Steven Pressley's Dundee see Premier Sports Cup hopes dashed by Alloa loss
Dundee were on the end of another 1-0 defeat at the Indodrill Stadium after losing their opening game against Airdrie.
The decisive moment came midway through the second half when Luke Graham could only turn Steven Buchanan's shot into his own net as he tried to clear in the goalmouth.
The result moved Alloa on to nine points at the top of Group C, three ahead of Airdrie with a game more played.
Mikael Mandron hit a hat-trick as St Mirren started and finished strongly in an 8-2 home win over Annan.
Mandron put Saints three up inside nine minutes following Killian Phillips' double but trialist Myles Gaffney pulled two goals back for the visitors before Richard King converted a penalty on the hour mark.
Stephen Robinson's side went goal crazy in the final 10 minutes with Mandron completing his treble and Jayden Richardson and Roland Idowu also on target.
Ayr are a point behind Saints with a game in hand in Group D after Curtis Main hit a double in a 4-0 home win over Arbroath.
Falkirk could not follow up their seven-goal thrashing of Brechin as they were held to a goalless draw by Cove in another trip to the North East. The Bairns gained a penalty shoot-out bonus point but Spartans moved top of Group A with a 2-0 win at Glebe Park.
Stephen O'Donnell hit the only goal as Motherwell moved top of Group G with victory over Stenhousemuir at Ochilview.
O'Donnell had earlier had a goal disallowed and Callum Slattery hit the bar from a free-kick before the defender converted from a back-post corner four minutes before the break.
Livingston bounced back from defeat by Kilmarnock with a 2-0 home win over Brora Rangers. Danny Wilson opened the scoring with an overhead kick just after the half-hour mark and Zak Rudden headed the second with six minutes left.
Ross County cut the gap on Group B leaders Partick Thistle to two points after Jay Henderson's second-half winner in a 1-0 victory over Queen of the South at Palmerston.
East Kilbride moved top of Group F as they followed up their shock triumph over Raith Rovers with a 4-1 win at Elgin with the help of Jack Leitch's first-half double.
St Johnstone joined the SPFL newcomers on six points after Uche Ikpeazu's 90th-minute goal – his first for the club – earned a 1-0 win at Inverness.

Kettlewell demands Killie to be more 'threatening' in final third
Kilmarnock must be more "threatening" in front of goal against East Fife if they are to progress in the Premier Sports Cup insists Stuart recorded their third clean sheet of the group stage in their goalless draw with Kelty Hearts, but are now just one point ahead of both the Fifers and Livingston in Group H before Saturday's deciding side will progress if they win at home against the League 1 outfit, but he knows they will need to improve their attacking play against Dick Campbell's side."We have to be more threatening and we have to be able to go and express ourselves a wee bit more with some more composure to make sure we capitalise on opportunities," he told Killie TV."If we think it's going to be any different – people not throwing their body on the line and defending their penalty box like Kelty Hearts did – then we are seriously mistaken."It will be a difficult enough game for us and we will have to play with some real tempo to be able play through them and carve out opportunities."What we will do between now and then is understand why we didn't execute it better and why we didn't finish."Sometimes that's the last thing to come in pre-season so I don't become ultra negative, but the demands are there that we become more threatening in front of goal."

City reeling from County's eight goal blitz
Edinburgh City travelled to Dingwall to meet Ross County, a side recently relegated from the William Hill Premiership, and it was a night Citizens fans may wish to forget. Don Cowie's men thrashed the men from Meadowbank Stadium 8-0 in the Premier Sports Cup, Group B, on Matchday four of five, three goals coming in the first-half and five in the second. This left City boss Michael McIndoe with much to ponder on the long trip back to the Capital from the Highlands. Northern Ireland international striker Ronan Hale completed his hat-trick with a penalty after 47 minutes after opening the scoring in 22 minutes. Jay Henderson added No 2 in 37 minutes and Hale was back on the scoresheet two minutes later. He claimed his third from the penalty spot two minutes into the second half with Henderson netting his second after 57 minutes. Joe Coyle scored a double after 76 and 89 minutes, his second completing the scoring, and Kieran Phillips also netted after 82 minutes. Edinburgh City bosses thanked the 12 fans who travelled to support their team in the fixture and the dominant display from the second tier club who are close to sealing their spot in the next round. Cowie was understandably pleased with the performance of his men and said: 'We had to be patient for the first goal and a real moment of quality from Ronan breaks the deadlock. 'You could see the freedom which came after that. 'I spoke at half-time when it was 3-0, could we kick on from there and be ruthless and we got the two goals right after half-time. Overall 8-0, two debuts for Academy graduates, so delighted.' On a positive note, City gave two Academy graduates their first professional appearance and, overall, Ross County had 23 shots against ten in reply, 12 on target against two from the opposition, and enjoyed 54 per cent of possession against 46 per cent Partick Thistle still top the section with nine points from three games, followed by County on seven points also from three starts. Third are Queen of the South with three points from the same number of games, Stranraer are fourth on four points from three starts and City prop up the rest with two points from four games. "We need to win the game to guarantee qualification and if we get to 11 points, who knows? We might creep into a seeded position going into the draw."However, first and foremost we have to take care of Spartans. They are well-coached, Dougie Samuel, everyone there, a very experienced team. They will prepare to make it very difficult for us."We have got to play at a tempo that hopefully they can't handle."
