Scientists may have found a big, mysterious carbon sink in the South Island

Scientists may have
found a big, mysterious carbon sink
in the South Island.
But they caution more work is needed to solve the puzzle before New Zealand could claim the discovery as a climate win.
NIWA scientists have suggested the reason might be that native forests in the South Island are capturing much more carbon than previously thought, which could pave the way for New Zealand to use pest control and other conservation efforts to boost forest health and help meet the country's climate targets.
The study leader, NIWA atmospheric scientist Beata Bukosa, said researchers first need to resolve the mystery of where tens of millions of tonnes of seemingly disappearing carbon dioxide are going to.
The carbon sink was found over parts of the south west South Island dominated by mature native forests, including Fiordland.
"The next thing we have to do is really identify the exact process responsible for this carbon uptake and figure out where the carbon goes," Bukosa said.
"At the moment, with our methods we can see the signal that the carbon is basically disappearing in that region but we can't identify where exactly that carbon goes and what is happening after it disappears."
The study uses a different technique from the official estimates used in New Zealand's official greenhouse gas inventory.
The official inventory uses a variety of methods, including so-called "ground up" estimates of natural carbon storage based on real measurements of trees growing in our native forests.
For the latest study, scientists from several universities and research institutes analysed carbon dioxide measurements taken between 2011 and 2020 from Wellington's Baring Head and Lauder research station in Central Otago and used modelling to work out how that carbon dioxide was being transported.

They found
much more carbon was disappearing than other methods had suggested -- around 50-140 million tonnes a year more than the previous estimates, or between one and three years' worth of all New Zealand's carbon dioxide emissions from human activities.
Bukosa said they expected to get different results from using different methods, but the differences they found were bigger than could be explained by varying calculation methods.
"You would expect some difference just from the way the methods work...but there was still a stronger [carbon] sink in our estimates," she said.
"Earlier estimates of how much carbon was removed by New Zealand land ecosystems ranged from a net 24 to 118 million tonnes a year.
"Our research found that New Zealand's natural environment absorbed approximately 171 million tonnes of CO2 annually."
As for what was behind the difference, she said the south west South Island location suggested it could be native forests but it could also be something less beneficial to nature and the climate, such as rain or landslides carrying soil - and the carbon it contains - down rivers and away from New Zealand, to be released somewhere else.
"That's the crucial question we are trying to answer at the moment," said Bukosa.
"The region where we found the biggest difference and the strongest sink is around Fiordland and the southwest coast of the South Island and these are also regions where we have quite a bit of erosion, which could lead to frequent landslides which transports carbon.
"The forest might be behaving differently due to climate change, or even regenerating due to pest control. We need to add up all the numbers and see how it is contributing."
If native forests are capturing much more carbon than previously thought, it could pave the way for New Zealand to use pest control and other conservation efforts to help meet its climate targets and boost the health of native species.
Separate studies are tracking the impacts of pest control on boosting carbon storage in native forests in the South island and the East Coast of the North Island.
"Depending what the answer is, that could open up new doors on how to mitigate climate change and potentially reduce our reliance in international carbon credits," Bukosa said.
The research grew from a
2017 pilot study
suggesting native forests in Fiordland and other parts of southwest New Zealand might be sequestering up to 60 per cent more carbon dioxide from the atmosphere than expected.
Bukosa said the latest study extended the period analysed from three to 10 years and improved the atmospheric modelling used.
"The results basically confirmed what we saw in 2017 as well, which is that it seems like there is more carbon dioxide being absorbed across New Zealand relative to what we thought before."
Previous estimates used by the Ministry for the Environment and others to create the country's official greenhouse gas estimates say native forests are overall almost carbon neutral - releasing about as much carbon overall as they absorb.
But those figures are uncertain, with
some forests losing carbon and some forests gaining.
Bukosa said previous studies may have underestimated the amount of carbon taken up by mature indigenous forests.
Dr Andrea Brandon of the Ministry for the Environment was also involved in the study.
She said the findings "indicate there may be additional carbon uptake somewhere in the system that we are currently not tracking. We need to identify what we are missing so that we can further refine our Inventory methods to capture it."
As well as Brandon, the NIWA scientists worked with researchers from GNS Science, Manaaki Whenua, the University of Waikato and overseas as part of a Ministry for Business, Innovation and Employment-funded Endeavour programme called CarbonWatch NZ, which ended last year.

It's the 19th time that Te Tatauranga o ngā Manu Māra o Aotearoa has been held. From now until 6 July people were encouraged to get out in their garden or go to a local park and look at and listen for birds for one hour, on one day, and record the highest number of each species they notice. The survey's co-ordinator, Manaaki Whenua Landcare Research senior researcher Dr Angela Brandt, said the ongoing data collection showed how the trends for each species might be changing over time. But there were short-term declines for kererū both at the national scale and in seven regions, she said. "What we've noticed, especially in our last two reports, was that three species were starting to show these short-term, five-year declines. "That's the kererū, the goldfinch, and the house sparrow. It's not a cause for alarm necessarily, but it's something that we should pay attention to and we want to see whether those trends start to pick up again or if they continue on that kind of declining end of the spectrum." Brandt said the survey not only provided information about birds and the environment generally, but it boosted participants' wellbeing by getting them outdoor and observing and thinking about nature. "We had people saying it was a good opportunity to slow down. Participants talked about feeling curiosity, joy, fun, wonder and a sense of connection." A Tūī (kōkō) interrupted from its feed. "We're asking people to count all the birds they see, so we get a lot of information on the common species [as well as rare and threatened species] and can then see if they're potentially starting to decline. "But also we're also getting information from urban and rural areas where people are, so that covers some different parts of New Zealand to the monitoring efforts going on by our science organisations and experts." For some species there was a lot of variation among regions, she added. "The fantail is a great example of a species that's quite consistent [everywhere] as we're generally seeing increases over the last several years." In contrast the korimako (bellbird) was "quite variable," she said. "Canterbury and Nelson for example, we've had pretty consistent increasing trends for bell birds over the last several years. "But then we actually have some strong decreases in the counts that we've seen in some of our North Island regions such as Gisborne, Hawke's Bay and Manawatu." It underscored why survey participation was invaluable, Brandt said. "What's really helpful for us to actually pick up those differences is to get enough people participating in each region, [to] give us that full picture." Air pollution uneven across town: research

Research shows air quality is not consistent across Gore — instead air pollution gathers in two specific areas of the town. A study from Niwa indicated during winter last year, Environment Southland contributed funding to place 28 clarity monitors that measure PM2.5 levels to assess the variation in air quality across Gore. PM2.5 and PM10 are types of particulate matter small enough to be inhaled and reach deep into the lungs and are used as indicators of air quality. Environment Southland said in a statement the monitors were deployed in a uniform grid across the urban area of the town and measured the PM2.5 levels daily between April 22 and June 25. Environment Southland team leader air and terrestrial science Dr Nick Talbot said the council funded the project because it had the responsibility to monitor air quality in its airsheds. "Part of that responsibility is determining whether the permanent air monitoring station is in the right place. "Gore has only had two exceedances of the National Standards for Air Quality in four years, both of which were last year. "While that looks great on the surface, we wanted to ensure that it was an accurate reflection of what the air quality was for the town. "We need to make sure the monitoring station is located in the right area to measure correctly." The work revealed one large area in the southwest of the town and another smaller area in East Gore experienced higher levels of air pollution in winter. "Plumes of smoke are found not to move as freely in Gore as in Invercargill. Instead, they pool in specific locations due to hilly topography and airflow. "This work clearly shows that the monitoring site adopted by council is on the fringe of the correct location to accurately represent the concentrations of pollution in the worst affected areas of Gore." The amount of air pollution in those areas compared with the rest of the grid clearly indicated the number of homes using fireplaces was the cause, Dr Talbot said. As a result, a temporary testing site has been placed in West Gore for two years to measure the air quality throughout winter. "Our message for those at home this winter is that home heating is one area where people can make the biggest difference to our air quality. "Not only does burning wet wood create a large amount of smoke, it gives off much less warmth than dry wood." Environment Southland operates a Good Wood approved suppliers' scheme, in which firewood retailers voluntarily agree to supply wood at the recommended moisture level of less than 25%. — APL

New van lab for measuring carbon dioxide levels praised by scientists

Photo: Supplied/GNS Science Climate scientists are hailing a new lab in a van as a big step forward in finding out how much carbon dioxide New Zealand cities release and how much is absorbed by green spaces. A CarbonWatch-Urban research programme, led by GNS Science, is mapping CO2 sources and sinks in every town and city. The van will access varying climates, geographies and population sizes, and will visit multiple times to account for changes in season. Spokesperson Jocelyn Turnbull said up until now, only a handful of cities around the world - including Auckland - had the technology to measure emissions, and the mobile lab with its state of the art instruments is a world first. "Getting accurate information into the hands of decision-makers is essential for emissions reduction," Turnbull said. She said the work was critical in deciding how best to reduce emissions. "Squeezing all of this high-tech equipment inside the van, and providing a rechargeable electric power supply, has required a fair bit of Kiwi ingenuity from our team and GNS's engineering workshop."
