Time of India16 hours ago
New Delhi: Two former
Congress
ministers, who switched sides ahead of the Lok Sabha polls last year and won assembly elections on
BJP
tickets earlier this year, were rewarded and made chairpersons of two separate development boards.
Raj Kumar Chauhan, who won from his traditional seat of Mangolpuri, was made the chairperson of the Delhi Village Development Board. Gandhi Nagar MLA Arvinder Singh Lovely was made the chairperson of the Trans Yamuna Development Board. Sources said the decision was taken in the cabinet meeting, chaired by chief minister Rekha Gupta, earlier this week, and a gazette notification is likely to be issued soon. The other members of the boards will be nominated by govt.
The cabinet decisions mentioned that the two boards will advise govt on issues related to infrastructure development in those areas.
Their appointment to the boards marks their return to govt after a gap of 12 years.

Lovely was made a minister by then chief minister Sheila Dikshit in 2003. He held several important portfolios during his 10 years in office, including education, transport and revenue.
Chauhan, who was brought into the cabinet by Dikshit in a reshuffle in 2001 during her first term as CM, remained a minister for 12 years and held PWD , irrigation and flood control, and revenue portfolios.

Both bring with them vast experience in governance, which will come in handy while working as the chairpersons of the village development board and Trans Yamuna Development Board, respectively.
Lovely quit Congress in protest against the alliance with AAP in the Lok Sabha polls in 2024 and joined BJP.
Chauhan left Congress after he was denied a Lok Sabha ticket in 2024. This was the second time for both Lovely and Chauhan to join BJP.
The Gandhi Nagar MLA joined BJP in May 2017 but returned to Congress in Feb 2018, saying he was a "misfit" in the saffron party. Chauhan left Congress in May 2019 but returned within a few months.
Both Lovely and Chauhan played significant roles in mobilising voters in favour of BJP in the Lok Sabha polls last year and the assembly elections earlier this year. While Lovely holds sway among voters in east and north-east Delhi and among the Sikhs, Chauhan is a well-known face among scheduled castes, besides being a popular politician in outer Delhi.
Lovely won four consecutive assembly polls in 1998, 2003, 2008 and 2013, and lost in 2015 and 2020, before getting elected again in 2025, this time on a BJP ticket. Chauhan also won four consecutive elections between 1993 and 2008. He lost the 2013 and 2015 elections and got re-elected again in 2025.
Their political acumen and administrative experience are considered a major asset for BJP and Delhi govt. Sources said both were accorded the status of cabinet ministers.

RG Kar rape-murder victim's parents urge all political parties, except TMC, to join them for August 9 rally to mark daughter's first death anniversary

The parents of the R G Kar Medical College rape-murder victim Sunday said they are reaching out to various political parties, except the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC), to join the August 9 Nabanna Abhijan, a march to the West Bengal secretariat, demanding justice for their daughter on her death anniversary. Talking to The Indian Express, the victim's father said, 'We want every person of this state to join us in the rally to demand justice. We have also visited all political parties, be it the BJP, the Congress, the Left, Socialist Unity Centre of India (SUCI), and Sangrami Joutha Mancha. They can all join us without their party flags or banners. This is an apolitical rally for my daughter and for all those daughters who have not got justice.' The postgraduate trainee doctor was found raped and murdered in a college building last year. A civic volunteer, Sanjoy Roy, was found guilty of rape and murder by a Kolkata court in January 2025 and he was sentenced to life imprisonment. However, the doctor's family believes he was not alone in committing the crime. The parents said that they met with Md Salim, the state secretary of the CPI(M). They also visited Bidhan Bhavan to invite Congress state president Subhankar Sarkar, but he was not present at that time. On Saturday, the parents met with BJP state president Shamik Bhattacharya, and later they also met SUCI state secretary Chandidas Bhattacharya. Speaking to The Indian Express, Shamik Bhattacharya said, 'Our workers will be participating to express our solidarity. The state government altered the location of the incident, tampered with evidence, and even facilitated an early cremation. The police, with complete negligence, destroyed all biological evidence. We stand with the family in their time of grief.' The parents of the doctor claim that both the Kolkata police and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), after taking over the case, have failed to deliver justice. 'We are running from one court to another but are not getting justice. If necessary, we will fight to obtain justice ourselves; our struggle will continue,' said the father. The parents believe that the TMC has denied them justice. 'I have not spoken to them, and I will not invite them; they do not even deserve to be acknowledged. It is due to their cover-up that neither I nor my child has got justice,' said the father. Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari of the BJP previously stated that since he would join the protest rally, other political parties may not participate. SUCI state secretary Chandidas Bhattacharya, however, said, 'We sympathise with them. We have full support for the junior doctors' movement, but it is seen that many rallies, even after being called apolitical, turn into a political rally. We will be there at the doctors' rally.' The Nabanna Abhijan is scheduled to start from Dorina crossing at 12 pm on Saturday, but the police have yet to grant permission for the rally. 'We have already mailed the police for permission but till now we have not got any reply. No one can stop us if they think that by not giving permission, we will not have the rally. They are wrong. It will be a peaceful rally,' said the father. TMC state general secretary Kunal Ghosh told reporters, 'While we sympathise with the parents of the RG Kar rape-murder victim, what they are saying is unfortunate. Their actions appear to be prompted and influenced by certain quarters.' Last month, BJP leader Adhikari met with the parents of the victim and urged them to join the Nabanna Abhijan rally against the state government. The rally commemorates one year since the crime that mobilised the public to demand safety for women in public spaces and justice for the victim. Over the past ten months, the victim's parents have actively participated in numerous protests seeking justice for their daughter. After Roy's sentencing, the CBI and the state government appealed to the Calcutta High Court, challenging the order and seeking capital punishment. Recently, Roy, the sole convict in the case, filed a plea in the Calcutta High Court, pleading his innocence. The court is set to hear the matter in September.

Govt. not strengthening Panchayat Raj system, charges BJP chief

The BJP has flayed the Congress government for not taking steps to strengthen the gram panchayat system in Telangana by not disbursing funds on time. In this aspect, it is no different from the previous BRS government, which has destroyed the PR system, maintained party president N. Ramchander Rao on Sunday. Addressing a meeting at Sriramnagar village in Moinabad mandal as part of the ongoing public contact programme taken up by the party, Mr. Rao claimed that development of villages and their welfare is possible only through the BJP once it comes to power to form a double engine government. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has introduced several schemes for the growth and prosperity of the villages, including providing free foodgrains, housing, gas connection, medical insurance, toilets, loans to self-help groups promoted by the womenfolk, supporting entrepreneurship and so on, he said. The works under way in the villages like building of internal roads, farmers contact centres, toilets, streetlights, burial/cremation grounds, plantation activities and others, are being taken up through the funds disbursed by the Central government, claimed the BJP leader. Mr. Rao has pointed out that the Centre has been disbursing ₹6,000 per acre to each farmer irrespective of the land holdings every year per acre under the 'Kisan Samman Nidhi', thereby providing direct financial assistance to them. The party chief instructed the cadre to ensure that the Centre's assistance to gram panchayats on various welfare and development schemes is propagated and taken to the people. The former MLC appealed to the people to support the party candidates in the local body polls for a real change in the fortunes of the villages and the livelihoods of people.s
