students will participate in interactive sessions and campus visits, exposing them to the academic departments, laboratories, central library, students' activity centre, career development resources, and sports and wellness facilities.

Northeast Frontier Railway inks pacts for sustainable projects in Guwahati
Guwahati, Aug 2 (PTI) Northeast Frontier Railway on Saturday said it has signed separate agreements with different organisations, including IIT-Guwahati and Assam Pollution Control Board, for projects related to sustainability. A tripartite agreement was signed among NFR, Assam Pollution Control Board (APCB) and Kusum Udyog to develop Guwahati Railway Station into a 100 per cent plastic recycling hub. A dedicated six-member task force led by the Station Superintendent, Guwahati, has been constituted to steer the initiative, a statement said. 'Efforts include improving garbage storage infrastructure, operationalising a compost-making plant and organising frequent passenger awareness drives," it said. The second agreement signed with IIT-Guwahati focuses on the introduction of biodegradable and compostable bags to replace the existing packets used for bedroll distribution in AC coaches. 'The pilot will begin with the Brahmaputra Mail operating between Kamakhya and New Delhi with plans to scale the same initiative across all Guwahati and Kamakhya-based trains, and eventually to the entire NFR network," the statement said. This initiative merges collaborative research with field-level implementation, targeting a shift towards eco-friendly and passenger-conscious alternatives, it added. 'By integrating environmental sustainability into its operational framework, NFR continues to lead in creating a cleaner and greener railway ecosystem for the zone," NFR Chief Public Relations Officer Kapinjal Kishore Sharma said. Over 50% engineering seats still vacant in MP after two rounds of counselling
Indore: Despite two rounds of centralised counselling, more than half of the engineering seats in Madhya Pradesh are remain vacant, with only 32,700 students admitted so far out of a total of 73,525 seats available across the state. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now This amounts to just about 45% occupancy, raising concerns about declining interest in engineering courses or increasing competition from other professional streams. However, directorate of technical education (DTE) claims this year's response is comparatively better, with nearly 10,000 more admissions recorded than at the same stage last year. This is the first time in recent years that DTE began its engineering admissions as early as May. The registrations for the first round began on May 27. The second round of counselling opened for registration between July 5 and 12. The merit list was released on July 17, followed by allotment letters from July 21 to 25. Students were allowed to complete the admission formalities until July 28. Those admitted were eligible for internal branch sliding within their colleges till July 31. The next phase, college level counselling (CLC), will begin on Aug 2 and continue till Aug 5, with admission closing on Aug 6. If seats remain vacant, a second and third CLC round will follow on Aug 7 and Aug 12, respectively. Following the allotment, several students rushed to their assigned colleges to confirm admission. Of the total registrations, 31,372 students applied via JEE (Main) scores, and 8,792 through Class 12 marks. So far, 33,371 candidates have been verified, including 5,869 through e-verification. Despite 376 rejections, 21,957 candidates completed choice filling. In Indore, 23 engineering colleges are participating in the centralised counselling process, offering over 15,000 seats. The DTE has structured admissions into two centralised rounds and three CLC rounds.

Govt. NEET coaching classes to cover all 13 blocks in Madurai
Following the success of government-offered free NEET coaching classes which have yielded good results, the NEET classes are to be expanded to all the blocks in the district. Madurai district with 13 blocks, from the current academic year, will have a weekly NEET coaching class with all necessary facilities like study materials, daily exercises, personal guidance, among others in all the blocks, said S. Vennila Devi, district coordinator for government-sponsored NEET training. She added, 'Unlike previous years when the teachers would be appointed as volunteers, hereafter, the government school teachers who are willing to take weekly Saturday classes will be given a remuneration.' This would not only encourage more teachers to take up the task but would also help them in self-development, she added. As the programme falls under Naan Mudhalvan scheme, all the necessary study materials, daily and weekly test exercises would be taken care by the School Education Department, Ms. Vennila noted. While the classes were earlier provided in only three centres – Tirumangalam, Othakadai and Melur – in the district, by further decentralising it, more students from remote areas are believed to step up for taking up the classes, she observed. She said that in addition to NEET and JEE coaching, training for eight other competitive exams is to be provided to the students. As Madurai district has already witnessed an improvement in the number of students clearing NEET this year, by further expanding the training, chances of more students taking up the examination and more students clearing it in the upcoming years are high, she noted. In the recent NEET UG counselling, about seven government school students have secured admission in medical colleges under the 7.5% reservation, she pointed. C. Snega, who has secured admission in Madurai Medical College in her third attempt by scoring 487 marks, said that though she took training in private coaching classes, for two years before clearing it, the motivation came from the training offered through the district administration. 'I scored 192 in first attempt, 445 in second attempt and 487 in the final attempt. I did not even think that I would score close to 200 in first attempt, thanks to the one-year coaching provided by the schoolteachers,' she added. As she aims to specialise in cardiology, she said the strong foundation she developed through her training would help her come out with flying colours.
