Kraken, RW Kaapo Kakko agree to three-year deal

Reuters5 days ago
July 23 - The Seattle Kraken liked what they saw in the 49 games that right winger Kaapo Kakko played for them last season.
On Tuesday, the franchise and the 24-year-old Finnish forward agreed to a three-year contract featuring an average annual value of $4,525,000. The team will avoid arbitration with the restricted free agent.
Kakko, the No. 2 overall pick by the Rangers in the 2019 draft, was dealt by New York to Seattle on Dec. 18 for defenseman Will Borgen and a pair of 2025 draft picks.
He made an immediate impact, scoring 10 goals and adding 20 assists in 49 games. Kakko averaged a career-best 17:03 of ice time per game with Seattle. Combined between the Rangers and Kraken, he totaled 44 points (14 goals, 30 assists), also a career best for the six-year veteran.
"Getting a contract done with Kaapo was a top priority this summer," Seattle general manager Jason Botterill said in a statement. "We knew quickly he'd be a big part of our team moving forward. He's got size, skill and tremendous playmaking ability, and isn't afraid of going to the net. He fit in immediately with our group, and we're thrilled to have him under contract."
Kakko has played in 379 NHL games, amassing 71 goals and 90 assists. He was used more extensively on the power play for Seattle and responded with three goals on that unit after tallying seven in five-plus years for New York.

Reports: Royals keeping RHP Seth Lugo with 2-year, $46M extension

July 28 - Kansas City right-hander Seth Lugo, once thought to be a prime trade candidate before Thursday's deadline, will stay with the Royals after agreeing to a two-year, $46 million contract extension, according to multiple reports on Sunday night. Lugo will earn $20 million annually plus a $3 million signing bonus, per the reports. The deal also includes a performance-based vesting option for a third season in 2028 for $20 million or a $17 million club option with a $3 million buyout, according to the reports. The 35-year-old currently has a $15 million player option for 2026 following the two-year, $30 million contract he signed for 2024-25, but he was expected to decline it and become a free agent. Instead, both he and the club appear to want to keep him in Kansas City. The Royals have not made an announcement as of Sunday night. The team enters Monday with a 52-54 record for third place in the American League Central and four games behind Seattle and Texas (each 56-50), who are tied for the third AL wild-card berth. Kansas City already added to the roster by trading for veteran Arizona outfielder Randal Grichuk on Saturday in exchange for rookie reliever Andrew Hoffmann. Lugo is 7-5 with a 2.95 ERA, 33 walks and 99 strikeouts in 113 innings over 19 starts this season. He was a 2024 All-Star in his first campaign after signing as a free agent with the Royals and finished second in the American League Cy Young Award voting. Lugo went 16-9 with a 3.00 ERA, 48 walks and 181 strikeouts in 206 2/3 innings over a major league-high 33 starts. His career record is 63-45 with 16 saves, a 3.33 ERA, 254 walks and 928 strikeouts in 960 2/3 innings over 353 games (116 starts) for the New York Mets (2016-22), San Diego Padres (2023) and Royals (2024-present). The New York Mets selected Lugo in the 34th round of the 2011 MLB Draft out of Centenary College of Louisiana. --Field Level Media

A's look for youth movement to continue paying off vs. Mariners

July 28 - Jacob Wilson of the Athletics was the leading candidate for American League Rookie of the Year for most of this season. But teammate Nick Kurtz is in the process of taking over the pole position. The two rookies have created optimism for the club's future and the Athletics are enjoying a hot streak as they open a three-game series against the Seattle Mariners at West Sacramento, Calif. The Athletics are looking for a season-best fifth straight win after annihilating the Houston Astros in a four-game road sweep. The A's outscored Houston 32-7 for their first four-game sweep during manager Mark Kotsay's 3 1/2 seasons at the helm. "That was huge for us to win four games over the top seed in our division," Athletics outfielder Lawrence Butler said after Sunday's 7-1 win. "It says what kind of team we are. We're always grinding. ... We're going to go into Sacramento with some momentum." Kurtz was the prime force for the Athletics despite sitting out Sunday due to a tired lower body. He went 11-for-15 in the series with nine RBIs. The 22-year-old etched his name into baseball lore with one of the top individual outings in history. Kurtz went 6-for-6 with four homers, eight RBIs, six runs and a whopping 19 total bases in Friday's 15-3 romp over Houston. Kurtz has played in 67 games for the A's after opening the season with 20 appearances for Triple-A Las Vegas. He also made one rehab appearance at Class A Stockton for a total of 88 games. He has never played that many games in a season at any level. "I'm learning as I go," Kurtz said. "I'm trying to figure out what I need to do in the training room and weight room to prepare myself each and every day. I'm learning from the guys who have been there and done that." Selected fourth overall in the 2024 draft after hitting 61 homers in 164 college games at Wake Forest, Kurtz has displayed impressive raw power this season. He is batting .309 with 23 homers, 59 RBIs and a .683 slugging percentage. At the same time, Wilson is in a 4-for-38 rut to see his average drop to .312. The starting shortstop in the All-Star Game for the American League missed three games of the Houston series with a lingering left hand injury and he may sit again Monday. Seattle, of course, has its own player doing big things in All-Star catcher Cal Raleigh. Raleigh hit homers in each of the last two games of a four-game set in Anaheim against the Los Angeles Angels. He leads the majors with 41 and is the first catcher and first switch-hitter in MLB history to reach 40 homers before the end of July. The Mariners, who lost 4-1 on Sunday, are tied for second in the AL West with the Texas Rangers and the same clubs are knotted for the third and final wild-card spot. It will be no surprise if Seattle makes a move or two prior to Thursday's trade deadline. "We do have some other areas we'd like to address -- and not the least of which is, like every other team in the postseason hunt, we'd like to add to that bullpen," Mariners general manager Jerry Dipoto said on Sirius radio Sunday. Right-hander Luis Castillo (7-6, 3.30 ERA) starts for Seattle against left-hander JP Sears (7-8, 4.98) of the Athletics. Castillo, 32, lost to the A's on March 28 when he gave up two runs and three hits over five innings. He is 3-3 with a 3.28 ERA in 46 2/3 innings over eight career starts against the Athletics. Sears, 29, lost to Seattle on March 30 when he allowed two runs and five hits over 6 2/3 innings. He is 2-4 with a 2.67 ERA in 57 1/3 innings over 10 appearances (nine starts) against the Mariners. Raleigh is 2-for-12 with a homer off Sears. --Field Level Media

Lionel Messi looks embarrassed as he and wife Antonela are shown on Coldplay kiss cam at Miami concert

LIONEL MESSI was caught in a rare moment of awkwardness with his stunning wife Antonela Roccuzzo at a Coldplay concert. The loved-up couple were enjoying the British rock-band's final U.S show in Miami when the dreaded kiss cam landed squarely on them. 6 6 It comes days after the kiss scam scandal involving married Astronomer CEO Andy Byron and HR head Kristin Cabot. Their ducking reaction to being filmed at Boston's gig has caught the world's attention - with millions now talking about an alleged affair. And while many might seize the opportunity for a public smooch, Messi seemed to go bright red given the circumstances. Footage circulating on social media showed the Inter Miami star smiling sheepishly, while Antonela, ever graceful, beamed beside him. With everyone in the crowd cheering "Messi", the couple waved to fans before Coldplay's lead singer Chris Martin serenaded them. Martin, who had jokingly called out Byron and Caobt's potential 'affair' during his performance last week, thanked Messi for coming and called him "the No1 sports person of all-time". And it didn't take long for fans online to see the funny side. One wrote: "They should have tried to hide for a second. That would be hilarious." Join SUN CLUB for the Man Utd Files every Thursday plus in-depth coverage and exclusives from Old Trafford While another said: "They were just singing and not dodging any Cam scandals." A third said: 'Jumbotron with Lionel Messi! (He didn't hide, though).' Moment Chris Martin laughs as he issues kiss cam warning days after CEO and HR chief caught 6 6 Although not spotted in the viral clip, Antonela later posted snaps of the couple's three sons enjoying the show at the Hard Rock Stadium. Thiago, 12, was pictured wearing a Coldplay cap, while Mateo, nine, wore a snazzy pair of 3D glasses as Ciro, six, cuddled into his dad. Meanwhile, Messi was serving a one-match suspension for Inter Miami's game against FC Cincinnati on Saturday. The eight-time Ballon d'Or winner and fellow Barcelona legend Jordi Alba were punished for skipping Major League Soccer's All-Star game earlier this week. Both players missed Wednesday's match in Austin, Texas where the MLS squad posted a 3-1 win against Mexico's Liga MX All-Stars. Elsewhere, Humiliated Byron and Cabot quit their jobs at the tech company as a result of the scandal. And Martin's ex-wife Gwyneth Paltrow was hired by Astronomer for a tongue-in-cheek video, in what fans are describing as a genius PR move. 6
