Overage Vehicle Fuel Ban To Be Enforced From November 1 In Delhi-NCR
Days after the Delhi government lifted the ban on diesel vehicles older than 10 years and petrol vehicles older than 15 years, the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) said that fuel supply to these vehicles will be prohibited starting November 1 this year. The CAQM amended its earlier Direction No. 89, postponing the implementation of the 'No Fuel" policy. The revised order will now be enforced not just in Delhi but also across five key National Capital Region (NCR) areas- Gurugram, Faridabad, Ghaziabad, Gautam Buddh Nagar and Sonipat.
Delhi's Fuel Ban Policy
The Delhi government launched a major anti-pollution campaign on July 1 targeting so-called 'end-of-life vehicles". Under the original plan, petrol pumps were instructed not to dispense fuel to diesel vehicles older than 10 years and petrol vehicles older than 15 years. The campaign relied on automated camera systems at fuelling stations to detect vehicle age and traffic police were given powers to impound or issue challans to violators. The initiative was spearheaded by the CAQM as part of broader efforts to control worsening air quality in the capital region.
However, the move triggered strong backlash from vehicle owners following which Delhi Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa announced the lifting of the ban and hinted that the government would work on a more balanced system to manage older vehicles.
Earlier, Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena formally intervened by writing to Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, urging the government to put the ban on hold. In his letter, VK Saxena expressed concern over the policy's impact on common people, writing, 'It would be unfair to impound their cars and scrap them even if they have run just a few thousand kilometres."
While the immediate enforcement has been deferred, officials confirmed that the policy will be implemented from November 1, with Delhi and NCR as the key enforcement zones. Senior CAQM officials maintained that the policy is crucial to curbing vehicular emissions in Delhi but agreed to delay its implementation after discussions with the Environment Secretary and following VK Saxena's letter.
The government is now expected to engage in further consultations to develop a more phased and citizen-friendly enforcement strategy even as preparations continue for full-scale rollout later this year, sources said.

Six people are still missing, authorities said, as search and rescue efforts began on Day 2. The incident occurred on Wednesday when a portion of Gambhira Bridge, which is built over the Mahisagar River and connects Vadodara and Anand, collapsed, plunging vehicles into the river. On Thursday, a team of senior officials from the roads and buildings department also arrived at the spot to carry out a high-level investigation into the incident. Taking to X, Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel had said he had ordered an investigation into the tragedy. 'I have directed the roads and buildings department to conduct an immediate investigation into this accident. …I have instructed a team comprising the Chief Engineer–Design, Chief Engineer–South Gujarat, and two private engineers specialising in bridge construction to urgently reach the site, investigate the reasons for the bridge collapse, and submit a preliminary report on technical aspects." Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed grief over the deaths and announced an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh for next of kin of each deceased. He also prayed for speedy recovery of the injured. Gujarat minister Rushikesh Patel, meanwhile, said the bridge collapsed despite timely maintenance and repairs. 'This bridge was built in 1985. Regular maintenance and repair of this bridge were done, but this unfortunate incident has happened…," Patel said. The Gambhira Bridge served as a key link between central Gujarat and Saurashtra, supporting freight movement, agriculture transport and medical and daily commutes. News18 had reported that apart from saving 30–45 minutes of travel time, the bridge enabled farmers from Padra and Mujpur to reach urban markets, helped ambulances reach Vadodara hospitals on time, and supported trade corridors by linking NH-64 and local roads. view comments First Published: July 10, 2025, 09:17 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. US President Donald Trump Announces 50% Tariff on Copper Effective August 1
US President Donald Trump announced on Wednesday a new 50% tariff on copper to start on August 1 US President Donald Trump announced on Wednesday a new 50% tariff on copper to start on August 1 in a bid to promote domestic development of an industry critical to defense, electronics and automobiles. The move marks the latest in a string of sectoral tariffs Trump has placed on industries such as steel and aluminum that economists warn will drive up costs for American consumers. Trump signaled on Tuesday that he was imposing fresh tariffs on copper, sending U.S. Comex copper futures to record highs. The White House ordered a Section 232 investigation into copper imports in February, using a law that gives the president authority to impose higher tariffs based on national security grounds. Trump said on Wednesday that he received a 'robust" national security assessment that concluded tariffs were necessary to protect U.S. production of a commodity that is critical across an array of industries. 'Copper is necessary for Semiconductors, Aircraft, Ships, Ammunition, Data Centers, Lithium-ion Batteries, Radar Systems, Missile Defense Systems, and even, Hypersonic Weapons, of which we are building many," Trump said in a post on Truth Social. The U.S. depends on imports for nearly half of its refined copper needs, and brought in 810,000 metric tons in 2024, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. Countries set to be most affected by the tariff are Chile, Canada and Mexico, which were the top suppliers to the U.S. of refined copper, copper alloys and copper products in 2024, according to U.S. Census Bureau data. Chile, Canada and Peru have told the administration that imports from their countries do not threaten U.S. interests and should not face tariffs. All three have free trade deals with the U.S. The steep tariff is designed to encourage production in the U.S. More than two-thirds of the country's copper is mined in Arizona, where the development of a massive new mine planned by Rio Tinto and BHP has been stalled for more than a decade. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. 6-Year-Old Girl Married Off To 45-Year-Old Afghan Man. Taliban Say ‘Let Her Turn 9 First'
A 45-year-old man married a six-year-old girl in Helmand, Afghanistan. A 45-year-old man married a six-year-old girl in Afghanistan's Helmand province following which images of the child bride circulated on social media, drawing condemnation. As per reports, Taliban stopped the man from taking the girl home saying that she could instead be sent to her husband at age nine. The child's father and the groom were arrested in the Marjah district, where the marriage ceremony took place but no charges have been filed. The groom, reportedly already married to two women, is said to have paid the girl's family in exchange for her. The girl remains with her parents for now, as per reports. According to Hasht-e Subh Daily, the transaction was conducted through the widespread practice of walwar — a bride price based on the girl's physical appearance, education level and perceived value. Child Marriage In Afghanistan Since the Taliban's return to power in 2021, child marriage- already endemic in Afghanistan- has sharply risen. UN Women reported a 25% surge in child marriages and a 45% increase in childbearing among girls following the Taliban's bans on female education and employment. UNICEF ranks Afghanistan among the top countries for child brides globally. There is currently no legal minimum age for marriage under Taliban rule. The previous civil code, which set the minimum age for girls at 16, has not been reinstated. Instead, marriages are governed by interpretations of Islamic law. Under the Hanafi school, a girl may be married once she reaches puberty but there is no consensus on when that begins. Meanwhile, the crackdown on women and girls continues in Afghanistan where girls have been banned from secondary schools and universities. Women are barred from most jobs, public parks, gyms and even bathhouses. A male guardian is required for travel and all women must cover their faces in public. view comments First Published: July 09, 2025, 22:59 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
