Nunavut declares yearslong tuberculosis outbreaks over
Two outbreaks of tuberculosis (TB) in Nunavut have been declared over after a yearslong public health battle.
Announced Thursday, the territorial Department of Health (DoH) wrote in a pair of news releases that following community-wide efforts to test, treat and monitor those impacted, case and contact tracing is now complete, treatments have been provided and the risk of transmission is low enough in the affected communities to end the advisories.
Outbreaks first began in November 2021 in the community of Pangnirtung, south of Auyuittuq National Park on Baffin Island. A second outbreak was declared more than a year later and roughly 850 kilometres to the northwest along the island's northern coast at Pond Inlet.
The DoH reports that in Pangnirtung, 47 cases of active tuberculosis and a further 225 new latent or 'sleeping' were diagnosed. In Pond Inlet, 13 active and 117 latent cases were uncovered.
'While the outbreak is over, TB continues to be present in Nunavut and across Canada,' one release reads. 'We encourage community members to remain aware of TB symptoms and continue to support one another in seeking care.'
Tuberculosis is a respiratory infection caused by bacteria that can spread through coughing, sneezing and speaking. Latent cases of the condition are asymptomatic and non-infectious, according to DoH, but may develop into an active case if left untreated.
DoH notes that common symptoms of tuberculosis include a bloody or persistent cough lasting more than three weeks, fatigue, appetite loss, unexplained weight loss and nighttime fever and sweating. Those with symptoms are advised to visit their health-care provider for screening as soon as possible.
Without treatment, an active case of tuberculosis may be fatal.
'TB is a treatable disease with medications available within your community,' the release reads. 'If you have any questions, please contact your local health centre.'
The department thanked both communities for their 'cooperation and dedication' throughout the public health response, which it described as 'essential in helping to stop the spread of TB and safeguard the health of the community.'

'That transplant resulted in her donor donating to another individual who's a veteran in California, and that veteran was also difficult to match,' said Kidneys for Communities CEO Atul Agnihotri. Clayson's recovery was about 10 weeks before he returned to work. 'I was out to save one person, and it was just icing on the cake,' said Clayson, when finding out he helped get two others a kidney. Kidneys for Communities says about 100,000 people in Canada and the U.S. are currently on a waitlist for a kidney donation. They generally spend between five and seven years seeking out a donation, but many die on dialysis before a transplant can take place. 'We know that one out of every three patients who has a donor does not match their donor, meaning that they have a willing donor, but they will die in absence of finding a kidney for themselves,' said Agnihotri. Clayson will be honoured during the Calgary Stampede's Homegrown Heroes Night on July 7. 'All I can see in this thing happening at the ceremony is that it'll bring about more awareness for the need that is out there,' said Clayson. 'Because even if it resonates in the heart of even several people to donate, it'll be worth it.' Clayson says he has one message for anyone thinking of donating. 'We have to overcome our fear. There's a lot of fear attached to becoming a donor, whether it be a liver donor or a kidney donor, because we're afraid for our own health,' he said. 'But I can honestly say my health has not been affected in any way.'

Dog mauled by bear recovers with new owner: B.C. SPCA

SPCA is urging pet owners to keep their dogs on leash when in heavily forested areas after a dog had a particularly nasty encounter with a bruin. According to the animal welfare agency, the dog, now named Rocky, was transferred to Vancouver from northern B.C. to undergo 'desperately needed' treatment after he was mauled by a bear and suffered injuries to the right side of his neck. When he arrived it had been evident from his injuries and his thick, weathered coat that he had endured a tough, neglected, life outdoors, said the release. 'Rocky came into the B.C. SPCA's care with an enormous, dreadful wound on his neck that was badly infected because of a lack of veterinary care,' said Mandy Isaacs, assistant manager of the Vancouver animal centre. Rocky was sedated and the large, gaping wound on his neck was cleaned and treated, with the damaged tissue removed. During treatment, veterinary staff conducted X-rays that revealed an old jaw fracture that had begun healing on its own. 'I sat down with him and petted him, gave him a few treats, and we just had this instant connection. I had to bring him home.' According to the B.C. SPCA, Rocky confidently jumped into the backseat of Sarah's car 'as if he had been doing it for years,' and travelled with her to his new home – a sanctuary with a sprawling backyard. Sarah has continued to care for Rocky's neck wound and has been helping him return to food in light of his jaw injury, but for the most part, she says, he is settling in the home without any qualms. 'It only took him two days to be comfortable,' said Sarah, describing her rescued pup as a 'lovely, superstar dog.' 'We were shocked it happened that quickly. He claimed his bed right away.' Earlier this year Sarah and her family had lost their cattle dog, a Shar pei mix called Buddy, and the introduction of Rocky has done a great deal in helping her heal, she said. 'I missed his company desperately when I was gardening. He used to sit beside me and keep me company. I think Rocky is going to be a great little helper for me, just like Buddy was,' she says. While Rocky's recovery and life post-accident has been positive, the B.C. SPCA warns that this isn't always the case and the incident should serve as a reminder of the importance of ensuring dogs are kept restrained in areas where there could be a run-in with a bear. 'If you are going hiking or walking in forested areas, keep dogs leashed, not only to keep them safe from bears but also to avoid conflicts with other wild animals' said the B.C. SPCA's specialist in wild animal welfare, Nadia Xenakis. 'If you live in bear country, always check for visitors before letting dogs outside.'
