July 12 (UPI) -- Former presidential adviser and political commentator David Gergen died at age 83 from complications caused by Lewy body dementia on Thursday.
His son, Christopher Gergen, confirmed his father died Thursday at his residence in a retirement home in Lexington, Mass., The New York Times reported.
Gergen was a speechwriter and communications strategist for Presidents Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford, Ronald Reagan and Bill Clinton.
While working with Reagan during his 1980 presidential campaign versus former President Jimmy Carter, Gergen suggested Reagan ask voters the rhetorical question: "Are you better off than you were four years ago?"
"Rhetorical questions have great power," Gergen said years later, as reported by The New York Times.
"It's one of those things that you sometimes strike gold," Gergen continued. "When you're out there panhandling in the river, occasionally, you get a gold nugget."
He also was a political analyst for CNN and the founding director of the Center for Public Leadership at the Harvard Kennedy School.
Gergen was a "political scholar who served four presidents of both parties, an adoring father and dedicated husband, a senior statesman in every sense of the word, and a tireless educator," a CNN spokesperson said.
"But above all else, David was a relentlessly kind and warm person," the unnamed spokesperson said. "Our staff, contributors and audiences are better informed because of his towering influence."
Gergen's cause of death, Lewy body dementia, is the second most common type of Alzheimer's disease and is caused when protein deposits called Lewy bodies form within nerve cells in the brain, according to the Mayo Clinic.
The protein deposits interfere with thinking, memory and movement and can cause dementia or Parkinson's disease dementia.

The blue color, which comes from the white flowering evergreen, can be used for sports drinks, flavored or enhanced non-carbonated water, fruit drinks, ready-to-drink teas plus hard and soft candy, the FDA said in a news release. The health agency also announced a letter was sent to manufacturers encouraging them to phase out Red No. 3 in foods sooner than Jan. 15, 2027, which is the required deadline announced in April by Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. The dye has been linked to cancer in rats at high amounts. At that time, Kennedy announced measures to work with the industry to phase out petroleum-based synthetic dyes in food. They have committed to ending 40% of the additives. "Every day, children are exposed to synthetic chemicals in food that serve no purpose," Kennedy said in a news release. "The FDA's approval of gardenia blue shows we're finally putting kids first. Thanks to Dr. Marty Makary's bold leadership, we're cutting through industry influence and taking decisive action to make American Healthy Again." Makary, the FDA commissioner, said: "Now, by extracting the palette of available colors derived from natural sources, food manufacturers have a variety of options available that will make it easier to end their use of petroleum-based dyes." The coloring is made by refining the compound genipin. It is derived from crushed gardenia jasminoides Ellis fruit, which often is used in traditional Chinese medicine. Soy, which is a potential allergen, is used to make gardenia blue, but the group said it is detected in the additive and won't cause allergic reactions. Gardenia Blue Interest Group asked to exempt it from labeling. The FDA on July 9 said it is reviewing the request. In May, three other colors were approved: galdieria extract blue, white calcium phosphate and butterfly pea flower extract in blue, purple and green. Color additives must be approved by the FDA before they may be used in foods. On Friday, Consumer Brands announced a voluntary commitment to encourage makers of consumer packaged goods and beverage products to remove certified Food, Drug and Cosmetic colors from products served in schools nationwide by the start of the 2026-2027 school year. The International Association of Color Manufacturers said in a news release that artificial dyes are "essential for consistency, visual appeal and consumer trust in food products." Several major food companies are removing synthetic food colorings from their products, including Kraft Heinz and General Mills by the end of 2027. But Mars, which makes M&M's and Skittles, said it will continue using the synthetic dyes in its candies, reversing a pledge the company made in 2016 to remove artificial colors from all foods and snacks. The company told The New York Times that its products are "safe to enjoy and meet the high standards and applicable regulations set by food safety authorities around the world." A spokesman for the National Confectionery Association, Christopher Gindlesperger, told the New York Post: "People can freely use cannabis, THC products, alcohol and cigarettes but vibrantly colored candy is an issue? Ge me a break."

The Stanford research study on the use of large langue model chatbots will publicly be presented later this month at the eighth annual ACM Conference on Fairness, Accountability and Transparency from June 23-26 in Athens, Greece, in a study titled: "Expressing stigma and inappropriate responses prevents LLMs from safely replacing mental health providers." The study looked at five AI-powered chatbots targeted toward mental health support by analyzing their replies against established criteria on what constitutes a quality human therapist. The study's senior author said that, while chatbots are now being utilized more often as "companions, confidants and therapists," the possibility exits their responses could further stigmatize users or they might inappropriately respond in high-risk scenarios. Still, their potential can't be overlooked, some say. "LLMs potentially have a really powerful future in therapy," according to Nick Huber, an assistant professor at Stanford University's Graduate School of Education. Two critical experiments were conducted by school researchers. In the first, chatbots were presented with fictional outlines of people afflicted with various mental ailments and were issued inquiries as a way to measure any stigma-like natures or responses. It showed examples of chatbots expressing a greater stigma in disorders such as alcohol addiction and schizophrenia versus more relatively common conditions, such as depression. But ever newer or advanced LLMs displayed a similar level in bias, which suggested that LLM size and newer advances did little to cut back on stigma, noted lead author Jared Moore. Researchers tested in the second experiment how a chatbot responded to real excerpts of therapy transcripts that included sensitive feedback on issues like delusional or suicidal thinking. However, chatbots failed in some cases to flag or counter dangerous thinking. "The default response from AI is often that these problems will go away with more data, but what we're saying is that business as usual is not good enough," Moore said. For example, a user hinting at suicide asked an AI chatbot for a list of bridges after losing a job. A few bots, such as Noni by 7cups and therapist by failed to pick up the critical context and simply listed the bridges. Experts indicated that chatbots -- while skilled in support roles such as administrative, training, journaling and non-clinical patient functions -- may not be fully ready or prepared to sit as a replacement human therapist. "We need to think critically about precisely what this role should be," added Haber.

Sugar, aspartame (Equal), sucralose (Splenda) and glycyrrhizin (licorice root) are all significantly associated with a higher risk of early puberty, particularly in genetically predisposed children, researchers reported Sunday at the Endocrine Society's annual meeting in San Francisco. Further, the more of these sweeteners that children consumed, the greater their risk of early puberty, researchers found. "This study is one of the first to connect modern dietary habits - specifically sweetener intake - with both genetic factors and early puberty development in a large, real-world cohort," researcher Dr. Yang-Ching Chen, a professor of family medicine at Taipei Municipal Wan Fang Hospital and Taipei Medical University in Taiwan, said in a news release. In previous research, Chen had found that certain sweeteners can directly influence hormones and gut bacteria linked to early puberty. For example, the artificial sweetener acesulfame potassium (Ace-K) triggers the release of puberty-related hormones, and glycyrrhizin changes the balance of gut bacteria and influences genes involved in puberty, Chen's earlier work showed. "This suggests that what children eat and drink, especially products with sweeteners, may have a surprising and powerful impact on their development," Chen said. For the new study, researchers analyzed data on more than 1,400 teens in Taiwan, of whom 481 experienced a form of early puberty called central precocious puberty. Puberty usually starts between 8 and 13 for girls and 9 to 14 in boys, according to the Cleveland Clinic. Central precocious puberty occurs when a child's brain releases gonadotropin-releasing hormone too early, causing the testes or ovaries to start generating sex hormones, the Cleveland Clinic says. Children with precocious puberty may grow quickly at first, but stop earlier than usual, causing them to be shorter-than-average adults. Long-term they may be at higher risk of heart disease, certain cancers and type 2 diabetes. Researchers used questionnaires and urine samples to assess teens' sweetener intake, and tested their genetic predisposition using a panel of 19 genes related to central precocious puberty. Not only were certain sweeteners linked to early puberty, but boys and girls responded to different types of sweeteners, researchers found. Sucralose increase early puberty risk in boys, while glycyrrhizin, sucralose and added sugars increased risk in girls, results show. The results highlight "gender differences in how sweeteners affect boys and girls, adding an important layer to our understanding of individualized health risks," Chen said. "The findings are directly relevant to families, pediatricians and public health authorities," Chen said. "They suggest that screening for genetic risk and moderating sweetener intake could help prevent early puberty and its long-term health consequences. This could lead to new dietary guidelines or risk assessment tools for children, supporting healthier development." Because this was an observational study, it could not draw a direct cause-and-effect link between sweeteners and early puberty.
